I love these videos, some times I have to grin and bear it through the ott coms talk and the general seriousness of the guys. "Tacoma Do you Copy?" "Land Cruiser we copy." "Roger that, you are updated...", I don't know, a more light-hearted tone would make these even more enjoyable. And really, don't take your vehicle off-road if you are going to throw a fit whenever you scratch or damage it. Outside of that, I enjoy seeing where you guys go.

Great video. Just a little suggestion about adding some materials for your expedition. First snowshoes, extra 10 gallons of fuel by truck, ice studs chain and double the cross chains on it, it keep a better momentum, a bungie sling 50 feet 4" wide by vehicule, higher tires and narrow one is better than the big one who pull a lot of power and fuel, an induction stove with an inverter instead of that camping material and you will never run out of fuel with a small 2x10x10". A SPOT GPS transmitter, in case of emergency, alpinist have that. ( one by vehicule). a second alternator and a second battery. A chainsaw for making a branch pillow ( fur have better flottation than pine) to gain traction instead of moving your traction aid. About your trailer: better use a light aluminum one with 4 wheels instead of two = better flotation and less draging plus greater stability and less weight on your hitch. About clothing: When you sweat, remove your hat before it is too hot, unzip your jacket a bit and work slowly keep a towel to dry your hair, in the truck. Work by short period and relax for the same amount of time, it is avoiding adrenaline rush and keep your strenght for a longer period of time and it give you time to think about what you are doing, it is almost impossible to think Under adrenaline rush. A satellite phone could be useful to ask the road condition to the local police or for emergency, it cost a lot less than you think and a life is priceless. Always fun to think about rigs but you have to be first. Have fun.

Holy production quality, Batman. Excellent stuff again. Living in the countryside in Finland, my advice would be to skip the all-terrains for winter travel and go with some actual winter tires. For snow like that, you want thin, high-profile tires with studs. Nobody ever EVER uses snow chains in Finland, everyone uses high-quality winter tires.

I'm glad I came across this channel. Your videos are very inspirational. They make me realize that I take to much time living around my career as a helicopter inspector for the Navy, and not my own life. The videos actually sadden me and make me realize that I need to get out into the bush and experience/enjoy mother nature for what it is vs watching videos online of people doing these adventures because I enjoy work. I've come to the conclusion that if all I do is work and watch videos, I will never be able to appreciate the outdoors. I have already planned a trip from Virginia to Yellowstone for the spring time. No hotels...I want to camp out the whole way there and back. Thank you for the videos, thank you for the inspiration.

some advice from living in Montana all my life and deep snow traveling. Softer narrowed rubber tires on your vehicles that hard rubber tire your using not made for snow. when you by chains get the spiked key locking chains that way you have traction and chains never come loose. with all that you can push deep snow easy.

Being from ND. Is nothing like Canadian winters. In the future it would be sound to have a trailer for all the vehicles with TRAX. If you've heard of them, you replace your wheels with trax that mount on the hub. Go over any terrain with ease. And in addition, extra fuel cans mounted on the rear for each vehicle. 2 - 5 gallon cans. This way you don't have to put another vehicle in the position of being stuck going after fuel. Anything you think you don't need. You'll need.. Been there and been stuck many times. It's not a good feeling. And being in Canada out in the middle of no where..sucks.

From someone that overlands in the snow (after all I do live in BC) Best practice is chain up both back wheels and one front wheel. With chains on it is really easy to break an axle if all 4 are chained up, you want some slip in the drive train. You also want the front to float a little while the back grips.

This is too good, too funny! I have been watching all your videos over the last week or two, not in chronological order since the weather here has been really drab rain! As soon as this episode started I knew exactly where you guys were all headed. I live (and snowboard!) in beautiful little Fernie. Last weekend my wife and I wanted to shed our cabin fever from the rain, jumped into the truck and headed out. Only too funny to see that we went to the same backcountry route! Only not as far as Banff... We go to Whiteswan hot springs often, but never really past it, so that's what we did, evidently so did you. Except you went a lot farther, a lot farther. We just went back home after a little more exploration down Whiteswan FSR. Love your videos, all of them. I don't normally comment or post online, rather I sit back and watch quietly and have been enjoying your adventures across this continent. But I just had to say something this time. You have fans all over the world, I'm sure, just wanted to say you even have them in the small towns you drive (and ski) through. Can't wait to see what you come up with next for us to watch and enjoy.

