- In today's video, we set up our very first saltwater aquarium, a Waterbox 20 Cube. This will be a nano reef build, and we can't wait to get it going!
We walked through all of the equipment and setup of this saltwater tank. Quinn went higher end on some of the products used. There are definitely ways of going cheaper with a saltwater tank, but he wanted to splurge on some quality products with this one.
Stay tuned for an update on this Waterbox 20 Cube, as we'll be setting up a refugium and adding corals/fish to this system once the tank is cycled.
If you're interested in the equipment used in the this Waterbox Aquarium, you can find it some of it on BulkReefSupply.com, InTankAquatics.com, or at the Amazon affiliate links below:

Thanks for watching, and we'll see you next week!
love to see anew saltwater tank being set up good luck cant wait to see it with corals and fish 👍🏻
People make saltwater tanks sound more difficult than they really are. Don’t over feed and do routine water changes. Easy
Setting up a new reef tank, regardless of size, is so exciting. Putting research & knowledge to the test to create an eco-system is so satisfying 👍
Couldn’t agree more!
That looks totally neat ! .....exiting to see you guys doing saltwater now & can't wait to see what you stock it with !!!🤙
Looks great. Can’t wait to see fish and coral in it.
Welcome to the addiction!!!
This video came right on time! Setting up my first salt water tank not sure of the gallons yet but anywhere from 75-125. My husband is not into the hobby so it’s just me going from freshwater to saltwater.
That’s great! Good luck on the setup, I know it’s a lot to learn 👍🏻
Yes!! I raised freshwater fish professionally in Sweden before moving to America and then turned saltwater and have never looked back.....be careful! You picked a really nice setup....have fun!
Very nice. It’s definitely fun to learn about this side of the hobby. Feel like I’ve learned a ton but still a long way to go!
@@CichlidBros Subscribe to BRS tv.....so much good advice..good luck!
Me too i have 3 freshwater tanks for 5 years and i just set up a saltwater tank like 2 weeks ago cause it takes almost 1 month for the water to get rigth but its looking nice coral growing fast and fish big and healthy
Tank looks great. You are definitely doing it right! You may want to move the skimmer into the second chamber. I feel like it will get clogged up easily in the sock. You will probably have to change air blocks less too. Along for the ride!
my sock was way to thick
Wow love this tank! Good job!
You followed me a while back when I was doing terrarium and freshwater, I have been in the saltwater hobby for about 7 months after studying for like 12 months! I love that you guys are doing saltwater now, I’ve gotta do an update walking thru my sumped 40 breeder setup!
We are running so much of the same equitment!
i been doing research on a reef tank but your video made it 100% easier.
Glad it was helpful! Best of luck 👍🏻
I just stumbled upon your channel and was quite taken aback when you filmed the front of the store... where I also shop! Ha!
Love the aquasquape 🤩❤️
Congrats 🎉
Nice setup! 👍
Awesome video, I actually have a 125 mixed reef tank, but travel for work and tired of as much maintenance lol looking to purchase the 20 cube
Top Video at the right time. 👍 Since a long time i am thinking of setting up my first little saltwater tank. 😃
Awesome. Hope it was helpful!
Very nice.. thanks for the video.
I just got my first Nano saltwater tank as well! I got a 10 gallon.🔥
How was ur reeftank now sir?
@@sintogendeng6418 going great I got a playlist on my channel.
I can't wait for the next update video 🙏
Coming soon!
Looks good 👍
Thanks man!
Great idea awesome 👏
Thank you!
Blessing 👍 💪
Awesome salt water tank
The one thing I recommend is switching out that refractometer for a Hanna salinity checker. Makes life so much easier and no guessing
I’ve been thinking about getting a Hanna but don’t you need to buy extra calibration solution since it needs to be calibrated often?
@@josephmancuso6521 depends. The salinity checker is recommended to calibrate about once a month or so for max accuracy. All the lfs I've been to sell the packets for less than $1 each. It amounts to less than what it would be to buy the calibration fluid for a refractometer
foxchase 72 thanks for that info! What are your thoughts on an Apera pc60 5 in 1? They’re like 50$ more than the Hanna but they also do pH and TDS which is nice. I just have a FOWLR tank for now but I figured it’s best to get the right equipment now for when I get some corals/gsp next month
This video is very helpful!
