The reason the Ent A had the weird 'bum-chin' was because it's the original Excelsior model and the studio didn't want to damage it as it would be used and re-used in future shows. So they added the lumpy bit specifically so they had a bit to destroy in Generations.

THE-E is badass! A perfectly logical evolution from the gorgeous D. Sleeker and built for battle. And I love the way the saucer section joins the engineering section too. The lines are not consistent with the curves present in the saucer and engineering section.

The design of the Federation post-Dominion war seems to be getting rid of the bulk and building ships that are practical, have real fighting ability while looking like it has teeth, and can also do the primary exploration of the Federation.

Always loved the glowing blue look of it, it looks so much more futuristic and adds such a great additional focal point to the design. The plain metal versions always look to me like somebody lazily slapped a radio telescope onto the front of the ship, which does not match the purpose of the deflector and also is the only piece of the design that looks ripped straight out of the 20th century whole cloth.

We can assume that as the previous big daddy class before the Galaxy they spent a lot more time pushing the frontier. During TNGs run Galaxy classes were rare and could only cover so much space, Mirandas and similarly vintage ships were probably resigned to the interior os federation space and generally safer known areas. Excelsior classes were still used as front line ships with admirals using them as personal flag ships and they probably still did a fair bit of deep space exploration until at least the Dominian war. So it's fair to assume that the Ambassadors were still serving far from home and so wouldn't be seen very often.

Enterprise-D is my favorite. It's so elegant, and the design philosophy of the utopian society is inspiring. It fits so well into the world Gene Roddenberry built.
The Kelvin Enterprise is, IMO, one of the ugliest. But I also think that's appropriate. So "worst-to-best" is hard to categorize without knowing what "worst" and "best" mean. The idea that it was over-engineered -- Star Fleet was experimenting with wild designs and testing the limits of what was possible because of the Kelvin encounter... It reminds me a lot of the French pre-dreadnought battleships. They were ugly, inconsistent, and over-engineered because it wasn't really clear what the "right" design was in post-wooden bottomed ship navies. They were throwing spaghetti at the wall and seeing what stuck. So I like the Kelvin Enterprise, in part, *because* I think it's ugly.

Personally I think the refit Enterprise of the first movie is the best, with th eoriginal running a very close second. If you read the book _The Making of Star Trek_ Gene Roddenberry and the producers specifically told the designers and creators that they wanted to avoid having any suggestion of rockets - they wanted the Enteprise to look both powerful and futuristic. Originally the saucer was to have bene a sphere (which has now entered canon as the Daedalus class). The movie refit made the design sleeker. I did not care much for the Galaxy class, the huge saucer looked topheavy. The Sovereign class is a great design though. The NX is fine. Discovery's Crossfield class is rubbish, the only one that looks worse is the absolutely hideous "remake"; a lumpen abomination complete with an engineering deck straight out of a Victorian steamer.. They apparently went out of their way to stick two fingers up at the original show by adding smoke trails when going to warp, which as I said, was something the original show specifically wanted to get away from. iirc Gene Roddenberry specifically said "I don;t want any rocket flames or trails"

I love the E, too. There are, however, a few changes I would liked to have seen. 1) I would have loved to see the warp nacelles just a little higher.... a tiny bit higher. Lengthen the support pylons just a hair, and 2) Shorten the secondary hull just a tiny bit in the middle. With the nacelles a little higher, and the drive section a little shorter, the design would have been a bit "aggressive" looking, and a bit... shall we say... sportier?

The ST:TMP Enterprise is one of the most beautiful pieces of machinery ever imagined. To me, it embodies the Starfleet ethos. It looks as if it were designed to explore the galaxy (as I would say the original design looks). The other Constitution class imaginings, especially with the darker grays, lean more to looking like battleships. I prefer less "pew pew" and more "seek out new life and civilizations."
Kelvin Timeline Enterprise looks like my kids' Superhero Squad characters: grotesquely comical. Which is okay for kids' toys, but not for ST.

Tactical reality dictated a more compact design from the frontal and side aspect. It's also been said somewhere that compacting the hull makes for greater warp field efficiency.

'79 had the shuttle ports that provided more ship wide docking access. '79 also looked more 'to scale' like a current US battleship or aircraft carrier, you could see the reasonable deck levels, maybe 3+ on the main saucer section, and the photon torpedo's coming off the warp core. The ship looked more live able and dense for a crew of 300+. Decent/Big size for the time; Powerful, and scrappy. :-)

With that background, I was 17 when TNG premiered. The Galaxy class Enterprise with it's separated cobra look WAS very weird, very odd, very challenging to accept. ...at first. Once she showed off her amazing advanced capabilities, and she saved her crew faithfully over and over, I was hooked. The 1701-D is a beauty and it was even great to see Geordi captaining a Galaxy class in Voyager. A lot of people are commenting on how the 'belt/chin' was added to the Enterprise-B in order to give the Nexus something to damage without damaging the Excelsior studio model. But nobody seems to be mentioning the ironic part that I heard, where they then couldn't *remove* the belt without damaging the model. Which is why the USS Lakota in DS9 shows up as the refit Excelsior-class. It's the last use of the original Excelsior studio model, all the other Excelsior-class ships seen on screen were the smaller tv-scale model built for TNG, or else CGI models.
I don't think there's anything I'd disagree with severely here, except perhaps the placements of the D and E. I love the Sovereign-class, and the tall ship aesthetic never even occurred to me before now. I see where you're coming from but the sleek, compact and military sort of design just works for me. That said I do know what you mean about the Sovereign looking a little wonky from the front. The Excelsior design is indeed, in my opinion, spoiled by the Enterprise-B additions. They did actually alter the nacelles slightly and add extra impulse engines on the saucer, though.