First off, I love all the videos. However, you guys are getting a little too upset over a dented fender I think. Yes, they neglected the noise, but it's not worth getting upset about body damage to an adventure vehicle. When I bought my Jeep it was still in very nice shape, but I knew I was going to modify it and use it hard, and promised myself I wouldn't get upset about scratches, dings, dents, etc. Damage is going to happen.

Thanks in advance!

    • @ExpeditionOverland
      @ExpeditionOverland  Před 10 lety +6

Hey Ryan thanks for watching! In answer to your question, the Landcruiser has the V8 engine and pulled the trailer a lot better than the original Tacoma that you see in these episodes. It was a 'power' decision for us. The Tacoma can pull it, it just really felt the weight with everything we had to haul.
However, now, the new Tacoma pulls the trailer as we just recently installed a TRD Supercharger on it. Pulls like a champ!

ExpeditionOverland How come that you didn´t have the car without the trailer driving first to "plow" tracks for the car with the extra resistance from the trailer? Even if that car has a more powerfull engine it still has to both "plow" and has the extra resistance from the trailer. That makes it harder to keep the momentum up. I live in the far north of Sweden and here thats more or less the obvious way to do it. Would be interesting to hear your thougts.

I run General Grabber AT2's and I've driven forest roads in ten plus inches of virgin snow, no problems. They're good tires. Just sometimes if there's too much snow, nobody's going anywhere easily no matter what tires they run. They were running chains and still having difficulty - that tells you something.

BF Goodrich all Terrain are the worst in snow and mud. They pack in and you might as well have racing slicks. Hate that tire. Desert travel is ok, I guess. But just been burned sooo many times by that tire.

    Great video!
Why'd you guys pull the chains off? Did the one get damaged when it was throwing around on the front wheel?

First rule of Snow Chains is "Snow" chains, they get on and they stay on. Obviously, when not re-tightnening them one might hear an unfamiliar sound outside and what do we do then ? We stop and have a look. "Inspect, not expect".
After the snow chains first re-tightening one pretty much is ready to go anywhere. -But then again, sitting in front of a PC and typing words is something different than being outdoors putting snow chains on a tyre with freezing fingers and miles to go.
I recogn they did good, learning by doing as it is. They get my vote.

Yet again an amazing story told in a truthful and beautiful manner. Incidentally, when would have you been through Banff? I was visiting from Christmas 2013 until the end of the first week of 2014.

Hey guys! Looking to put a RTT on my Toyota T100 for some summer camping with a quick set up and tear down. I just want to know how warm those ARB tents are with the freezing Canadian cold? Also what bags are you guys using? Big Agnes, REI, Marmot.. Well thanks for the videos, much love coming from Summit County Colorado!

13:00 5 pounds is perfect. Snow chains are useless, if there is so much snow, that your car just digs itself in.

I live in Alberta just East of where this was shot. Chains do help they provide extra grab to snow especially when you dont have proper winter tires.

Hey Guys! Hello from Nebraska! In this episode you run across a bump in the road where the Land Cruiser gets stuck in the snow and every starts getting irritable. Clay then goes to speak briefly about the importance of communication in regards t group dynamics. I feel this is not only useful on the trail but also within any business or team.
My question to you is do you have any recommended reads with the topics of Group Dynamics or Communication being the main concepts touched on?

Too bad the Cruiser didn't have some Bridgestone Bizzak tires on , it would be interesting to see if good snow tires would get them through.

Subaru Forester or Outback with all season or snow tires will outperform any other in deep snow. Try one. You'll never go back to Yuppy 4WD again.
