  • This 1977 Trans Am is the last Bandit car ever owned by Burt Reynolds. Made popular by Smokey and the Bandit, the 1977 Pontiac Trans Am is an iconic movie car that is sought after today. After the movie, General Motors sold thousands of these black and gold special edition Trans Ams. See the story behind this gorgeous example.

    Actually Burt's last Trans Am was a 1979 and he signed the dash. It sold in Florida for $317,500. Also, as Hal Needham said, only 3 Trans Ams were used in the movie, 1 for advertising or up close scenes and 2 for stunts.

    This car and the 68 Charger and 68 Mustang in Bullitt started it all for me 40 years ago. The 77 front grille really makes the car so iconic. When the grille changed in 79 the Trans Am went down a couple notches, nothing great lasts forever..

      @ robertwheatley2471. I’m probably ten years older than you are because the first two sports cars that I fell in love with were the 1963 Sting Ray when I saw it running on the road at a red light next to my father’s car and the 64 and a half Mustang that we saw on display the 64 Worlds Fair in New York just before they made their official debut on the market. The only other cars I noticed at the time were the 65 Riviera, 65 Sedan Deville and the 66 Imperial as well as the 4dr Continental convertible. It was a great time for cars and an amazing time to be alive and to listen to the radio. Everything seemed so hopeful. We even had a traveling sprinkler that rolled up the hose by itself and shut itself off when it came close to the house at the end of its route. Everything seemed like the future was going to be amazing. We were on our way the moon for goodness sake’s. I wonder what happened.

      @@LlyleHunter -Born in '67 I like all cars from the '50s and 60s. They had individual style and character unlike the cars today. Mostly I prefer musclecars having owned a 70 SS350 in the 80's and then eventually a '69 Charger R/T 440 with a *factory* 4-speed that I took to car shows. I've made several mistakes over the years but selling that Charger in '96 was one of the biggest mistakes I ever made.

    I was 9 years old when the movie came out. Always wanted one of those cars. But the sad truth is that despite the enormous engine displacement they were completely smogged out with emissions crap due to the energy crisis of the 1970s. 180 hp.......Accord numbers. Decent amount of torque, I guess. The restomods have 700hp engines stuffed into them but the ass end kicks out with just a touch on the throttle.

    My Uncle bought a black and gold TA new in 1977. He is no longer with us but my Aunt still has it, 8500 original miles. Still has the factory rubber and original battery, according to my Aunt, its never even seen rain, and my uncle had more time waxing it than he did in the drivers seat. He picked it up from the dealership in June of 77, immediately drove to the college where she was still in school, took her to watch the movie in then proposed later that evening. Suffice to say that car has some sentimental value and wont be going up for sale any time soon.

    OK a lot of things to cover here, 1. The engine call out on the Shaker hood scoop is wrong for 3 reasons on that car. 1st the cars in the movie have the call out 6.6 Litre which was used for the base 400 pontiac engine which had 180 hp and 325 ft lb of torque, 2. The TA 6.6 call out is for the W72 400 which cameout in 1977 with 220hp and 320 ft lbs ,it also had factory chrome valve covers. 3. The engine shown in this video is not a Pontiac engine it is a 403 Olds engine the oil fill tube in front of the shaker is a dead give away. It had 185hp and 320 ft lbs . The W72 was carried on to 1979 and was factory rated at that time 220 hp and 320 ft lbs the cars in fact put out 260-280 net hp and could 1/4 mile in high 15 to low 14 sec range. The 1979 w72 came with a 4 spd manual trans only.

    • @tomcherry7029
      @tomcherry7029 Před 6 měsíci +2

      @blackbird1448 the factory rating for the 1977 was 200hp , because it was available with both the Manual and automatic transmissions the automatic draws more hosre power to run that the 4 speed manual., W72 is a performance package for the L78 400 they are both L78 engines . The 220hp factory rating was an under-rated number .

      @@blackbird1448- go easy on our informed friend, lol...! When you look at the way he’s set out all that he’s written, it seems to me he’s simply made a mistake & written 220 instead of 200. He seems to be aware that 220 is an uplift... with best wishes, Jeff,
      PS - I’m old & in U.K. & brought up on Lambretta scooters, Triumph motorcycles in the ‘60’s and Austin Minis & Ford Capri V6 3 litres in the ‘70’s. However, before I ‘settled down’(!), in ‘84 bought a built-for-U.K. ‘79 Trans Am and ran it as my daily driver for 7 years... Tho’ it was 403, 7” rims, no bird/tops, etc., I loved driving this car. The best thing about this car was that it stood in a dockside warehouse for 2 years and was first registered in U.K. Nov ‘80. On its first Inspection in Nov ‘83 it had only done 3000 miles and only had 9000 miles on it when I bought it from the still first owner. He’d really looked after it; ‘looked brand new inside & out! Again, best wishes, Jeff

The 1981 had a different body design which was used in Smokey and the Bandit 3. The General Lee Charger that is in the back of their garage, see 1:51 n in the background is a 1970 Charger. So what he's saying is is that there are no actual promotion or in film used trans ams? They were all pretty much totally destroyed? So when we see Burt Reynolds signing one of these it's just somebody who duplicated a replica as best anyone could? And he gives it his stamp of approval 100 Grand I mean if it's not actually one of the cars used in the film that they could have taken care of it and not done so many crazy things, then yeah I can imagine spending a hundred grand on that car. An actual film used car. The 1978 from Smokey and the Bandit II was the Kick-Ass one for me. I mean to me that's the one. I mean the Pinnacle is the 78
