  • Loose and free landscapes don't just 'happen'. If you've tried to paint expressive and intuitive landscapes, you know what I mean.
    I wanted to paint free and loose mixed media collage landscapes for years, but I just didn’t know how to do it. I thought I should just know how, and that not being able to produce them was due to a lack of talent. I couldn’t have been more wrong, because intuitive and free painting happens in an environment-without it, it’s just not likely or even possible. Over the years I picked up tactics and exercises and created a process by which I could learn how to paint intuitively. I wanted to share a bit of that with you today.
    If you’d like to learn in depth about this process of intuitive landscape painting, come join me in my class: www.marabethquinart.com/intui...
    Video Chapters:
    0:00 Introduction to the Process
    1:26 How I begin and what I’m thinking about in the first stages
    2:46 Letting the painting emerge and what is necessary for that to happen
    4:44 How I use layering in the intuitive process
    7:56 Moving naturally from general to specific
    11:58 Learning to solve problems
    16:15 Always make it an ‘experiment’

      Thank you Maggie-it really is a fun process! If you feel like you get stuck trying to paint looser and less representational, then I know you’d like the course a lot.

      I relate-I don’t know that I will ever easily relinquish control, but it certainly does get easier to do so with practice 😊

      I’m so happy to hear this! And I relate to what you’re saying-I have spent many years doing that as well and that’s pretty much why I had to seek out ways of learning to do it and think about it differently.

    Hi Marabeth!
    I don't know how I missed this video, but so glad I saw it! I have been slowly working on my small intuitive pieces and, just as I was about to do the sky with the wedge and all, now I see that I could and SHOULD go back and put more layers of paint and collage on them! Yay! Glad I have a chance to play some more with them! 😄
    REALLY enjoying this dynamic class! Thank you so much!!

    I'm struggling with adding collage that then distorts the paper underneath when it dries, and try as I might, I can't get rid of the wrinkles in the bottom paper, but the collage piece lies flat. What am I getting wrong? This happens whether I use gesso or not, it doesn't seem to make any difference. I've tried re-wetting the entire piece and then letting it dry flat, under weight and even that doesn't work.

    • @marabethquinart
      @marabethquinart  Před 6 měsíci +3

      It might help to let dry between the layers, and also when I apply thicker collage pieces that have the tendency to wrinkle, I smooth over them with my finger and return to them every few minutes to do it again as it dries and adheres to the surface. I’ve also made friends with bubbles and wrinkles and now even purposely use them in my work to convey what I want. It’s hard to answer your question in a very helpful way since I can’t see exactly what you’re talking about. If you are enrolled in one of my classes, feel free to email me with pictures

    I am about to embark on the intuitive landscape painting course and cant get hold of the Golden glazing mixture which you use. My glue for decoupage leaves the painting and papers much too wet and the whole thing buckles and I have to wait a day before everything dries. So I see this glaze is quick drying and very important for good results. I can get hold of marabu collage glue here in Germany. Will that be alright?

    • @marabethquinart
      @marabethquinart  Před 6 měsíci

      I’ve never tried the Marabu, and honestly I’ve never been a big fan of anything in the ‘glue’ category. But you may love it-it really is personal preference. Can you get Golden or Liquitex Matte Medium by chance? That might be the closest thing to the glazing medium

    • @marabethquinart
      @marabethquinart  Před 6 měsíci +1

      Not at all-some people like to just to feel more comfortable using collage, but if you’d like to dive right in, I teach you how to make your own papers in this class. You’ll do just fine 😊

    Love this. But how does one know where to pop the color? Does one need to know color theory first? ❤

    • @marabethquinart
      @marabethquinart  Před měsícem

      I know a little color theory, but a lot of it comes from just making lots of paintings and trying things. Nothing teaches like just doing it. Learning some color theory really gives you that context and knowledge, and then just painting and trying things gives you the experience so that eventually, you have an spontaneous impulse to put a pop of color somewhere.
