I really appreciate Jeff more by each episode
You know who else kept statistics?! 😂 Jeff is treasure
Yes! Yes! Yes! I hope this is an episode where Jeff yells at people in the live chat. One episode of this show, a week, isn’t enough.
I’m with Jeff, I want to see Ryan Coogler make an original movie. He’s paid his dues making money for Disney, let him cook.
Agreed, He should be doing the nolan route post dark knight rises. I dont want Coogler to miss making great orginal movies or a chance at an oscar if gets tired down doing more mcu movies. With marvel studios current reputation of not giving creatives enough control , he might feel he wants to do work else where were he gets more freedom.
I agree, I want to see him do more original projects, although let's remember that he is already doing one about vampires, but let's not confuse things, nobody is forcing him to do movies for marvel, he wants to do them.
He can do both, Nolan wasn’t told only do Batman movies. Got to spread his wings while doing Batman.
Enjoyed the spirited discussion! Good points on both sides. Ultimately I feel the more diverse voices we have the richer our entertainment and culture will become, and the greater potential for empathy (for those open to it).
I agree with Jeff. It is ridiculous that Sundance is asking people what their sexuality is?
Great debate about Hollywood representation
Love the verbal sparring!
😂
Every Wes Anderson movie is a white identity movie.
Truth. And I still enjoy most of them, but I know exactly what they are.
@JohnRochaSays while that may be true, when Billy Eichner makes a movie about LGBT+ guys (Bros) then calls everyone who didn't go see the movie "the problem", that's what Jeff is saying in his argument. Before when a movie failed, people didn't call out the audience for not seeing their movie because they were any kind of "phobe" or "ist". Maybe they would say people had no taste or heaven forbid, take accountability for not reaching the audience they thought they were going to. But because these people who (deservedly so) get these opportunities to tell stories they want to represent, they can't complain that people didn't see it because the audience is intolerant. The same for people like Elizabeth Banks, she crapped on dudes before her Charlie's Angels movie and said "don't see the movie" but when it bombed at the box office, she complained that men didn't see it and were "$3xist"...when the problems in these movies are quality based and maybe the people involves weren't ready for the opportunities they were handed.
@@grinningwombat Umm yes they did. There are plenty of interviews with people from the 40s, 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s and 2000s of directors and actors calling out the audience for not coming to their movies. Movie discourse didn't when you started watching them you know.
“Go back to talking about Ant-Man’s suit!” 😂
You guys wildly overestimate how much star power matters for people when it comes to the decision of which movies to watch. I’d say we could probably count on one hand the number of stars that actually puts butts in seats these days. And even they aren’t guarantees anymore. Bullet train or Killers of the flower moon didn’t exactly blow up the box office even with Leo and Brad on the cast.
I really don’t think Javier as Galactus would move the needle for many people.
I think Bullet Train did pretty well box office wise.
Yeah I think John overstates celeb relevance these days .
Considering the complaint has been that Pedro Pascal has been overexposed, possibly too famous to be in this movie, now the complaint is Galactus isn't played by someone famous enough? For these particular characters, people are wanting to see the Fantastic Four; not the actors/actresses. John made the rebuttal "No one went to see The Marvels"... But there's nuance to that. That's because of the MCU's current track record (at least movie-wise), and the fact it's coming off a Captain Marvel that, while making big bucks, wasn't really all that well-received by fans. Not to mention the fact that Shang Chi is a virtually unknown character as well, and Simu Liu had only been on a small Canadian sitcom; and yet people/fans went to go check out "Shang Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings." I definitely think the level of fame/celebrity is overestimated when it comes to these movies.
Idk man, I really disagree with your take that not casting A-listers only is taking away the magic from Marvel movies. They started out with casting more smaller actors and it went really well. I don't need to see every star in Hollywood become a superhero. Like Ryan Gosling, I gotta be honest, I don't need him in the MCU. Cast a smaller, upcoming actor who can become someone through this role like Hemsworth did for example instead of someone like Gosling were it's just ",Oh look, it's Gosling as XYZ". Idk, just my 2 cents.
Again...that was a different time. They are the big boys now and much is expected.
Appreciated your intense discussion. You both have good points, though i do think Rocha is ultimately right.
Ryan Coogler should do whatever he wants. If thats making Marvel movies, or Vampire movies or "original movies". This notion that film twitter bros peddle about how Coogler wss trapped by Marvel is silly af.
Do what's gonna get you that money.
