      @JohnRochaSays while that may be true, when Billy Eichner makes a movie about LGBT+ guys (Bros) then calls everyone who didn't go see the movie "the problem", that's what Jeff is saying in his argument. Before when a movie failed, people didn't call out the audience for not seeing their movie because they were any kind of "phobe" or "ist". Maybe they would say people had no taste or heaven forbid, take accountability for not reaching the audience they thought they were going to. But because these people who (deservedly so) get these opportunities to tell stories they want to represent, they can't complain that people didn't see it because the audience is intolerant. The same for people like Elizabeth Banks, she crapped on dudes before her Charlie's Angels movie and said "don't see the movie" but when it bombed at the box office, she complained that men didn't see it and were "$3xist"...when the problems in these movies are quality based and maybe the people involves weren't ready for the opportunities they were handed.

    You guys wildly overestimate how much star power matters for people when it comes to the decision of which movies to watch. I’d say we could probably count on one hand the number of stars that actually puts butts in seats these days. And even they aren’t guarantees anymore. Bullet train or Killers of the flower moon didn’t exactly blow up the box office even with Leo and Brad on the cast.
    I really don’t think Javier as Galactus would move the needle for many people.

    • @thedefinitionisthis
      @thedefinitionisthis Před měsícem +2

      Considering the complaint has been that Pedro Pascal has been overexposed, possibly too famous to be in this movie, now the complaint is Galactus isn't played by someone famous enough? For these particular characters, people are wanting to see the Fantastic Four; not the actors/actresses. John made the rebuttal "No one went to see The Marvels"... But there's nuance to that. That's because of the MCU's current track record (at least movie-wise), and the fact it's coming off a Captain Marvel that, while making big bucks, wasn't really all that well-received by fans. Not to mention the fact that Shang Chi is a virtually unknown character as well, and Simu Liu had only been on a small Canadian sitcom; and yet people/fans went to go check out "Shang Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings." I definitely think the level of fame/celebrity is overestimated when it comes to these movies.

    Idk man, I really disagree with your take that not casting A-listers only is taking away the magic from Marvel movies. They started out with casting more smaller actors and it went really well. I don't need to see every star in Hollywood become a superhero. Like Ryan Gosling, I gotta be honest, I don't need him in the MCU. Cast a smaller, upcoming actor who can become someone through this role like Hemsworth did for example instead of someone like Gosling were it's just ",Oh look, it's Gosling as XYZ". Idk, just my 2 cents.

      Another thing too is that Coogler is an extremely personal director. You look at all of his films thus far, even the MCU entries, and you can tell he's not just cash-grabbing or doing a job; they're all movies with some level of messaging and catharsis for him. I don't think he's "trapped" by the bubble of Marvel necessarily. But he's also someone that has a pretty small filmography for someone who's reached his level of fame and praise. Can't the man do both? Lol

    I respectfully disagree with John on the assertion that Marvel needs to cast “top of the line” actors. The Pedro Pascal casting makes me LESS interested in seeing Fantastic Four, because I’m tired of seeing the guy. However, the Galactus casting has renewed my interest, because it seems outside of the box. I’m interested to see what that actor can do, since I’ve never seen him before. Sure, that’s just my perspective, but I believe there are other longtime fans who may feel the same. I’m tired of the cookie cutter Marvel stuff. The moment they started hiring actors who are too recognizable is the moment they really fell off for me. Great job keeping your cool with Jeff today John.
    I get where Jeff is coming from because most people who haven’t done the (admittedly enormous) work draw the same conclusions that he does.
    To Jeff I’d say you’d be a lot less angry and way more understanding if you dive into the mountains of literature on this subject. The people to be mad at are those that got us here by discriminating so hard that the pendulum has to swing hard the other way before reaching equilibrium, not those who are trying to make it better, however correct or incorrect their attempts are, at least they are trying. The people in power have been speaking to equality since the 60s. Marginalized people are simply done waiting for those meager efforts to kick in and are left with the only option they have which is to create their own avenues.
    When the system fails you you have to make your own system. If someone doesn’t like that system, I ask, what did you do to make the old system work for everyone, and how did that work out?
    Again, much love ☮️
