As someone who enjoys statistics and having things broken down, I really enjoyed this video and can say I finally fully understand the shiny rates
Nice man me too
Same. I guess I got really lucky on my shiny 3 star articuno lol
can you explain how to calculate the probability of succes? like the doing the 1 in 20, 20 times only having 65% of succes? i searched on google etc but im clueless
I enjoy the calm tone speech. Sub @trainertips
Ledyba’s shiny rate is 1/2,033 though 🤔 explain
I value and appreciate you taking the time to explain the shiny rate ratios. In fact, I will be spending less money moving forward. Thank you for taking the time to explain and provide details on your recent videos. I am enjoying them.
One tip, if you have bad luck at raids or your internet lags, you could get a free raid pass by complaining to niantic support
@@Felix-dh9tl I was not aware of that option. Thank you 🙏🏼
@@CraynosGaming No problem! I got 1 free pass yesterday by complaining to the support which you can just quickly access in game
@@Felix-dh9tl is it a remote pass?
@@cartersell9676 yes
Love the throwback footage at the beginning. Takes me back
Thanks for making this video, I feel like it's an important PSA to teach/remind people of how these hidden game mechanics work. The probability/statistics behind shiny encounter rates can be pretty misleading for setting people's gameplay expectations, and it's important to remember that there's never a 100% guarantee that you'll find a shiny (outside of the occasional special research reward, like the shiny Mew, Ditto, and Gyarados encounters)
Thank you for this info vid Nick! Great stuff, and it's really good to see you enjoying the content again. It shows!
I just really wanna share that when Nick talked about the blue dog, it hit me in my soul because I’m at 130 raids - most of which were remote - trying for a shiny Rockruff and I still don’t have a shiny. So yeah, at your own caution, folks, you don’t always get rewarded.
It was the exact same with Axew, about 90 raids and 40 wild encounters, as a ticket holder, and no shiny. I reap what I sow.
Mine was no luck on raid but i got shiny rockruff on GBL reward..
I literally have 1 blue dog 😭 I don't even know how many raids I've done I don't wanna look
Same did at least 80 before the first shiny. Then hatched my only 10km picked from the start of the event and got a shiny ...
Then there’s me saying YES!! I just want my blues clues. And yes it’s name will be blue when I finally get it
Same problèm with thé blue puppy
Super helpful, also love watching your vids to stay on top of these events. Great information always
Thanks for the awesome video. It has been so long since you did this kind of OG Trainer Tips video i.e. explaining things from basic and I enjoyed watching it so much. I've been following you since 2019 and always love these kinds of informative videos. Thanks for the awesome video Nick!
Nick, We REALLY have been enjoying this type of content again... as much as we love your Vlogs, there is a HUGE place for you to keep grinding out these types of vids too! Really appreciate everything, looking forward to the future.. Stay safe friend!
Thank you Nick, even though I knew it already, I really needed this video now 😊 after how unlucky I am with shinies during adventure week (understood 0) I needed to hear that it's alright 😅😊
Thank you, Nick, for making this video. For a new video not having a lot of new video content you seemed upbeat and had a lot of great knowledge of the rates. I like the adventure videos a bit more but with all the great info in this video it is going on the stack of videos to rewatch, which I have been doing a lot of lately.
I think a way Niantic could seriously improve the game is to gradually increase the shiny rate of a pokemon the more you catch that pokemon, and it resets when you finally catch it.
No
There would be even less demand for shiny pokemon
Like chain fishing or dex radar? That'd be cool. Especially for us rural players
No
Hell no
Thank you for all your information over the last few years!
Just when I think I have bad luck, I find out it balances out.
My first Rockruff is a decent shiny and I had no idea.
Love this video Nick. Its very thoughtful and helpful of you to make this video for the community.
super helpful and interesting video, it was really easy to understand and well spoken, defiantly subscribing!
youve had alot more advice/explenation videos and you seem to really enjoy them and its coming across, i love your content either way but glad to see youre digging making videos so much lately
Nick, I find myself coming back to your channel again every day like it was the first few years, keep it up, daily vids to look forward too.
Good vid bud, informative with the usual trainer tips spin.