Love the desk awesome job
Thank you!
Awesome video.
I love both sides of the aquarium hobby. I have both fresh and salt. It’s expensive but worth it. Both are beautiful just saltwater has so much more rules and complications. It’s a big headache especially when you encounter ich... because eventually you will😂
Your videos are fabulous
Good job sir 👍👍👍👍👍
When your local fish store just casually has a barracuda
It looks beautiful! I'm really interested in trying one. Not planning on having any fish but I'd love to have some decorations. Just need to do some research first because I don't really have any knowledge about these things.
Nice setup. I just jumped right in to a saltwater tank myself. Quinn you should switch to Stagg so you can teach my kids 😁 I’ll help you move the tanks lol
Great set up! Haha 😃👍🏻
Maybe collaborate when you get it up and running? Cooperative learning? Haha. Something fun? I was a teacher for 25. 🤪
@@TOMReefer thank you! sorry for the late reply - just saw this comment. I actually learned a lot from your videos prior to the setup - you'll probably see a lot of similarities between our tanks!
love the video!!! setting up a 60 gallon saltwater right now!! already got a 5 gallon set up. let me know if you need any help
I need help
Ok your located in Chicago me as well💯💯💪🏼
Yup 👊🏻👊🏻
I almost bought the same tank for a freshwater aqua scape but the glass seems more suitable to reef system. Will go the ADA route.
Looks great ! You are going to need to turn the MP10 so that the cord is pointing up. This takes stress off the cord and keeps the motor from falling off the tank. Also you might want to take a look at the Tunze 9001 DC Skimmer, it fits in the center chamber and is a proper skimmer for reefkeeping.
Thanks! And noted. I’ll look into that 👍🏻
Nice 👍
Prediction: Eventually you’ll switch out that ReefGlass skimmer for something much better like a Tunze Comline DOC skimmer.
For now you might considering buying a skimmer waste collector with float switch to avoid overflows.
Prediction: Eventually he won't have a skimmer in this small of a tank and he'll end up having a serious tank over 50 gallons.
Would love to see some maintenance updates and any tips for beginners after your success. Cheers.
More to come soon!
This video is amazing!!! So when you guys adding sharks?
Lesson learned I bought a EXT IM Lagoon 25, do yourself a favor and get the tank with the AIO, save yourself a lot of money not having to buy a sump big return pump and an expensive skimmer. This tank looks amazing, easy to be successful without a lot of money to spend.
Looks awesome can’t wait to see it fully stocked. How is old orchard aquarium’s freshwater fish selection? I usually go to aquarium adventure.
Thanks! Old orchard had a great mix of salt and fresh water. Aquarium adventure has a larger selection overall, but old orchard seems to have the best saltwater
Love the video brother. Deserves the sub!
Thank you. Much appreciated!
Congrats on having EVERYTHING before setting up. Was gonna say you probably don't need the skimmer turned on until you add fish but it looks like you had it off in the reveal. Really love the scape too! Do you know which direction you're going with coral? Some great stores in Chicago - Tank It Easy is probably the closest to you. Looks like you're in the city. I had a hard time ever walking out of Blue Line Coral in Naperville without buying something...just some ideas. I'm sure you already know this but new to the channel. CZcams must be suggesting you now because you went SALT.
Thank you, and welcome to the channel! Still researching the exact corals I’m gonna go with, but yep, will likely go to one of those stores, or possibly Gingerbread Corals or Old Orchard. Lots to learn but getting there 👌🏻
This tank is dope, clean and simple. Do you think this would be a good tank for a 2.5inch mantis shrimp?
