Compacts are great. As you get older you will appreciate it even more. 53/39 is for flat landers.
the reason the pros ride 53's is because you get a more efficient chain line
these are my favorite type of videos from DR..lol talking about cadence and compact cranks
Fourteen teeth minimum is the best because it's inefficient with smaller cogs unless you can put out very high power. In the old days they had 14-28. I think that's what should be still standard now.
"compact cranks make you wear"
*proceeds to retrofit 40t rear sprocket*
There has been a few occasions when I've got up to 40 MPH by myself in 50/11 on a -1% grade, that was giving it full gas just for a few minutes. I do also climb 1-2% gradients using my big chain ring quite often as being in the small chain ring makes me spin too much. I guess my muscles are used to that from my teenaged BMX days where I had 44/16 gearing, riding in the dirt & sand
I used to race with a 50 tooth. Was a nice big ring.
clear message. I wish everybody isn't a pro would memorise this.
52/36 with an 11-32 is where it's at
no man 50/34 11-32 is where is at
that will ruin your chain bro
52/36 and 11-30
DR what's the best alloy giant bike in your opinion?
Hi guys i'm new ta cycling. Jus got myself a specilised comp with a 52/36 chainset. Is this the right chainset 4 a beginner? I also live we theres alot of hills
I have spun out my 50x12 many times in downhills and I was definitely going as fast as I wanted to be going. I cannot spin my 52x11 because by the time I start reaching those speeds I don't have the power and am already shitting my pants - and I LIKE speed.
DR you reckon I can get a 11-32t on my TCR advanced with 52/36 in the front with the stock short cage? I want to replace my 11-28t but don't want to pay the big money for the compact Ultegra in the front.
Wish I waited for 2017 to buy the Neon Red TCR KOM edition... SO sick and perfectly geared.
Veevee Archer Nah I'd say it makes 100% perfect logical and practical sense, from my own experience. Even in the hottest flat paceline no one is coming close to touching their 50x11
I can spin out a 53-11 on the flat........ as long as I'm on a turbo trainer with no resistance.
Thoughts on the Raleigh Merit 2?
great channel. hope someone can help me. I have a 50/34 with 12/25 cassette. I'm looking at a bike that has a 46/30 with 11/32 cassette. I know I will gain climbing gears. but will I lose top speed?
Most likely not. At 130 cadence at 46/11 you'll theoretically be hitting around 70km/h. So nah.
A semi compact 52/36 gives me a nice chain line i ride in flat terrain
Can u do a video on Qrings
Get a triple and a 34x11 cassette and enjoy cycling.
Because It has a my power meter which I bought new for 50% off!😁
Hi, i Wanna change my chain rings, I'm using 52-36 to 50-34 shimano, can i use a sora chain ring on a Tiagra crank? Does it work? Thanks!
9 spd rings 'should' work on 10spd...
I’m 4ft 11 bike my bike came with 50/11 I’d have to fall off a cliff to spin it out it’s ridiculous thanks for the heads up shag
I'm a beginner, completely out of shape and bought my first road bike, the best my money can buy, puts me in a 50/11 as the biggest gear. I spin this relation very rarely and every time I see the death in front of me, my legs scream and the speed is crazy. Until now I was thinking I was just a weak pussy.
Why don't Shimano make cassettes with 13 or 14T as the smallest sprocket like they used to? Everything is 11 or maybe 12T. A 32-13/14T would give a more even spread compared to a 32-11T. Most riders, especially beginners (unless they are Hulks) will not be riding the 11 or even 12T sprocket for much time at all! Looking at people's cassettes I have notices that the cassette is a little bit black and dirty but the 12 and 11 sprockets are still silver. That says it all, they are spending much time in them at all.
Oh, I didn't know this. I will try to find it. Thanks.
I recently found out that Shimano offers 46-36 Ultegra which I'm definitely going to try. A bit harder to find though...
Ivan Ivanov how's anything g hard to find on the internet
put a 55-tooth chain ring if you need to descend like bob jungels in the stage 1 of the 2016 tour of oman !!
What if you can put out 1800-2000 watts and there is a tailwind into the sprint?
yea but you wont cuz most tdf sprinter can only manage around 1100-1200 watt in a 12 second sprint peak at most around 1600 those are flash peak quite irelevent even the best can only manage a couple more watts in those kind of group level that why they win if you can average those kind of watt then yeah you need a bigger ring but at that point you would have made lance Armstrong or frome look like a child trying to learn how to ride on a bicycle with training wheels you dont need anything bigger on the flat only for downhill where you go over 60kph quite easily but i dont know about you going more then 60 kph 25mm road bike is sketchy as fuck
In that case you are a pro level track sprinter and ride massive gears anyways.
if you ain't spinnin, you ain't winnin! spinnin +hot sauce = pro as fuck!!