Thank you so much for making this Nick! You made it so very simple to understand.
Fun Fact: Even Pokemon GO's base shiny rate is already very very high compared to the main series games, in present games, the shiny rate unboosted is 1 in 4096, while in older games, it is a whopping 1 in 8192! Shiny Pokemon are supposed to be a very rare occurrence that happens maybe one or twice in your lifetime, but since people do be liking their different colored dogs, Niantic decided to boost the shiny rate.
That’s cool 😎
It's more so because in the games you can force encounters with a specific Pokemon in a specific area. You can't do that in Pokemon Go other than community days etc. Which is why the shiny rate during a community day is so high.
This makes you feel grateful for the shinies you do have 😅
This is perfect, got mad curious about rates, so I did a deep dive online. And now you’re dropping a vid?? Awesome.
A much needed update video to all the info that has been gathered about shinies :) thank you Nick!
I have noticed your confidence has grown a lot in your recent videos! Your skills at explaining things has improved a lot! Great job 👏 Inspiration for all introvert's!
This was very helpful Nick, any chance you could talk about the stats for hundos? Thank you once again.
15/15/15 lol
Thank you for this very good explanation it was very informative I had no idea of the differences between shiny rates ! Makes so much more sense now !
I appreciate your work on making these videos. Very helpful info.
Thank you for this video Nick. People need to know this is a gamble and casinos wouldn't be a profitable business if clients won all the time. The main problem is something I've noticed since a long time ago, people's perception on how many things they catch/check is a lot higher than what they actually do. I noticed people think they check like 1000 and when they look up the actual number, they see they only encountered like half. It’s normal, perception is a bi***. Happens a lot when raiding legendaries for shinies. You may think you have raided like 50 but then you actually check and it’s only like 30. People, check carefully your numbers, analyze the shiny rate and how many hours you would have to put on average to get the shiny you want, and then evaluate if it's worth your time. My main problem with this game is that events are mostly full of old stuff and the new and interesting stuff doesn't spawn too much. Which makes it harder to get a reasonable amounts of checks in. GO fest had a ton of starters I am a bit sick of at this point. But overall I had fun during GO fest. In my opinion, it was 100 times better than GO fest 2020. I remember that one being incense locked. I hated that. What I enjoyed about 2022 was that I was able to go hard if I wanted to. If I wanted a certain shiny, I had in my power just walking faster. In 2020, I was just waiting and hoping the next incense spawn would be what I wanted to check.
I'll be perfectly honest here, when Regirock had its shiny released for Go, I think I did not get my shiny until at least 56-57 raids, I tried going for a double shortly after but failed until recently they came out with Regi's rock/ice and steel with new legacy moves, I think I got four shiny Regirock when it came back with earthquake as it's legacy move..
shiny luck is well all just depends on luck lol
This is such an important video. Thank you so much for creating this!
Awesome video! Great explanations thank you!
When he said “is that little blue dog really worth $200 to you?” I felt attacked 😅😂 I did 100 Houndoom raids & did not get a SINGLE Blue Doggo 😂 FeelsBad but never again
I have a Shiny Holiday Cape Female Glaceon. As of right now that's VERY rare! Not only was it (as of now), a raid only Shiny but it's also female! ✨❄️
Also Kangaskhan isn't full odds anymore. It has a Mega now which means it's now have boosted Shiny Odds.
Does it being a female make it special compared to not? I also got a shiny caped Glaceon but mine is male
@@searingllama5621 eevee only has a 1/8 chance of being female (so the eeveelutions do too) so its rarer to get a female shiny of eevee and its evolved forms
Awesome video!! I love the stats you shared of the percentage chance we have to get a shiny mon!
Awesome video as always..the cday examples got me though 😂😂😂
Thank you for explaining the shiny rate. It's a good refresher. I think the biggest disappointment is that we PAID to participate in GoFest and the shiny rates were so bad. My weekend was good, but so many of my friends paid to participate and got one or two or no shinys. I finally decided I'm tired of giving Niantic money for disappointing events.
It's not disappointing on their end. It's just you paid for the event wishing you'd get a lot of shinies but it's never guaranteed. I always walked away from a niantic event (3 gofest + 2 tours) with 45+ shinies, but only because I didn't catch, didn't talk to anyone, just shiny checking hundreds then thousands of mon walking fast like a madman.
