I hope this helps some of you choose your very first speed cube as you enter the crazy and wonderful world of cubing! Of course these are my opinions only, but with prices being so low these days, it really makes sense that you get a magnetic cube. From Daily Puzzles of course. Please. Do it for the kids.

The kids that start cubing are spoiled, having this type of quality content 😼
Also my advice would be that; to just get started it doesn't really matter what cube you use (it's just to figure out the basics so a better cube won't help here) but if you don't own a cube yet, or really want to get into speed cubing, then yes the cubes Tingman recommend are awesome (although I haven't tried the thunderclap v3 yet đŸ€”)

A speed cube will allow you to turn more easily, making it easier to learn new algorithms. I know some people are just trying to solve the cube once or twice, and not aim for world records, but turning more easily means you can learn at a faster pace and will less muscle fatigue. So I disagree with you, a speed cube is better than just any old cube for learning purposes.

My tip: Don't buy an expensive cube right off the bat. I'm a fairly new cuber, but I've learned a lot in my time. My first cube was a Rubik's 2x2, and then went straight in for a Gan 356 RS. The Gan RS is about 18 or 20 USD, and, like stated in the video, it was a mistake because it's non-magnetic. Take his examples on some good budget magnetic cubes and buy one, but if you really want to go for a non-magnetic cube, buy the Little Magic. It's one of the cheapest cubes and can hold up at competitions, and because it's cheap, it won't be too overly taxing on your wallet. But seriously, just buy a cheap magnetic cube like stated in the video.

I’ve been solving the Cube since I was in high school back in 1982, (yes, I’m old 😬) however, I thought cubing had died out over the years, until I recently stumbled upon this video by Tingman telling me “It’s time I got a better cube.” This helped me discover that cubing had made an amazing resurgence that I was completely unaware of. I just wish I had found out much sooner that there was such a great cubing community out there! I have since got back into cubing (after many many years) and I owe it all to Tingman’s video. So a big THANK YOU to Tingman!

Thank you for this video. My grandson is Cuber NYC, and watching his videos reminded me of the great fun I had when I bought a cube in 1980. I worked at Boeing Airplanes, and an engineer told me about the Rubik's Cube. Another engineer published a small paper on solving the cube, otherwise I might still be trying to figure it out. Rapidly it became apparent the (original) cubes were slow, so I would take mine apart, use 600-grit paper to smooth the pieces and lube it with petroleum jelly. :p I bought a QiYi clock and have enjoyed it, and decided to get a decent cube--for fun. This video is Great! Thank you for laying it out there. BTW, I can now do the clock sub-7. I set a timer for seven minutes and can finish before the timer goes off. I hope to do the cube (I ordered a Thunderclap on your advice) in sub-10 minutes. You kids are amazing in your quickness. It's fun for this old guy to watch your videos. Thank you. Stay fast, stay healthy.

Definitely wish I had this a few years back. I would just recommend that people do some research before buying pretty much anything. Specifically for cubing, don’t stress too much over what your first speedcube will be, there’s always gonna be a chance to upgrade as hardware improves over time. Plus, cubes at lower prices now are so good anyways! Great video, thanks for making this!

I've been using a yuxin kylin v2 m that I've been reasonably happy with - honestly any cube that fits the criteria Tingman described is probably fine. I fully realize that my times (down to ~25 right now from >1 min) are dependent on my look-ahead and algorithms, and getting a more expensive cube isn't really going to help that. That said, if you think you will enjoy solving on a fancier cube and you have the money, go for it because I think the most important thing is that you're motivated to do lots of solves and practice

I wish I watched a video like when buying my first speed cube. I ended up with a Yuxin Fire which felt very odd then and pretty terrible now. My first “real” speed cube was a Gan Air, which get infinitely better then and pretty mediocre now. My first magnetic cube was a Thunderclap v3 as Tingman mentioned in the video and it felt amazing when I got it and still pretty good! My current main is a Dayan Tengyun v2, which took a while to set up but feels great now. I wish it was as quiet as the V1 though.
In summary, I can recommend the Thunderclap v3. It is a solid cube that doesn’t need any adjustment out of the box. Also, it’s not too loud, which is a huge deal to me. I’m not the fastest, but I’ve been sub 15 on the Thunderclap plenty of times, and people are able to be sub 10 with it, so it has potential. You’ll eventually outgrow it, but what you would evolve to would be something that would not be a good choice to start out with.