Welcome to the salt life, you should buy a smart power bar, that way you can control equipment from your phone, specially when doing water changes. unless your going to go the controller route. Good luck, looks good👍✅
Fresh will be you're number one until its not ; ) happy reefing! (I still have a 100 gall Alto. Comp/Calvis tank but my 150 gal reef is the #1)
RODI unit is good if you have larger tank requiring more water change volume and if you have an accessible water supply. i’m also planning to do a refugium or skimmer... either/or, maybe both.
Very nice. Those were my thoughts as well. Just knowing myself, this isn’t the last (or biggest) saltwater tank I’ll eventually have
I grew up near the ocean, sadly I had to move away when I was 14. Every time I go to the beach/scuba diving reminds me of when I was little. Building my first reef tank has been a dream, having that little piece of the ocean at home.
Great video!
Thanks for sharing!
Did you already give out the info for your desk/stand carpenter? I’m considering a similar setup in my home office space. Your setup is great and I can’t wait to follow along.
Thank you! Feel free to DM us on Instagram and we’ll pass along the info 👍🏻
Nice setup, what’s the total cost invested before fish coral etc?
Yo!! Old orchard is my favorite fish store
It’s an awesome place!
👍
Cheep rout alert! Jebao DC powerbeads have been good for me. I've had 2 over a year and one I've had over 3 years and they are still going strong . They are 1/10 the price of the MP 40 I have.
I love this tank! Do you still have it up and running?! I would love to see an update! I’m new here!
Thanks! We have a handful of videos on the channel of the progress over time
New tank you won’t need a protein skimmer until you have a bio load! Also you’ll need to get the air bubbles smaller to catch the dissolved organic waste should skim dry
I didn’t keep the skimmer on until I added fish. It’s running smoothly now
Hi, very helpful video. Thanks.
Did you put the carbon too? If yes, which part?
Thanks! I replaced the carbon when I added the refugium a bit later
You have probably addressed this by now but the level sensor should not be placed in the exit chamber. If the system gets slightly clogged, and it will, the level in the last chamber will lower and definatelly it can and will overflow your tank. cheers
How many rocks did you combine to create that? Looks amazing will try to copy it any tips
Hey, do you need/use the sponge and filter sock, even if you have the skimmer?
Setting up Samar system myself. Looks like you followed Tom Reefers setup. He knows his stuff!
Exactly! He was one of the main people we followed and learned from. Great stuff
Cichlid Bros yup, he knows his stuff. BTW had a 70 gallon Malawi back in the day.
I just got a cube 20 but it’s gonna be a freshwater planted aquarium, the only fish I plan on putting in it is a pair of apistogramma
Very nice
nice tank man. quick question how come you chose the cube 20 instead of the peninsula mini 25
Great setup. What kind of rock is that that you are using?
I'm thinking of making the return into 2 1/2 nozzle what do u think about flow
Hey! Nice tank!
I started my waterbox 20 cube about 4 months ago as well. First time in the saltwater hobby. Been doing fresh for over 20 plus years.
Right now I have 2 clowns, 2 scarlet hermits, 2 blue legged hermits, and 4 trochus snails.
Corals- frogspawn, hammer, acan, gsp, purple Xenia, mushroom, fox.
Very similar to yours without the fire shrimp.
Are you planning to add any other fish? I really want to add a royal gramma or pink streaked wrasse, at least a green clown goby but I also want to keep bio load low. If you plan on adding a fish what would you get? Thanks and looking forward to your next update!
Thanks for watching! I might not get any more fish for awhile, but will be adding more corals soon. Down the line a bit I might add a goby, but not sure yet
Cool video. How quiet is the unit? And are you able to get a low flow put of the pump that comes with the unit? I was looking at getting the Peninsula 15 for my home office and doing a planted Betta tank but don't want to blast the hell of him with some water return that's too powerful.
Thanks! Overall it’s been very quiet. The pump that comes with the Waterbox has a dial to turn down the flow if needed
Have you thought about taking the Peninsula mini? It has more depth.
What setting do you have on the sicce pump I have the same tank and I just got 1.0 but I have to have it on the lowest setting since the water level in the return pump compartment gets so low?
Is that CaribSea live rock? If so what package is that? Also with your protein skimmer, each time that you restart it do you have to prime it every time?
