I remember being very young. My dad got me Doom II. I had never played original so 2 was my first doom experience. It had just dropped. We sat hunched over that computer screen together for what seemed like an eternity and were BLOWN away by the first level. The noises, the base design, etc. the demon growls!!! My mom walked in mid second level and made dad take it away 😅 she did not have an appreciation for the chainsaw! I remember finding where the disc was hidden not too long after and I had to complete the game in secret! Thanks for the memories John!
in 80 years from now, few people will talk about John Carmack, but Romero... will remain forever as one of the most influential game designers of early era video games
@@ruslansmirnov9006 and people will still playing doom mods. It will become some kind of traditional thing. And Modders learn how to make a map from romero's maps.
as a Doom community level designer myself, it really is a treat to be able to watch your design process live. My own style is so extremely influenced by your maps (particularly MAP11 and E1M7), and it seems that your process is much like my own: iteration, iteration, iteration. Map and play, keep playing, keep honing, until it feels awesome. Honestly, to this day, your level design principles still hold true and are baked into every decision I make about my own levels. Looking forward to being able to check out these levels when Sigil 2 is out!
I just beat every episode on Ultra Violence, starting up another playthrough of Doom 2, not sure if i've ever actually finished it. This is so cool to see
This is extremely exciting to watch you render a map out of the ether, John. Bloody marvellous, mate! Really looking forward to this episode landing. :D
These streams are such a cool peek behind the curtain! So interesting to see your design process and very helpful for those looking to learn. You use so many jagged edges which is something try to avoid, but it looks really good. Excited to play the new episode when it's done. Thank you for the uploads!
Lets all just take a moment to recognize the John Romero is an absolute legend in the video game industry. The way that you helped form iD software and revolutionize the gaming industry with countless classics. I mean iD software put out Wolfenstein, Doom, and Quake. It's hard for gaming companies to even put out 1 great game and yet they did it back, to back, to back. EVERYTHING that we have today, We have them to thank for leading the way. And not only that but these games still bring joy to many people. And even after all these years you are still putting in work on them. That is what legends are made of. Thank you John Romero.
Ey cool, the algorithm blessed me, didnt know you also had a channel where u do regular uploads. Really dope to see that Dario and Sandy for example are also doing vids and giving insight into their involvement with doom!
ty for sharing your design process! MyHouse.WAD and SIGIL got me back into wanting to make maps again. watching you play was a treat and watching you design is so fun. started playing doom 2 when i was 3 years old. havent really stopped for 30 years. 🤣Thank you and the ID team for giving the world your creations
if these are the times i am afraid will gonna take a long time for you to play it.. if i remember well he said he want to released it on December 2023 for the exactly 30th years anniversary, but i am afraid or he will postpone or rush it
You're an inspiration dude. I'm not a dev but instead work as the music/sound design guy. The devs on our team always astound me with their technical know-how and have got me out of some pretty gnarly jams when integrating audio into our game. It's great to see you've retained that passion for game development from all those years ago, looking forward to the release!🤘
I just finished UV maxing Sigil from pistol start last night and I'm already jonesing for more Sigil content. Can't wait to experience the next episode!
Commander Keen is my first memory of video games. And Doom must be one of my first 3D games! I was less than 4 years old at the time. Thank you Mr. Romero for creating these games! If one of these days I find the time, I would like to create maps for doom. 🙂
Really interesting to see him work. he makes it look so easy. Interesting to see him build and tweak stuff on the fly. Usually people get told to block out an entire level before starting to mess with textures and small details.
In all seriousness, I didn’t know a sequel was in the works for Sigil. I was so excited for the release of the original, and it was a great inspiration to my own mapping when it came out. Really cool to see “new” features/effects by cleverly repurposing things from the original game logic and assets. I can’t wait to see what twisted, mind-bending designs the genius behind Doom will serve up for Sigil 2!
I remember when Sigil 2 was announced (my memory tells me sometime around Feb 2021 but I could be way out) and I was like "Woah Sigil is getting a sequel!". Since then I thought the project went dark until recently I read it was slated for December release this year. I loved the pacing & fresh ost in the first one so I'm really looking forward to this one since I've rinsed DOOM Eternal so much I can't bring myself to replay any other DOOM, having played them so many times too. This'll be a refreshing experience.
I happen to have the first three Doom games on my Steam account, it's cool going back and playing the first two games, Doom I and Doom II and re-experiencing what made them great in the first place, the old Doom games have a certain something that the newer Doom games have lost in the process.
"To beat the game you must defeat me, John Romero." Glad to say I have been dooming since doom 1 was in beta long ago. Glad to see a legend keeping a legendary game alive from back in the day.
Reading your latest book before I go to sleep every day, hard cover. Hard to put it down. You're my hero and inspiration, and sure as I'm very known Wolfenstein 3D modder (my team made best and most advanced mods for the game) and a Doom modder. Did you like my tribute to you in "Blade of Agony"? "Modern Romero"'s head? Made it with love :)
It's amazing to see true craftsmanship in progress. I'm surprised to hear that Sigil 2 isn't based on Doom 2 though. After all, Doom 2 turns 30 next year. But who knows, maybe one day we will see a similar project based on Doom 2 ;)
yeah I know, I have all these plans in my head for all these great maps, and then they all end up looking like boxes connected to boxes. I'm a good programmer but an absolutely terrible artist so unfortunately I think there's only enough room in the brain for one of those skills and good artwork and good map design, well it just ain't in my genetics :-(
Romero makes it look effortless. Is he going with the flow or does he have a general idea of what he wants his maps to be? Every time I open DB to try my hand at creating a map I get bored rather quickly, unless I preplan things, but that doesn't always fall through.
Did that hit Florida too? I got a friend in Tallahassee that said his power went out, he's also a big DOOM fan, it sucks he's missing out on a good live stream right now
Are you planning of doing something similar to SIGIL but with Doom 2? Don't you feel too constrained with limited number of enemy types in Doom 1 compared to Doom 2?
I remember being very young. My dad got me Doom II. I had never played original so 2 was my first doom experience. It had just dropped.
