Not only that, but the B-Roll shots are HILARIOUS... a Legacy Hornet going Mach 2.6? LOL, maybe with no wings, pointed straight down, in afterburner.... Mach 1.8 rated, but struggles to reach Mach 1.2 with any realistic load and is out of fuel when clean. In fact... I'm not even sure how the hell they rated the Hornet at that speed in the first place. Never mind the MFD buttons don't line up with the lines on the display and the lines don't line up with their functions above them! I get it's B-roll, but seriously :P
Theoretically, that Alien ship design shouldn't allow it to maneuver as well as it does in atmospheric flight. The shape is all wrong, and it's got no visible exterior control surfaces like flaps, ailerons, or even a rudder to help steer; additionally, the craft may look sleek but its not actually all that aerodynamic so it would/should probably have had a lot more difficulty breaking the sound barrier due to air resistance than a craft specifically designed for atmospheric flight like the F/A-18 does. Moreover, difficulty maneuvering and handling even under ideal conditions become progressively a lot harder to manage the faster an object travels through the air, which should have made atmospheric flight exponentially more difficult for something shaped like the Alien Attacker to move and fly the way it does, given that its design was already supposed to be unsuited for this application to begin with. Factoring in the influence of probably ridiculous amounts of drag created by all the sharp edges and protrusions like all the gadgetry around the front window and the base of the dorsal swell, it's nothing short of miraculous that the Alien ship can fly at all. Finally, travelling and/or turning at high speed generates increasingly significant amounts of G-Force that, when taken to the extremes shown in the clip, are incredibly hard on both the plane and the pilot's body; attempting maneuvers more punishing than an air frame is designed to withstand can cause a craft to spontaneously disintegrate in mid-air, or cause the pilot to temporarily go blind/faint altogether, or both. Even in the real world, there have been recorded instances of pilots accidentally bending or shearing the wings completely off of their aircraft by over-stressing the air frame. Taking all of this together, it's my guess that Jimmy was hoping to find and exploit some kind of weakness or deficiency the Aliens hadn't already addressed or been able to overcome by attempting to outrun/outmaneuver the Attacker, or, failing that simply try to outlast the Alien pilot in a test of sheer fortitude in withstanding the incredible strain of extreme high speed maneuvering, in the hopes that at least one of those three tactics could be used to develop a strategy in which to fight back, or at least survive.

They had just witnessed their whole squadron get wiped out but their whole air group in what could only be called a slaughter. To illustrate this concept, think of a fast moving car going down the highway. If you were to stick your hand out flat against the wind, it would be pushed back and you'd have trouble moving it around; the faster the car goes, the harder your hand would be pushed back. If you were to change your hand's orientation so that it were sideways, like a fin, it would slice through the air far more easily and require much less effort to turn back and forth, since at that point it's in essence functioning in the same way the control surface of a jet's wing does. Although gravity manipulation might allow them to pull some insane turns in space, it shouldn't have allowed them to do so on Earth because the technology doesn't turn the entire ship intangible, like a ghost -- the wind would still hit it, and the faster it goes, the harder wind resistance it should have been for it to maneuver, unless the shield we see acts as some kind of saucer-like cocoon that lets the attacker cut through the air more cleanly in flight as air flows over the shield instead of the craft itself.