I know that I'm so late to the party that it's likely few will read this, but I've always found it amusing as well as interesting that most fans' favorite designs are utterly tragic from a survivability standpoint.
    • The narrow gauge of pylons create targets for enemy vessels to cripple a ship with a single well-placed shot.
    • The saucer sections provide huge areas for target acquisition with the possibility of creating punch-through hull breaches going right through the saucer.
    • The windows would never exist in such quantity in any actual design, for multiple reasons. Each window is a stress point, the first areas to breach when the hull is subjected to any crush or shearing forces. By the 22nd century, one would hope that all "windows" on a spaceship would be virtual, indistinguishable to the untrained eye but much safer overall. Furthermore, the lights and such are aesthetically pleasing but again, from a tactical standpoint the design is inherently and massively flawed. To pour out so much EM radiation from thousands of points is essentially designing the ship to fail.
    • As for overall form factor, the ideal shape would be a sphere. Such a form would come with many, many advantages. Shield harmonics overall would be optimized. Shield strength at any given point would be maximized via distribution of the emitters. Similarly, weapons ports placed along the surface at points equidistant from those which surround it would provide total field of fire no matter where an enemy craft, asteroid, obstacle, etc is in relation to the ship. An interesting side benefit to a sphere design would be to enable maximum survivability in the event of a forced landing or even a crash. The outer section of the hull could be on magnetic or even physical bearings, enabling the outer hull to roll while the inner hull would remain stable, even without inertial dampeners. Lastly for this post, one crucial and frankly stupid design element from a tactical standpoint in nearly all ST ships is that of making the bridge Deck 1. The command center of any spacecraft should be in the most survivable section of the ship, in this case the core of the sphere.

Also a huge fan of the Ambassador class. I think it's so under-rated. Part of the reason it's so great is that it was a super-rushed build since it was made for "next week's episode" The original plan wasn't to have so many basic geometric shapes like the perfectly circular saucer and deflector dish, but those were easier to make in the era of physical models. As a result, it really looks like something that is actually practical to physically build in the real world, which is much less true of some of the later CG designs. The "circles instead of ellipses" design aesthetic matches the older 23rd Century designs perfectly (better than the intended design!) so if feel like a plausible pre-Galaxy explorer in the history of the fictional universe. A bit like how the last pre-Deadnaught battleships in the real world clearly look a bit like the later big gun Iowa class battleships, but with a bunch of stuff that looks like like 1800's ironclad cruisers.

I must say that the Enterprise D was nowhere near as nice as the movie refit constitution. It was an apartment in space and made of explodanium

The JJprise over the Refit?! *triggering intensifies*
I place the Constitution Refit and Galaxy Class at #1 and #2, respectively. The Kelvin designs are at the bottom of the barrel, with the NX-01 just barely above them.
I think the Ambassador Class was OK, but it could have been magnificent, had the design time not been so compacted. Regarding the saucer, the top needs to be more bulbous, or the bottom needs to be flatter. It’s very much a kitbash kind of look. The nacelles were far too fat, for their short length. I would have preferred them to be longer. The Bussard Collectors are a bit uninspired, and the square, 90 degree bends in the pylons seems to be incongruous with the overall design. I also dislike the oversized fantail or deck on the aftmost section. I didn’t like it on the Voyager, either. I do love the round, Constitution-style engineering hull, and the front of the dorsal hull was very Excelsior-like, which I love!

I think my favorite is a fan made design, the one by Madkoifish.

Yes, I'm one of those who completely disagrees with you on the Enterprise Refit. Always been my favorite, followed closely by the original. Always found the Excelsior class to be horribly ugly. The Enterprise-D is overrated.
    1) Enterprise Refit (TMP)
    2) Enterprise Original (TOS)
    3) Enterprise Discovery
    4) Enterprise-D
The rest I've never liked much at all, and I find the Kelvin to be one of the uglier attempts at redesigning. I dislike those nacelles most of all, and find the nacelles on the Refit to be one of the best redesigns.
If we were throwing other ships into the list, the Defiant would push in at #3 and the Reliant/Miranda at #4, both below the original and refit but above all the other Enterprises.

It is well established in canon that warp fields are asymmetrical. So an unbalanced ship actually makes more sence.

@@douglaseid9021 One. I didn't say anything regarding Abrams Enterprise being more astheticly beautiful than any other Constitution class, so I probably agree w you on that point.
      2. Among other places,Geordi was always talking about warp fields being asymmetrical in TNG. And , I'm not as sure, but I think, Belona mentioned it a time or two as well in Voyager. Tho I can't recall when in what episode. So if you want to continue to disbelieve or doubt my assertion, then go on ahead w it.

@@bbbabrock , I was thinking of what Gene Roddenberry laid down as guidelines for nacelles, but that ship has sailed. Also, I was speaking aesthetically rather than "will it run?" So, we do agree.

Enterprise-D: "It's so, so different from the original Enterprises"
"retains all the same design elements"
    Make up your mind.
By the way, the Enterprise-D looks like someone put the original ship in a car crusher but changed their mind halfway through. And JJ Abrams Enterprise, like the movie, is an abomination.

Ranking Es is hard! It can change a little day to day. From best to least best:
Refit 1701 - refined a great to perfection.
D - a little top heavy sure, but simply beautiful, so majestic
1701 - yes it doesn’t look that “real” anymore, but it’s the ultimate silhouette
    E
    1701 Kelvinverse
    NX-01
1701 Disco - too squat, gone overboard on greebles
B - without the additions to the hull would be much, much higher, maybe 2 or 3
C - never quite understood the love for this one
    1701-A Kelvinverse - just doesn’t look right