CichlidBros + saltwater = saltwater cichlids? 🤔 Have been thinking about getting into saltwater for a while. Will be interesting to follow this project. Best of luck! 👍
Haha, you might be on to something there 😂. We’ll keep everyone posted, especially when adding the corals and fish soon!
You guys rock !! You have inspired me to do a saltwater tank . Of course I will start small
Awesome! Best of luck with the new setup 👌🏻
really nice,
May I ask which kind of Caribsea sand are you using? Fiji or special grade?
Thanks! It’s fiji
Love it! Congrats on taking the saltwater plunge 🙌🏼
Thank you! Excited to try it out finally
When you first added all the water to ur tank was is the water u bought from ur local pet store? And if so how do you know if the salinity would be correct?
POWEREDBYSICCE
Most reliable pumps out there!
Looks great! I freaked out a little for you when I saw you rub the the glass with a cloth after putting the sand in. End up with any scratches? I hate them so much I am endlessly paranoid.
Thanks! And nope, all good. Used a new rag for it
Love this! You brothers are amazing!
In your experience, what do you think about sicce syncra pump?
One of the best pumps in my experience
Great video one big nono 😢 you did dont ever put the heater in the same compartment as the return pump ⛽
What pump you use cus mine loud asf at night
Love Old Orchard. The owner is super funny. Have you guys ever visited Fish Planet in Deerfield?
Actually haven’t made it there. Any good?
@@CichlidBros Between Fish Planet, Old Orchard, and Aquarium Adventure, Fish Planet is my go to. They easily have the best prices, knowledge and the healthiest fish. Store itself isn't huge compared to the other two, but the quality and variety is great for both fresh & saltwater. Definitely recommend. Great video as always btw.
Jake awesome, I’ll have to check it out soon
how do you like that flipper nano?
Hello and thank you for posting this video. Is it possible that you can show a video without music in the background just to see how loud or not loud the tank is when running? My spouse is concerned about the noise level. Thank you in advance
What is the wave maker model u use??
Can you update us on it I just got the same tank and wanna do the same setup please do a in depth setup tour of the tank
Yep, we’ll be showing it again soon. But here’s one of the latest videos: czcams.com/video/mwntr09XPes/video.html
Can we get an update on this tank??
how much did u spend for the 20L cube and exactly which one is it from the website they have like 30 choices on the same tank on there website
It’s the Waterbox cube 20. I believe the tank and light together was $400 or so
Will I need a heater and a cooler for my fish if I’m wanting a saltwater aquarium?
The chiller depends on the temperature of your house. The heater is a must
You shouldn’t have done that... now you will need to change your name to coral bros!!! Hahahaha it gets addicting!
Haha, that has a nice ring to it 👍🏻
I just got the same aquarium. What is the reason of going with that type of skimmer over a regular one (Tunze?)
Maximiliano Nardi , the reef glass skimmers are really small, and fit nicely into the first back overflow compartment on the WB 20 cube 👍🏻😊
May i ask where is a good source of information. I’m interested into the hobby and don’t know where exactly to research from. What “sites/books” did you read or watch to care for a Nani reef aquarium?
Nice. Let me ask you, the company say, it is also possible to use the Waterbox 20 Cube as a freshwater aquarium. Is it loud? I think to use it in the room of my son. But I am not sure if it is too noisy. Thank you.
It's a pretty quiet tank overall, and I haven't had issues. I did change out the stock pump to a Sicce pump, which is super quiet
@@CichlidBros Hi, thank you, is it possible to get such filtration system in a sleeping room? For freshwater we need only filtration.
Don’t you have to replace that air stone every once in awhile on that protein skimmer?
Just set up my Waterbox 20 today and immediately noticed I might want a stronger pump. Which Syncra Silent did you get: 1.0 - 1.5 - 2.0? Are you still happy with it? Thanks, and best of luck.
I went with the 1.0 and have been very happy with it. Would recommend for sure
@@CichlidBros I appreciate it; thanks!
What was the cost of everything shown?
