I will say that despite anything, I do appreciate how Lucien and Feyre aren't romantic love interests in the slightest. Pure platonic friendship. Most YA books don't really do that. Either all the boys would totally bang and love the female lead or the side men are in a relationship already or gay. So it was nice to read Lucien (Single, straight, and attractive male) and Feyre (Our female lead) just be broing around at the speed of sound ♥

One of my biggest gripes with this series is that it's to faerie lore what Twilight is to vampire lore. The traditional faerie mythos is so interesting and complex (a way better use of it is in Holly Black's Folk of the Air series), and since the world map is just slapped on top of the UK I expected a ton of Gaelic and Celtic folklore, but this book is just "they're really hot and have pointy ears and they're very very mean 😔"
Edit: Didn't expect this to blow up but I'd also recommend the 13 Treasures trilogy, it is for a younger audience (10-14ish) but the lore in those books is extensive and surprisingly intense

Wholeheartedly agree. It has some interesting plot points but since they don’t ever get properly developed, it leaves a lot to be desired. I know, right? That’s what I was thinking. I think the story would’ve been much more compelling if it was about an older sibling looking for their younger brother, sister, or a friend who had been lured away and stolen by fairies. Then they could add in the fact she’s the sole earner in the family but is also the only person who can go looking for their loved one, so she tries to make her search successful but as short as possible. Then maybe when she finds the person they’re actually happy where they are. They could have her fall in love with anyone on the road, even someone who lives just outside the fairy realm. But please no hot, sexualised fairies.

I mean yes, I’d expect a captor to be abusive, but doesn’t he not act even remotely like that in the first book? Phrasing these as questions because I’ve not read ACOTAR and don’t particularly want to 😂 So hey Amanda’s got a good excuse for not picking up on that if it wasn’t even there to find

      @valvalval22 Před rokem +76

@@petloverspy I mean, I've read them I however horrified I was from his behavior, I didn't found it shoking. The abuse came from neglect, not direct agression. He ignored what they were all going through in an attempt to forget and "help" Feyra rest and recover from what she experienced. The problem was, in doing so he also started ignoring her, her questions, opinions and most pf all, her needs. The biggest example I could think of this particular attitude is shown at the beggining of the second book. Feyra wakes up from a nightmare, has a short of panik attac and ends up puking in the bathroom. Thurought all of this (and we are told it happens almost every night) Tamlin doesnt move from his bed. He doesnt try to calm her, console her or ever hold her as she pukes. That is neglect.
And however rough se mayor find it, it matches his behavior of evasion.
The other side of thinks comes in the shape of loss of control due to a rage that was out of proportion with the situation. With Feyra begging (pretty bad that she has to come to a begging point with his lover, bit then again, in her eyes, and in Tamlins eyes, they two were never trully equals) him to cool down on the sequrity, on the number of guards that follow her and the fack that her every move is traced and monitored ( and therefore, allowed by him). He explodes. In rage. Absurd, and a way to change her mind from the topic, because he has no real tesón to be this protetictive, (he insist that all is right, yet has all this securitty on her).
Big point here, that rage would have resulted in Feyra being injured (he destroyed the whole room they were in), has she not being able to shield herself with magic.
      First instance of "direct" abuse.
And the the big one comes when she lokes her into the house. Phisically traps her, wereas everyone el se can still come and go as they please. This was done because Feyra was (again) begging him to take her with him, to fight, to help, to do something, because so far Tamlin has triwd to keep her as a throphy.
And because of the events Under the mountain, Feyra developed a fear of closed spaced and captivitty.
So, overall pretty shitti behavior, and yet, I don't personally think it was such a draatic change, considering we never acctually get to know a person (say Tamlin) until you've seen them at their lowes, as well as their highest

@@valvalval22 but Tamlin also suffered from trauma yet it gets ignored and he is turned into the bad guy. Everything you said for example doesn’t happen until the second book so, it doesn’t explain his character assassination. My theory, and some people would call it fact is that the author wanted freya and rhysand to become canon and was afraid of the backlash if Freya simply dumped Tamlin and moved on to someone else. Personally I think that could have been handled differently, Tamlin and Freya break up because they find that they have to much to deal with that they aren’t in a mental space to be in a relationship. Idk