The only time I use a 50 tooth or 52 tooth chainrings aka compact gearing is if I’m running wheels smaller than a 700c rim for an extra top end gear so I’m not spinning out in long decent races if my 700c road bike or 29mtb bike is out of action I prefer a 48 tooth chainring on my 650b atb bike for flat terrain cycling only con is it spins out too quickly in downhills but not to a major con as I’m running profile hubs on my 650b atb bike as it maintains speed well with that hub and of course the slick tires for long cycling distances that dosent involve long descents in any 650b bike. I would recommend a 48tooth chainring as it gives a extra top end gear on the flats compared to a 42tooth or lower and it gives you great speeds if your doing very long descents 52 tooth is also my go to if I’m doing bike tours for 2 or 3days on my 650b atb bike. if you have a old bike that’s a 26 inch or a 650b and can’t afford a 29er or 700c bike to go faster for longer I would recommend going up in chain ring size to get extra top end speed for the smaller diameter rim especially for the flats the 48 tooth touring chainring has breathed new life on my 650b mtb bike it defo feels like a 29er hybrid with a 46tooth chainring interms of speeds try it out and play around with bigger chainring sizes on a smaller diameter rim than a 700c and you will notice the difference interms of top end speed you will travel hilariously fast especially with slick tires on
I wouldn't mind a 48-32 to go with my 11-36 cassette.
Praxis crank fits your need, www.bikerumor.com/2016/09/08/eb16-praxis-works-introduces-micro-compact-4830t-road-crank-direct-mount-cx-rings-new-chain-guides/
Thank you!?
I live in Miami FL and spent 2 years on my first road bike with a compact crank + 11-32 cassette man was that a mistake.. so glad I switched to a standard crank and 11-23 cassette. Honestly though if u typically climb I would just get a semi compact ( unless ur doing some crazy steep stuff) and get some of both worlds.
I live in the mountains and generally ride a compact. Just put a gravel bike together with a 30/46 subcompact crankset. So far I love it
yes
So why did you recommend it for new bike riders in the past? I remember you telling us in your "bicycle buying for noobs" video to get 50in the big and 34 in the small ring. And at least a 28 in the back.
trolling mate. COMPACT ARE THE BEST!!
I think the point is that you can walk into a shop and buy bikes "off the rack" with a 50-34 or something like a 53-39, he's saying definitely don't go for the 53-39. Choose the compact
@@VeeVeeArcher stfu your a hater and probably fat fuck, Durianrider has helped me a lot about cycling.
What your running on the flats durianrider?
Where's the 3 reasons compact cranks make you weaker??? Did I miss something????
Only time I've ever actually spun out my 50x11 was this yr drafting behind a truck on the flat at 78kph at 135rpms!! :D Apart from that never need it as our hills aren't long and straight enough so seldom get over 80kph. Once I'm up to 65kph+ I just get in an aero tuck. In a solo sprint with a top speed of 52kph fresh no tailwind (yes I suck at sprinting!) I never ever get in my 50x11 as I stall and can't accelerate it. A 50x15 is all I need in a sprint.
swites 😂yeah right. You suck.... at bs’ing about how fast u ride the flats 😂 too funny
@@Slammo66 Drafting behind a big truck at 78kph is not hard! Any half decent average cyclist could do that. Just found my strava file: 77.8kph at 135rpms. I averaged 72.4kph for 55seconds before giving up. Really good cyclists on youtube have got well over 100kph drafting behind trucks. Just the other week this guy on youtube I follow drafted behind just a small car at over 80kph. You sound like a complete douche who hasn't got a clue😂
I prefer 52-36 with 11-34 as it gives such a great range of ratios. Also some people don’t like to spin that much but prefer to grind so definitely not one size fits all. Glad for that taller gearing for the Big descents like 3 peakes 80-90klm. Additionally lower cadence and corners at higher speeds go better imho . Good topic 👍
Pedalling thru corners at high speeds and not in the TDF.... you are risking it so much for what reason?? 😆😆❤
@@DurianriderCyclingTipsJesus! u remember what fun is right? Spose u will be heading down the beach to tell the surfers to avoid the big waves and then to the snowys to tell all the skiers to stick to the gentle slopes! Ditch the cycling channel mate, ur in the wrong game!
wait what ?
you said in other vida that compact groups was the best option to the 99% of the people
they are. click bait title only mate.
+Durianrider Cycling Tips ohhh
my bad, i only watched the very first seconds bc i was doing a night xc ride, lately i started road ciclying , got a fuji with a compact set, and im in love with it. it really makes me feel like im saving energy the most of the time with a 50t-12.
greetings from colombia mate!