That's not enjoyable. If you want to enjoy your gofest, Play with friends, catch mons you need candy or XL for, chat in the meantime, by all means do all this. But set a very realistic expectation when you buy the ticket that unless you play specifically with a shiny hunting mindset and playstyle, you would have to be very lucky to even reach 10 shinies.
@@jeremychristian5409 I get that. I have been playing mostly solo since C-19. Not by choice, but that's how it has ended up. I'm mostly just shiny checking and I do okay with most events. I don't do raids during events unless it's a special one. But am disappointed for friends who didn't do as well. I finished off GoFest with 20 shinys, all but one was new to me.
7:55
That 61% is referring to a permaboosted shinies in general right? With eggs, it will be even less because of the possibility of hatching other pokemon in the egg pool
Correct, you'd have to hatch that specific Pokémon 64 times, not just 64 eggs.
I raided 3 raids for shiny rockruff when it 1st came out and didn't get it from raids I hatched it from a 10km egg so what was the shiny rockruff hate rate vs the shinh raid rate for it? Alot of my shiny that i didnt get from raids I ended up hatching it feels sometimes hatching has a higher shiny rate of the event pokemon from its respected event egg
@@codystromsness2130 the shiny rate is per pokemom regardless of how you get it. Wild, raid, egg, research, rockruff (and any other Pokémon) will be the same chance outside of a special event.
@@codystromsness2130 I only ever hatched one shiny
Thx for the videos…enjoy the info so much!
This is great data. Thank you!
The ones I want are always too rare, and the ones that make me go 🤨😑😤 when I find them are too common
Ya, niantic's idea behind shinies really just doesnt make sense for the game they want to make. They try and make it feel like shiny hunting in the pokmon games but its not the same. There is no time limit in the games, stardust is not a required resource, and you can keep resetting the game until your legend is shiny.
they truly just infuriate large portions of their players. Good luck either way on the shinies you want!
@@DaxVerus it absolutely makes sense to make - r a r e - pokemon's shiny rare and commons common. Hello?
@@ciircuz rare i guess. But if you can only get a shiny via an in game currency that requires money to get otherwise then now its not rare its expensive.
And actually there isn't a reason to make shinies rare, that is just the mentality we've been taught since day one. Very simple market mindset :) it's only rare because they make it rare. If every pokemon was more easily shinied it wouldn't be rare anymore. Hence rarity is made up and determined.
@@DaxVerus no one would care about shinys if they were common only ridiculous people don’t transfer some comday shinys
@@mitzki1214 I would. I keep one of each shiny I've ever caught minimum. I am a collector. And nothing about that is ridiculous. Everyone is entitled to play the game as they see fit. Only ridiculous people think there is only one way to enjoy a game :)
Pokemon GO still has the best base shiny odds in all of the pokemon games. I would say Pokemon GO is pretty lenient in handing out shinies whether you think so or not. Just remember: if you have at least 20 or more shinies and complain about not having more, Niantic could have gone the more extreme route and made Pokemon GO the same odds as the core games( Base odds being 1/8192 from gen 2-5, and 1/4096 from gen 6-8 and probably 9). Of course, you were able to increase these odds, but the best way in most cases is to complete the Pokedex, and I'm certain people wouldn't spend thousands to travel in order to complete the Pokedex on a free game for the shiny rate to go from 1/4096 to 1/1365.
Dude these number crunch videos are great! Keep it up!
Thank you so much for this video! This explains a lot, like why everyone in my family has shiny Onix! I played when the game debuts but fell off as it became too hard to progress, before shinies came to the game, then started again during lockdown for my son, and my first day I caught a shiny Miltank and thought it was just a different gender like Nidoran. Took a few weeks to realize what I had caught. Knowing this helps understand the system so much better. Today’s event seemed to be very heavily favoring the shiny Shieldon over Cranidos, at least for us, but this event did not seem to have any issues like Go Fest did, we all caught a shiny in the “boosted” research rewards, in fact several of the Shieldon, one of us also got shiny Cranidos, and everyone got several Tyrunt, but only one Amaura, but it felt like a normal event.