Another thing too is that Coogler is an extremely personal director. You look at all of his films thus far, even the MCU entries, and you can tell he's not just cash-grabbing or doing a job; they're all movies with some level of messaging and catharsis for him. I don't think he's "trapped" by the bubble of Marvel necessarily. But he's also someone that has a pretty small filmography for someone who's reached his level of fame and praise. Can't the man do both? Lol
When you said "John Malkovitch playing Herbie" I thought you meant the Love Bug
Another great show John and Jeff!!!
Great discussion, guys. You both made valid points.
Shout out ROCHA.
He’s spot on about the white identity stuff.
LADY BIRD is absolutely about a middle-class white culture. I love that movie! But it’s absolutely about white-identity.
(It deserves to exist but let’s be honest about what it’s about)
@@Gus_Magnus choosing to ignore the context of why and to what extent this conversation is based on history seems wild.
Immigrating to a country is different than the history of black folx in America.
Black ppl helped build and sustain this country with free labor for hundreds of years, and still ppl wanna say “well this is a white country, why shouldn’t the culture be for white ppl.”
Those descendent of slaves done deserve no sense of entitlement eh? Just the ppl who bought deserve to be prioritized? They did t put the Capitol up after all…FOH.
Gandalf: "I looked everywhere for the creature gollum, but the enemy found him first" - There, just saved Warner Brothers $150m and the audiance a $15 movie ticket. Seriously though, there is already The Hunt for Gollum fan movie that cost only $5,000 , I dont know why we need a big budget version of a very small side quest.
thanks for the show
Athletic performance can be measured objectively. Points per game, 40 speed, yards per game. These metrics don’t exist in most other fields. Who you think is the best writer is different from who I think is the best writer. Art is subjective and so is merit.
Good writing is not subjective
@@L4zerBe4myou cannot empirically measure how good art or writing is. Even if something is presented with grammar errors, someone may deem the central idea more engaging than something that’s proofed to perfection with a weak hook.
@@jeffbratt4749 Yes, but there are fundamental principles that make for good storytelling that have been well established, the hero’s journey is a good example. If these principles are missing it can often lead to a big part of the audience not connecting to that story at all, like we see a lot today.
Does that argument apply to academia? Ask Asians why they get discriminated against when applying for university.
I respectfully disagree with John on the assertion that Marvel needs to cast “top of the line” actors. The Pedro Pascal casting makes me LESS interested in seeing Fantastic Four, because I’m tired of seeing the guy. However, the Galactus casting has renewed my interest, because it seems outside of the box. I’m interested to see what that actor can do, since I’ve never seen him before. Sure, that’s just my perspective, but I believe there are other longtime fans who may feel the same. I’m tired of the cookie cutter Marvel stuff. The moment they started hiring actors who are too recognizable is the moment they really fell off for me. It’s like when your favorite band goes mainstream and loses the qualities that made them unique in the first place.
@@aquasky77 “personalities may overshadow the character” is a nice way to put it.
"Tired of seeing this guy"? Sounds like you are a hater. It happens all the time. An actor/actress gets hot, and every studio wants them. If you don't like his acting capabilities, that's different.
@@deveircockett8000of course it happens all the time, but that doesn’t mean it’s a good thing. It leads to overexposure, and the more something becomes available, the less valuable it is. In this case, I would equate value with uniqueness. And as someone else said, the actors overshadow the characters.
Always enjoy the show 👍🏼
In all fairness, What the heck does race have to do with roasting Tom Brady! This incessant need to insert identity politics into every facet of media is ruining everything
Yep. Tell the MAGA and anti-woke crowd to stop praising it as finally being able to have no holds barred comedy which is them pushing their identity politics. This doesn't just of one way.
I'm with Jeff John come on stop talking bs
Nah. You become more intelligent.
Hire back the show runner from X-Men 97’ to the Xmen franchise. He gets it!
Idk from the tone of Jeff and John I feel like he's done some bad shit
You guys rock when you're horn to horn. The best part is that you both are right!!
Jeff’s totally right about the stats rant
The problem is the stats are always skewed. 🤷♂️
Thanks!
“How old am I? It’s a Saturday morning cartoon!” 😂 I feel the same way, Jeff.
Nice debate. Gotta side with rocha on this one. Were still in the evolution phase.. it hasnt even been 10 years
This show is so great, every week
Ralph is amazing choice. If people want to see a voiceover of him go watch/play Final Fantasy 16 where he plays as Cid,he’s probably the mvp if we remove Clive of the equation.
Jeff I hear you I do John is also hear you and Jeff you take things way to personally pal . The issue in society is that there is hardly any balance or middle ground . Everybody like to pretend to strongly on either side of opinions and their can be a middle ground to achieve the thing that you especially Jeff claim you want in society .
