Sad to say, but true. Overall, in terms of cultural and social attitudes, Australia is about 20 to 30 years behind countries like the US and UK. On aspects like racism, Australia is stuck in a bit of a 'time-warp'. I speak from personal experience, having lived long years in both Australia and the UK. Having said this though, it is important to recognize that the 'racists' are a minority, and the large majority of Australians are decent and friendly.

I had an instance in Canada where I was a student went to check the apartment. They showed us an apartment and while coming down in an elevator they firstly asked us if we were a student or not so they have a reason to deny our application but the real reason came where the dude asked if we are Canadian or not ? Obviously we were not but at the end they were trying to twist the point and hoping that we leave without asking for a reason but I knew what they were trying to say so I asked if they can give an apartment or not and they said NO because we were students (which wasn't a real reason). Considering the fact about our employment which is all 3 of us were already working in our field of study with high pay rate, there was no reason for us to be denied just because of our financial situation. Luckily, I got what they were trying to say and never hoped to hear back from them, we managed to not being homeless.

I lived in Melbourne for 16 years, but I grew up in New Zealand. The only reason I never faced racism is because I don't look Bengali. I am pretty fair for a Bengali. When someone asks where I'm from I still mention Bangladesh. It doesn't matter that I never grew up in Bangladesh, if you're of colour, people still wanna know what you are by blood, not by land. The logical answer is your motherland, unless you're of mixed ethnicity. I act confused when I ask a Chinese where they're from and they say they're Australian when they're not, they're still Chinese. I asked one of my ex-colleagues where she's from and she said Malaysia when she's from Tamil Nadu, she even looks like she's from there because both her parents are South Indian. It doesn't matter what your passport says, you're still an Indian by blood. It just confuses people when you refer to the land. Where you're born doesn't change your blood. Aussies are still British by blood.
I only face racism online when I try to defend Muslims who get bullied, or else people can never tell that I am one as I don't wear a hijab. Bengalis don't really wear hijabs, but whites assume every Muslim do. Maybe because I have an Aussie accent I never got bullied, nobody ever questioned my faith. Then I realized, I am living in a country where faith doesn't really matter. Most Aussies are atheists, and they expect you to not have a belief system. I didn't wanna live in a place where people lack faith in God, because I believe there is a God that helped me through my struggle. I may not pray 5 times, but I am still a believer. I don't think I need to pray 5 times to prove to anyone that I'm a Muslim. Even narcissists pray 5 times wearing a hijab, but they're still narcissists. Hijab doesn't represent Islam, it's just a cultural outfit for Arabs. Narcissists are everywhere, they are in every race, culture and religion. No religion in my opinion teaches anything bad, but to live in a country where nobody has faith affects you greatly in the long run. Nobody helps you during your difficult times. When people realize this, they leave Australia. A psychotic Aussie bloke even bashed a heavily pregnant Muslim woman in Sydney, and that really scared me. Atheists lack humanity, not just faith. There are drug addicts everywhere in Australia who begs around for money, and they get violent when you don't give them change. Mental illness is a major factor in Australia, all because they have no belief system. Hindus at least have their own belief system, so does Christians, but not Atheists. After spending 23 years overseas I have learned that there is no place better than your own homeland where nobody can be racist 💯

There are many educated Australians who are humanists, and believe in treating others, as they wish to be treated themselves. I'm one of them. A modern, secular society, is preferable to one based on any religion, which is based on mythology and often misogyny.

formal suits arent appropriate attire for the most popular nightclubs in melbourne. its very hard for people they dont know to get in whatever race. unless your group of hot chicks.
those arent the slurs that australians say about indians.
i dont know for sure but in the third case in this super hot rental market, it sounds like someone just offered more money for the property before you signed the contract. it happens, its not ment too but people are greedy. you act like all the property is owned by white australians. the largest landlord in my area is an old Sikh bloke he cant be the only one across melbourne.
even in what the 2008-2009 trouble, seemed to me to be young rich indian kids. who on their first time out of their mothers loving gaze. moved to the roughest and toughest part of melbourne because it was cheap. then had to find out the hard way why it was so cheap, because that was where all the criminals lived. just think of moving to the worst suburb of any city in any country and not have any trouble with the locals

Actually you are wrong. I can say with certainty that the North Indians with 'lighter skin' face much more racism in Europe and the US than the darker-skinned South Indians. The reason for this is simple. Exactly as you have said, the lighter-skinned North Indians are difficult to distinguish from Pakistanis or even Middle-Easterners, and therefore are often mistaken as Muslims. Sadly, there is still a lot of ill-will in the Europe and the US towards Muslims, due to the perception of terrorism, etc. By contrast, the dark-skinned South Indians are distinctly 'Indian', and nobody thinks they could be from Pakistan or the Middle-East. As a result, typically, they face much less racism in Europe and the US.
This is particularly true for Europe and the US, but probably less so Australia who have not been at the receiving end of terrorist violence to the extent that Europe and the US have been.
By the way, I speak from personal experience - with innumerable friends from both the North and South of India. I am an old man now, but have lived in the 'West' for many decades now - including in the US, the UK, and Australia (I now live in the UK).

Not many property owners want to risk losing value on a house with the smell that most Indian/Pakistani/Bangladeshi/Afghani people leave in the carpets, wallpaper and anything else that absorbs the smell of burning spices.
I was married to a Pakistani woman and when we moved out of our first property, we lost the bond (several thousand dollars).
All the problems we left were HER FAULT. Spills on the carpet, burning all kinds of stuff in the pot to make food, cockroaches everywhere. Even now, when my son comes home from visiting his mother, we have to check his luggage for cockroaches. (There are no cockroaches where I live, it’s too cold for them).
She was filthy to live with and her city was the filthiest place I have ever visited (Karachi). She had never done housework in her life (she grew up with servants).

you need to assimilate more...... learn about the new ways in Australia , embrace those ways and ditch the old ways.
Strangely, it's the old ways that made the country what it was, ways that made it attractive for people to call it home.
Now, we all need to change to the ways of the newcomers - we need to change our ways to take up their ways!
But, I cannot buy matches and kero .......... I'll move to Europe instead!
      ASSIMILATE

Your conclusion that "99.5% of Aussies are not racist" is correct. Basically Aussies don`t give a stuff where you come from. It is what`s inside that counts. As to the denial of a rental property; the reason is because it is a fact that often Indians (like Chinese) will pack a place with as many bunk beds as they can fit!
People I know have moved out due to that happening. BTW, I lived with Indians for 2 years & we all enjoyed each others company including good natured "winding up". Indians to me seem more inclined to enjoy humour than other Asian type people. They are gigglers & tend toward cheerfulness.