Thanks for the video, Nick. It’s good for folks to get an understanding about rates and the true likelihood of getting a shiny. A few things I wanted to point out::
- you mention Legendarys having the highest rate. I believe you meant to say highest chance of getting shiny, which is opposite of the rate (lowest in this case). Additionally, Mythicals (in 5 Star raids) fall in this category too.
- while it is almost certainly correct that each species has its own assigned shiny rate, that doesn’t mean that rate necessarily applies to anything beyond wild catches. Take for example Shadows. Niantic certainly has an catch origin type (Shadow) that overrides the species base rate. In fact, the 9db site you reference strongly suggests that 1:500 species have a lower shiny rate in raids (1:128 or 1:256). Niantic likely had a ceiling cap setting for raids so as not to exceed a certain rate. No study exists to suggest that full 1:500 species are same in raids.
- the last point is Niantic’s RNG. Your point about some folks being really unlucky is valid, however, we really should test out their RNG to see if it’s solid and truly random. This includes testing distributions and other factors. A lot of anecdotal evidence suggests that there are just too many so-called very unlucky folks which is akin to many winning huge lotteries.
As someone that barely uses my free daily raid pass, I’ll get a legendary shiny in about 9 years.
Thanks for the quick numbers 😎👍
Very interesting and useful video, thanks!
Imagine if Niantic just disclosed the "lootbox" rates in game, there would be absolutely no question 🤓
I would consider myself as a really unlucky when it comes to raiding. I got my first shiny legendary at my 179th legendary raid. It was a groudon a few days ago. Wonder what was the chance of that happening 🤔
Hi there, math guy here. This is known as a Geometric Distribution. The odds of not getting a shiny for the first 178 and then getting it on the 179th are simply (19/20)^178 * (1/20) = 0.000005417161032 or 0.00054%
If you just wanted the odds of not getting it at all after 178 that would be (19/20)^178 = 0.011%
Have you considered that of the 179 you did not all had a shiny available ?
i got a shiny darkrai within 3 tries dureing the halloween event
@@jackfenton7320 Thanks
Astonishing to know that!
@@titi3736 Roughly 23-27 didn't
Great video, Nick! :)
very informative I'm glad someone finally did this thanks
The whole issue is that Niantic stated there would be an "increased shiny odds" for Go Fest and well it didn't feel like it. Kanto Tour and Johto Tour felt like they had better odds and they weren't a two day event. Not to mention a lot of Pokémon disappeared from incense spawns plus Grunts prevented you from checking a lot of lured spawns. Even if you battled them by the time you would check the lure spawn it would disappear.
Exactly. Niantic advertising "boosted" shiny rates. So what rate is that?
The one that was most stressful for me was shiny pikachu. I had seen a pikachu over 10k times before I finally found a shiny.
same with squirtle sun glasses lol
Just bad luck
Just discovered you on CZcams and I’ve been loving the content. Keep it up! And thanks for showing me Brandon Tan
Thank you for the shiny rate info
This was the video i really need. Thks Nick :D
Thank you for this the people out here really needed it
While I love the scenic vlogs, I love these more technical videos, too :)
I think one of the first videos I've watched on your channel was about EX-Raids and how S2 cells work.
Great and informative video. Thanks, Nick!
Oh thank god you made this video. I need to know about the shiny rates. I also just got a shiny Aron so yay!
Excelente video papu! Información muy util. Saludos desde Argentina
Great video! You had me laughing! 'Don't be like me' 😂
Nice little jab you did. Good explanation.
Thanks for the information ❤️🙏
That was a great video, thank you
Thanks for this. I hate having to explain this over and over so this will be a nice video to link people to.
Great video Nick! Also, something to note, which you remind us when this happens (thank you, by the way, it has saved me a lot of heartache), spotlight hours do not have an increased shiny rate.
TYVM for the explain, very important to traslate to my boys.
Please do more of these! :)
I really appreciate this video.
Thank you for the video Nick
Great vid
Thank you for making this video! So many people don't understand how probabilities work and get mad because they didn't get the shiny legendary "Niantic should have given to them after 20 raids"...