One tip I have for New Cubers ( I'm not very advanced, I average 18 or 19) is to please learn the most efficient ways to do algorithms. If you start doing an algorithm that is comfortable for you at the start , but is not efficient, you will be stuck with that and it's hard to change into a new habit. I still do my Uperms in the worst way possible after even 1 year. So please learn the right fingertricks
Edit: I am practicing the mu uperms with good fingertricks and i am improving a lot. Btw I average 15 to 17 seconds now, which is not much, mainly because i hadntt been cubing for some time

Been playing with a $6 dollar rubiks brand for around a year. Every time I wind up on duty for 24hrs, I grind through some new algorithms and techniques.... I'm getting to a point where I really do need something better. I just ordered a gan 356m lite, and I'm really excited to see the difference
Update: I've been playing with the gan for the last few weeks and holy crap is it a pleasure to play with. I took my old cube with me into wet and sand places so I wouldn't damage the gan.... I appreciate having a nice cube more than ever!

my top tip for new cubers is to not buy too expensive of a cube, right now the mf3rs, yuxin little magic and meilong are all really good 3x3s, and by the time you get faster and you need a better cube, cubing hardware might have improved.
edit: you could magnetize these cubes however there are cubes that are factory magnetic that are really good. like the thunderclap v3m, or if you can find it, a magnetic mf3rs2

    • @5A81L
      @5A81L Pƙed 4 lety

I still think that the Ms is ahead of the cubes you mentioned. Ms has get great review from all the cubing channel who review it and most importantly J perm. Mf3rs is very tight out of the box. Little magic is a bit slow and mielong is below average cube out of the box. Out of the box performance matter for beginners and magnitize version of them are over $15 which is the price of Wuewie M.

You need to find one that's suits YOU. I've been cubing for about 3-4 months now. I was, like most, nieve to anything else besides the original Rubik. I learned to solve the cube on it, but it was a hindrance and while I was enjoying the learning process, the hardware was depressing. I sourced two cheap speedcubes' and yes turning was better but was the cubes were unstable. Then I quickly learned about Magnets. I'll never buy another non magnetic cube, as a main contender. Anyways, a cheapish magnetic cube got me thru learning an advanced method, just like the Rubik did for the beginner method. But then I started to time myself, and noticed my turning results should be better. Time to get a main I thought. I ended up getting the Valk elite 3, and also order the little magic. The little magic was stickerless, which REALLY was new and my new preference, but the cube was so unstable. But the Valk was stickered. Sad face. Instead of dropping another 79$ on a Valk stickerless, I bought the 356M. I've had that cube for about 3-4 weeks now. It cost me 59$. It a great cube for my style I feel. Doesn't need lube either, unlike the Valk. I'm currently teaching my 7 year old daughter to solve, and as a reward for solving her first cube I'm buying her her own cube; she uses the little magic over the Valk, I've decided to buy her the Moyu WR M. I'll likely upgrade mine to an XS soon I feel. I suggest getting the best cube you can afford ASAP. Speedcubing is a giant learning experience, I've learned, and watched my daughter learn, and there's a long learning road ahead, so get the best cube you can, the earlier you can. It promotes better habits, a better learning experience and gives superior results earlier. Avoid cheap cubes; unless it's to work out if you prefer stickers or stickerless. Dont buy a 80$ stickered cube to then discover you should of opted for the stickerless version đŸ€Šâ€â™‚ïž