It'll be fun to watch your video when you get there to see if your opinion is what I anticipate. Personally, I love the over-the-top drama in Sarah J. Maas books. You have to be in the right mood for it, because if you think about it, like at all, it feels ludicrous and cartoony (I often joke with my friend who also reads her books that we could try making a drinking game of taking a shot after each more-tragic-than-the-last backstory is revealed, but we'd die of alcohol poisoning), but if you just go with it and get into it, it makes all the drama feel just epically huge. ACOTAR was one where when i read it I was really underwhelmed and only picked up the sequel cause GoodReads said it was decent. Tamlin is absolutely worse lol. Rhys groped her and objectified her when their literal lives depended on him acting like a gross sexist. He kept info about her pregnancy from her when it could have literally killed her from stress if she knew. Every time Rhys does something morally ambiguous or slightly unfair to Feyre there are outside extenuating circumstances or an understandable grey area. Every time Tamlin did something to her it was because he genuinely saw her as a stupid human pet who should be happy to just exist for him and be a pretty bride and a good obedient wife.Tam thinks she's head empty no thoughts, Rhys thinks she's a grown adult women who can deal with her own shit. Tamlin fully believes his toxic instincts and wishes are just the way things should be just because, Rhysand on the other hand never goes behind Feyre's back unless he has a damn good reason and genuinely encourages her to be her own person. He also encourages her to literally help govern the country. When would Tamlin ever?
Key factor being Tamlin uses outside hreats as justifications to keep her locked up forever. Rhys uses outside threats as justifications to keep things from her sometimes but never intends to keep her in the dark permanently, to make her a prisoner, etc. Crazy thing is fans complained that she character assassinated Tamlin by turning him abusive so she tried to show that Rhys has flaws too and now the narrative is "Rhys is just as bad!" even though his selfish actions are more tame and come with added justifications attached lol.

This series was recommended, and I actually found myself wanting to get to the next and then the next book because I really enjoyed the world-building (2nd book forward, things get really interesting). Even with some of the tropes and the prickly protagonist, I found myself truly enamored with other characters and their stories. And, though I had low expectations for any seks scenes (I generally skip them or leave the room, having become used to the inability of most authors to write intimacy as if they've ever actually experienced it). I had the same feelings about Feyre from the first book, but you honestly see more of her as a character while exploring how fighting under the mountain impacted her. You also definetly get more of Rhys and learn his motivations a lot more, and yes they definetly do get hornier

Once again you've braved the front line so the rest of us don't have to! Thank you! I will never read these books, but your summaries are amazing. Also, I feel like someone needs to start a petition for you to do dramatic readings of bad, censored smut ;) They're always some of my favourite bits and I almost spat my coffee everywhere during this one.

I read this series because of another CZcamsr. Decided to see why they felt the way they felt. I’m in love with the series because it does let me turn my brain off. It has pretty dresses, crowns, and war. And that’s the reason why I love it.

[SPOILERS]honestly, i was genuinely (not sarcastically) into the series until the first book in the following series where bestie Rhys LITERALLY COMMITS REPRODUCTIVE ABUSE. yeah absolutely not, go off with all the kids bop smut, but that one book ruined the series for me.

I couldn't stand Feyre in the first book. I only got through it because I was interested in the world around her. It took me almost a year to get through because I kept stopping to read other books.
But I like her way more not that I'm in the 3rd book. I read all of the second book and most of the 3rd book within a couple months.

I struggled with this book. I struggled with the MC, and I thought Tamlin was incredibly boring. I got to the spring ritual part where Tamlin was talking up the MC and I think I just said "this is so dumb" out loud and put the book down for good. I always felt like I was the odd one out when reading the reviews (absolutely no hate to people who enjoyed the book). Seeing you have the same reactions as me has made me feel so validated😂 plus I'm genuinely curious to hear what the general story is, so thanks!

The series has a whole has such a weird evolution. I was here for it when I was reading the books as they came out and I'm here for it now. I don't always need to read something that makes me think on a deep and philosophical level. There's nothing wrong with turning your brain off and going along for the ride sometimes. I never thought the day would come when you'd read the ACOTAR series, but this was hilarious! If you're looking for more mildly cursed yet interesting raunchy fantasy romance, it would be delightful if you tried reading the Four Horsemen series by Laura Thalassa, where in each book a different protagonist romances each of the four horsemen of the apocalypse ;)