Could you do a similar video explaining catch odds from raids? We've all had those times when we've made 20 great or excellent throws in a row and the legendary still ran away. It would be great to understand that math a bit better! 🤓
I'm glad you went over how probability works with encounters & raids. Too many people think that 1 in x chance means 1 shiny every x raids
Great video
Thank you for this video. It is good to see someone taking the time to explain the shiny rates.
I have to remember that my Pokémon are pixelated at the end of the day, but the fear of missing out that the Niantic advertising does for these events, is too real.
If I feel I would like to spend extra money on Pokécoins for an event, I set myself a budget. My playstyle has changed a lot over the years, and I haven't felt the need to set a budget in a couple of years. Living near Pokégyms has helped a lot.
I can still feel disappointment when things don't go as expected, but I'm getting to a stage where I can handle things a bit better, and try not to get caught up in all the hype.
It's making that shiny catch a bit extra special now :)
Ok this was a good video. Thanks Nick.
The throwback clips at the start hit different
Fantastic video! Road to 1 M subscribers 🔥
Hi Nick! Ive been a long time subscriber and a fan. Is there a way you can make a video explaining Functional Hundo pokemons, like pokemon with 15/15/14 ivs that have the same stats as a perfect iv pokemon, i know it doesn’t apply to all pokemons. I’ve been searching all over CZcams about this and no one really made a video about it yet and I’m sure a lot of players that are pretty new in pogo might not even know about it and would appreciate it if you could further explain it in a video. Thanks in advance and more power to the channel.
8:52 as someone who's done 1,600 wild encounters for shiny Torchic since its Community Day without luck, I just accepted that I may never get it unless I travel to California and lucky trade for it with one of my friends.
I appreciate you taking your time to explain in detail all the statistics of the shiny rate ratios. This game is a marathon never a sprint and if anyone is stressing out so much about a shiny or more, and it's affecting them mentally then it's best to take a break from the game.
Don’t make pogo ur work !
This was an incredibly satisfying video. Thank you for the math.
Also thx for mentioning us in early time zones when they forget to turn shiny rate up or on
This video is helpful for me.
Needed this
Great video Nick per usual. I definitely am experiencing some bad luck on Rockruff, so far 124 encounters and ZERO shiny pup. 😡 thankfully most of the passes I used were the daily free raid pass and when they had double free passes. I don’t spend money on raid passes anymore. I’ll buy event tickets but that’s about it at this point. Still my favorite game ever made tho
Now this was a fun video
This puts things into perspective
well explained Nik
Really appreciated the last set of statistics where you explained the actual percent chance of getting that shiny after “x” amount of encounters.
Congrats on hitting 1 million!
Articuno, Zapdos and Moltres raid days… 4 years ago… dang, time really flies
Awesome vid Nick, I wish Niantic had the transparency to just post rates so we didn't have the need for crowdsourcing info
Shiny Rates from Raids should be minimum 1/125. Wild spawns at 1/500 should be boosted from raids.
Also... Unlock the evolved mons without a Mega release. Tytar raids should have the shiny chance of a Larvi raid
Got my shiny Mewtwo some time ago, and from that time only once I got some shiny Bulbasaur.
Awesome video❤❤❤ wow shiny is even harder to get than I thought 😂😂😂
I was lucky with unown F got a shiny one in go fest last year and I 100% agree about boosting them as it’s never around for long .
Great video. Many people are not familiar with the statistics and believe that if you’re raiding a legendary that after 20 raids chances of getting a shiny is about 100%
Great video I actually thought that in raids the odds where always higher! Now that they added the damned xl candies we have to keep raiding those 60/70 raids anyway. I hate them
FINALLY! A major tier CZcams creator explaining shiny rates and probabilities. I’ve seen too many people rage quit the game for weeks after not getting what they thought "was promised them".
Another simply excellent video. I still dont understand why, based upon your provided info that I have in some cases. 6 or more of a so called very rare wild shiny. AND OF COURSE. Other pokemon that I have literally caught thousands of ( level 50 playing since day one) and not ever seen a specific shiny. So much for RNG.
Great analysis as usual, Nick. You are such an asset to the community!
