I've been going on 1km plus elevation rides over 60-100 kms with a triple ring MTB and I pass all the overweight cyclists on roadies. Getting durianriders tips took me from commuting with a 20k as my long ride to collapsing on the side of the road with my shoes off cause I'm so damn tired. Thanks dr

Thanks for all the advice over the past couple of years DR. I'm now running compact with 32 on the back and a stages and I'm ripping all my PR's on the climbs here in England! We don't have anything high or long but we definitely have steep!
Last year I climbed Ventoux on a mountain bike, and Teide in Tenerife on the roadie although only had a 25 then but ran a power meter for pacing and averaged about 70 cadence overall.
I was in Gran Canaria this year when I asked the local bike shop to stick a long cage derailleur and a 32 cassette on to climb Pico Las Nieves which is around 2000m and still only managed average 85 cadence holding about 220 watts over an hour and a half! I think I'll move up to a 34 to get it into the 90's.
Unfortunately won't be able to make the TFF this year but hopefully I'll be able to do some riding in Adelaide some time soon as I have some family there. Hopefully see you on the road!

    Hi DR,
I've been watching alot of your videos and I got really inspired on cycling and now run a 50/34 on the front and 11/28 on the back. I also put a garmin to try hit at least 80 cadence but after 40 minutes I'm losing cadence cause my legs still really fatigue quick on the hills. What can I do to improve? Do I really need to get a 11/32 on the back?

Yep, wish I got compact on my bike now. I live in North QLD Australia and yes the only time I need standard gearing is when I'm drafting and racing at 40-50 km/h but harley is right, that's only ever a couple times a month. So I really do struggle on the hills due to not being able to get my cadence up.

Durian! Ive been doing high cadence (90-100 average) for a while and i find it alright. However at yesterdays race a few people mentioned to me that i spin too much. I normally do crits and road races that usually don't have many hills. Do you still recommend high cadence for flat courses or keep it up at around 100? Ill experiment myself and see if i get any improvements (speed and power wise) but would like your advice :) Thanks

***** Look at the worlds fastest sprinters. Look at the track pursuit and kilo riders. Your mates are old school mentality before STI was invented and you had to grind around cos shifting gears to hold cadence was a pain in the ass/dangerous.

90rpm on the flat it good, shows you have a strong core, not bouncing on the saddle. When I do time trials my average cadence is between 90 and 100.

I just grabbed a 105 group w/out brakes with 50/34 11/28. Gonna be my first time with higher end Shimano. In my 3rd season. Grown to love the sport pretty fast..Also started wrenching my own bikes a year ago and love that just as much. Fucking tools can get expensive lol. Collecting little by little..kinda collect them in a as need basis after the obvious.
Road a 7speed cog with compact double since i started. 11 cogs is gonna be sweet.
Recently purchased a frame/fork and building it up. Much better imo than just buying a complete. I never like the seats and bars etc that completes come with.
It's hard to find a good bike shop..which is the main reason i starting doing my own work and I'm glad. Cycling is awesome.
    End of rant haha

It's the truth if your climbing or even for windy conditions compact is just much more versatile. Lets face it all riders that even watch cycling videos are serious cyclists. Serious cyclists all pursue climbing, Hence should all have compact. People that say there to strong and would spin it out are talking out there ass. have ridden compact and it changes the way you ride, No more grinding. I run standard on my bike as it's stock but investing in compact ASAP

Hey Harley. Always enjoy your videos.
I too have become more and more curious about Froome's gearing - shame nobody knows for sure but he seems to def spin faster enough that others that i would think he is on maybe a 34 or 36 on the back. I guess the manufacturer sponsors selling 'road' groupsets don't want the fact published.

I've gone back to riding my Cannondale Rush MTB as it has the 44 triple with a 11-34 cluster. I find the 44 -11 ideal when on the flats riding to work as the roads in some sections is a bit rough for the road bike. This is when I bog down and have keep changing gears. Over the same distance the road bike is only 90seconds quicker.

Yes, with an erect durian you'll not only allow for smoother cadence and pedaling efficiency, due to minimized groinal friction, but you'll also gain a significant aerodynamic advantage, chopping off approximately 0.04 milliseconds over 1100 kilometers. Sadly, the UCI has already banned this clever technique as a multifaceted performance enhancing drug.