People may not be familiar with Ineson's work (a lot of video game stuff) but take my word for it that Marvel cooked with this one.
(david kaye who voiced arishem was also a voice actor from games and was well cast also).
Also a David Zaslav backed Embracer Group produced lord of the rings movie does *not* sound appealing.
Jeff Sneider will forever and always be the voice of reason in the space.
Ineson was excellent in the Office and especially the Witch 😊😊😊😊😊
Love it when The Hot Mic gets extra hot!
Hulu Disney Max. It's cable. All the streaming price hikes is a combined cable bill
Love the show btw….
The Tom Brady Roast (and I'm a Fan of his) was the best Comedy since Ricky Gervais at the Golden Globes.
Great show as usual, love you both ❤
Great job keeping your cool with Jeff today John.
I get where Jeff is coming from because most people who haven’t done the (admittedly enormous) work draw the same conclusions that he does.
To Jeff I’d say you’d be a lot less angry and way more understanding if you dive into the mountains of literature on this subject. The people to be mad at are those that got us here by discriminating so hard that the pendulum has to swing hard the other way before reaching equilibrium, not those who are trying to make it better, however correct or incorrect their attempts are, at least they are trying. The people in power have been speaking to equality since the 60s. Marginalized people are simply done waiting for those meager efforts to kick in and are left with the only option they have which is to create their own avenues.
When the system fails you you have to make your own system. If someone doesn’t like that system, I ask, what did you do to make the old system work for everyone, and how did that work out?
Again, much love ☮️
Is Jeff being deliberately obtuse? That he can't grasp the nuance of what Rocha is actually saying, is slightly worrying. Lol
Does Jeff know that Redford was in Captain America?
To me rush is his best work to this day
3:37-3:39 John goes from Rocha to Gil Birmingham (20 years ago)
I have a strong suspicion that Captain America 4: Brave New World will take Thunderbolts release date in May 2025 and Thunderbolts will shift into Fantastic Four's July 2025 release date and Fantastic Four will get moved to October and Blade will get moved into February 2026. Everything shifts forward on the schedule by a little bit. They will probably pull Avengers Kang Dynasty off its 2026 release date (shift to 2027) and replace it with Iron Man 4: Armor Wars and then date Shang-Chi 2 for November 2026.
One thing I know for sure is Ryan Coogler casting and story right if he were to be doing it . I wouldn’t be mad at it .
Fantastic Four is feeling very Phase 1 to me in a good way. Phase 1 wasn't all about huge named stars they just cast whoever was best for the role regardless of their popularity or star power and it paid off big time. Those actors ARE the characters now and the characters are the star and the audience draw. If Pascal, Kirby, Ineson and the gang all just nail their roles the movie will be great. I have a good feeling. I know John said don't compare this to the Phase 1 era but Phase 1 worked for a reason.
Also those X-Men writers make me VERY nervous
Robert Downey Jr., Edward Norton, Jeff Bridges, Gwyneth Paltrow, Scarlett Johansson, Anthony Hopkins, Rene Russo, Tommy Lee Jones, Hugo Weaving, Samuel L Jackson, Don Cheadle, Natalie Portman were not huge stars or had been huge stars when they joined the MCU in Phase 1??? Ummmmmmmm okay.
@@JohnRochaSays All in supporting roles though. And Downey Jr was in the bin prior to Iron Man he wasn't the star he is now. Nobody was rushing to see Thor because Russo and Hopkins were in it, or Captain America for Tommy Lee Jones they were going to Thor the character, and Hemsworth was a total no name. When I saw Cap for the first time I went to see Cap, I didn't even really know who was in it. I'm not saying there were no big names in the MCU in Phase 1, but when there was it was one or two huge stars a movie with a lesser known actor in the main role.
"I see white people!"
😂
Malcovish for the watcher pls!!
WB didn't make the LOTR films so I'm concerned. The last great Middle Earth thing that was greatly received came out 21 years ago. The Hobbit were mid films with some razzie level stuff in there. Rings of Power was mediocre. I don't blame people for being skeptical. Especially with Hollywood loving to run franchises into the ground.
Jeff!👍🤣😆
As usual agree with jeff!
As usual this show continues to be outstanding and brings real convos!!
I love Hobbit movies (and Lotr, obviously), but I'm not exited for more Gollum
Marvel needs to back up a big enough Brinks truck to get DeMayo to write uncredited.
I don’t understand studios’ obsession with Javier Bardem.
Sony getting rid of an already existing streaming platform to put their stuff on would be beyond stupid.
OMG yes Ralph Ineson is scary and profound I love it.
