  • Vic shows how to comply with the pmag service bulletin by checking for axial play. Then he shows the cause of sharp uneven teeth on the starter ring.

    I was an early Pmag adopter and got my money back after a number of failures. I even visited the guys at their home shop in TX. They were a couple of nutbags making beautiful garbage.

    That's radial play on the EMag

      Well, EMAG calls it axial and lateral. No mention of radial.

      radial = lateral (sideways movement).
      Axial movement is along the axis of the shaft.

      @@baselegaviation1614 Exactly - seems they cover them both: "Remove ignition and examine shaft and drive gear condition. Note: Ignition disassembly is not necessary (and if done may void your warranty). Look for excessive play (lateral and axial). Shaft rotation should be free, with no catching, flat spots, or grinding. The shaft on “P” models (with internal alternator) will have a push-pull rippling effect as the shaft turns and the permanent magnets pass the rotor poles. This is normal and expected. If a P model ignition does not have this magnetic ripple, the unit requires additional (shop) service."
      I'm glad you produced this video. I was not sure exactly what a "bad" PMAG looks like, and this video is very helpful.

      @@dermick IMO if it says Emag on it, it's bad.

    Why can't E-Mag use bearings that will make it to TBO? Surefly has figured it out.

      This is an excellent question. Since the parts are the same, why are some seeing this happen and not others? Removing the mag during annual is a PITA.

    i subscribed so here we go..
    1:59 give some thought to that starter's electric ground.
    i pulled the starter form a DodgeRAm 1999 .
    the end bearing aluminium housing was welded to the engine/trans.
    if THAT starter is grounding thru the gear... ! 🦧
    (sumting is goin ON )

      that’s not the problem. the starter is case grounded through the 4 attachment bolts. They are secure.