No need for anything other than a compact crank. Also there's no need for Mountain bike cranks unless your on a mountain bike.
I hate compact cranks I kept spinning out like crazy
and grinding up every hill getting dropped?
yeah if 80 rpm is spinning it out
upshift mate, lol
Blake Johnson
Try to click shift lever on your brifters next time. It will cause shifting
I have a 50t chainring with a 11t rear sprocket and I find it hard to keep up with the cadence when I get over 60 kph on flat. I guess not everybody is made for high revving, some people are better as a diesel engine.
i think of my self as a pretty good rider if you bike over 60kph average on the flat your a tdf world class level rider are you riding an ebike im riding a felt ar1 with durace di2 zipp 404 and cycleceramic pulley and bb ballbearing with aero cycling kit on putting out 300watts on average at most i can do is 35-40 kph on the flat with calm winds lower speed in worst weather at that on my good days
Where the hell did you read I was AVERAGING 60 kph on flats? I don't average this speed but I very often reach it for 30-60 seconds on a sprint or on an attack and yes, my legs cannot keep up with the high cadence at this sort of speed.
When you get over 60 kph on flats? 😂. When the car is puking you!
so why the pros still using standard?
He told it in the video several times
if you dont go below 16 km/h in a race, you can run standard cranks + pros have to sometimes also attack on a downhill where you need every big gear you have got
Because there drive terrain sponsores still want pros to promote standards. Why? I still not quite sure on that.
I guess that's a question for Shimano, Seram, & Campegnolo, to answer.. or just watch more of Durrian Riders' videos on cadence gearing. My guess, in my personal opinion, about the sponsores is, maybe they either do or think they will make more of a proffit selling more standards rather than compact cranks, as they should be selling!
2:47 hilariuous! :)
Hook me up then i run 53/ 11 on flats for some time also i draft semi trucks up to 50 mph then out of gears soooo
I have just recently got into riding again, I rode a lot when I was like 10 with my dad but I am now 18 and have lost a lot of knowledge and was wondering what Im doing wrong here- I ride a 50/34 because I was buying on a budget and everytime I hit steep hills I find that the only way to get up them is by hitting 1st gear and just very slowly working my way up which always fatigues me a lot, is this due to me running a 50/34, or my level of fitness? Also I cant tell you my what cadence or wattage is because I dont have a power meter but im always trying to spin as much as possible but its hard when im hitting steep hills in 1st, it feels like im going no where at times and I think im not being sufficient with my energy
I've been on steep inclines like that and you feel like you're going nowhere fast or that you'd be faster if you got off and walked up the hill :) Stick with it and the hills get easier.
techinically every ride, I get to 70 km/h
This video has no correlation to the title if you were wondering
I find it bizarre that a lot of amateur dudes who complain about spinning out with compacts are piss weak climbers!
don't get me wrong I do like compact cranks and recommend them but not for criteriums
Is this video a repeat?
Hook me up with a contract.
I want a 52x9 hahahaha fuck it
I run 53 x 11 on my carbon fixed gear bike.
I'M JUST KIDDING!!!
i want a fucking 46/32 in sram red. even well bike manufacturers stop being shit?
FSA's new 46/30 is going directly on my bike day one when it's out:
www.bikeradar.com/us/news/article/fsa-launches-2017-bike-components-modular-cranksets-stems-dropper-post-and-more-46541/
take it easy can you run stages with that shit?
Most likely an FSA energy crankarm. It's the same as their older omega cranks, just in smaller gearing. Check out what people have used for a stages replacement.
take it easy Ideally I'd like sram to pull their finger out as I don't want a FSA crank, have to use a power tap power meter, have sram red shifters but a shimano cassette etc etc.... why can't one manufacturer just make a line of components which offers good gear ratios? It's insane.
Compact is superior unless you're in a downhill no climb race with super tuck banned
👍
Misleaded title
TREK only puts compact cranks on their bikes. Including their $10K race bikes.
Not now, just bought one, all semi compact now
For racing with an average of 25 mph or more I find that 53-39 is a good way to go.
For training however 50-34 or even lower seems more like the right choice.
Or just go for a junior cassette in the back to lower the gear. Much easier to swap between racedays and recovery days.
ya durianrider I run a compact, I don't race and hit 60mph coming down Baldy mountain in L.A. county California. Burn plenty of carbs with the 50/34 and have a great time.
Show us your Strava link to the ride or it didn't happen.
@Jesse A. Jesse Asshat
his title is compct cranks make you weaker but in the vid he says we should all use them?? im fucking confused man whts good here
I wish I could give this two thumbs down.

i have a 55 and damn i can reach 80kph easy. not afraid to die bro
Proud woman who doesn’t seen suck wheel 53/39/11 diablo !!! Woohoo