1:08:17 Ironic that Jeff has this take lol
John thanks for continuing to support women and POC. Kudos to you.
Another week where Rocha poo poos any announcement that isn’t led by Leo or written by Aaron Sorkin. Bardem versus Ineson makes no difference at the box office. Having Bardem listed 7th on the poster doesn’t move the needle for general audiences, especially a voice role.
Yeah. He wouldn't be 7th on the cast list. He'd be up near the top of the poster as the MAIN VILLAIN. Again...the MAIN VILLAIN.
@@JohnRochaSays you would be right if this was a case like thanos or killmonger, human villains or villains with similar characteristics to the actor. Galactus will literally be a creature made in cgi, one of which we will only hear his voice, similar to the celestials in eternals, after all fans will go for this famous character and the audience will want to see the spectacle, here it doesn't matter to hire high level talent
@@owenharrison761 You have NO IDEA what Marvel has planned for Galactus. They have "humanized" all these powerful beings be they from space or not. You can't speak knowledgeably about what you have no clue about in terms of the script or story they will tell. And you always want to hire high level talent. All the actors here are high level talent. I was talking about mainstream people knowing who they are which will inspire them to come see the movie. Big difference.

Jeff I am black. Love ya! I like how you state how you feel. We have to be honest, so we can understand each other.

Women have always had representation in Hollywood.
Scott Eastwood is still around.
I see your point, but all my black friends love how baller Tony Stark is 😅
1:04:36 Couldn't agree more. I've said this before. The identity politics that are going around nowadays is just making the divide bigger, kind of the opposite of the point.
Ok, I was with you Jeff, then you lost me...
If you combine Jeff and John's point of view you get the best argument. Give opportunities to everyone and if two people are equally as good give it to the minority. But don't make movies based on check lists... that's when you lose half the audience...
@@movieace1295 They've been doing movies based on check lists since the dawn of movies. "We need a good looking male lead. Check. We need a good looking female lead. Check. She has to be hot so we can put her in skimpy clothes or tight fitting clothes. Check. Make sure they're white. Check. Make sure they're skinny and in shape. Check." There are exceptions but there have ALWAYS been checklists.

@@JohnRochaSaysYESSSSS. People who act like checking boxes is new dont get that. They’ve always been checking boxes but instead of in favor of diversity they were boxes in favor of whiteness. And hell most movies still cast in favor of whiteness.
Lord of the Rings hardcore fans really want to see The Silmarillion well done. There is nothing else. Come on! It's a no brainer. But we need a new Peter Jackson, a Silmarillion nut of the level of Denis Villeneuve as a Dune nut. This is a problem. These things can't be made by just anyone. You need a big director-fan who will do of it the project of his (or her, or their) life. (...)
We don't need A-listers in Marvel movies. We need good scripts and good directing. That would do the trick
Caitlyn Clark is popular because she's the Stephen Curry of the Women's basketball world. Even if she was black, she'd be put on a pedalstal too. It's basketball were talkin' about here.
Plenty of black players have come thru who were just as good if not better than Caitlin and haven't garnered the attention she has. It has everything to do with timing AND her skills.
@@JohnRochaSays bs...Plenty of great players have come through women's basketball. But, Clark and Ionescu are the first two to stretch the floor in women's basketball. If it was a black person, they'd get the same amount of fame.

We can leave Ionescu out of it. I just put her in the conversation because she stretched the floor before Clark did.
I think it can be easier to immerse yourself in a movie if the actors are unknown. A-listers can be distracting sometimes. There should be a balance of both. Actors don’t necessarily draw people to movies as much as they used to. Either way though, I just want a good movie at the end of the day.
Fair point. It always depends on the movie.
Why not apply this representation argument to sports?
Surely you're more likely to get discriminated against if you're putting more personal information on a form? The less they know the more likely it is to be equal, right?
John wanting them to hire mega stars for all of the major characters in F4, then if they do that and the movie costs 300-400 million dollars, watch him complain about that. I don't want Bardem as Galactus, I just want a good actor and I don't need to know him/her before I watch the movie.
Man Harloff and Rocha could have a great discussion, Harloff always going on about how he wants the studios to spend less money and Rocha wanting Disney to spend way more money to get big stars in all of the roles.
High level talent is not 300-400M. Thats way overstating it. You can still hire high level talent and keep it under $200M.
@@JohnRochaSays ofcourse high level talent alone won't make it cost between 300-400 million, but this is a big budget Marvel movie, it probably already have a budget of 200+ million, if they hired big stars in all of the major roles I could easily see it go past 300 million
