How Much Did My AliExpress Super Bike Cost?

- In this video I breakdown how much my AliExpress superbike cost. The Hygge Model S was almost fully built using parts from AliExpress except for the saddle and cassette (bought used locally), and the tires (given to me). For a sub-$2k USD bike, it beats the insane prices of name brand bikes.

Anyone else build an AliExpress or bike from China straight from the manufacturer? Mainstream prices are crazy so this is the way to go 😂 What’s your favourite build so far?
Any upgrades coming soon? Specifically Shimano R7020/R7070 combo?
@@cosmicredeemer3109 no upgrades for now. I don’t feel like dealing with hydraulics and find the hybrid disc brakes good enough for my purposes. Might get new rotors and pads to see how they feel though!
Hey man !
I totally relate to your project and you can be proud :)
I built 3 bikes in total on Ali, the current one (the last in date) is a rim brake i built it in 2021 the price in total was 2500€ because i went with dura ace di2 R9100 ^^
But overall best bargain ever it still rides beautifuly + the satisfaction you get when you did it !
Well done again !
That’s awesome! What are the 3 bikes and which one was your favourite? Di2 sounds amazing. Enjoy your ride 👌
I too built by parts from Alexpress 2 years ago. Started @ covid lockdown. Full unpainted carbon frame. Frame ,50mm wheels, handlebars, 12sp carbon groupset with carbon levers, carbon seat from another supplier as my carbin helmet . I too changed cranks from 170 down to 165 from another supplier. Whole lot was £1204.04
Building a bike part by part is so satisfying! Congrats on your build and enjoy the ride 👍
Waxed chain, is the best chain, 100%. Great build, incredible price. I am sure it rides as good as any other big name road bikes out there. Ride safe.
Agreed, it takes a bit of setup work to wax the chain, but once it’s done there’s no going back! Thank you for watching and ride on 🤙
Nice build love that frame and the paint job. I recently built my first road bike, but I went a different route. I got an aluminum frame with external routing and made it 1X 11 using a Sensah SRX Pro 1x11 groupset with a 48T Chainring and 11-36 Cassette. I also got no name, carbon seatpost, fork handlebars and saddle. I took the spare road Elitewheels ENT wheelset from my gravel bike and put on Panaracer Gravelking SS 700 x 28C. The bike total weight with pedals and a single bottle cage 19.37 lbs. The whole bike is steath black with the exception of the chain, cassette and rotors. And total cost was about $1000. This was my first bike build and I think its awesome that I bullt the bike instead of just buying it. My only complaint is the brakes. Even with compression less housing, the brakes are not as good as a fully hydraulic brake system. Maybe in the future i get a hydraulic groupset instead.
Congrats on your first build! It’s always rewarding building a bike, especially your first. Enjoy the new custom ride 🤙
Very impressive. Love it.
Thank you for watching 🙏
That is an audaciously long rear der cable housing
I would tend to agree with you. I’ve been told many times 😂 it was easy enough that after making this video I just shoved the excess into the frame lol
@@henrychungfitness problem solved 😀
Congrats on the build! I'm currently waiting for my Elves frames and wheels, ,and in the meantime i'm browsing on aliexpress to find the rest of the parts. How do you like your Supacaz bar tape?
Awesome the Elves was a contender when I was looking for bike frames but I settled on the Hygge. I like the supacaz tape. The end caps had rusted screws though but that’s probably why it was cheaper
That shifter hood is unacceptably thick. Instant no go for me
Lol
Honestly feels really close to Shimano 105 🤷♂️ It’s a win in my books for the price and performance, but to each his own.
Cool build and nice video,thanks!
What about taxes from china?
Im in EU and wondering about carbon wheels, but I heard different opinions.
Sometimes they charge you tax sometimes not...
Did you order everything all together or separate ?
Did you have to pay any tax on top of that what you said?
Thanks!
Thanks for watching! Good catch, I believe I did end up paying less than $100 CAD for the customs and taxes. I ordered everything separately, and I find that you get charged taxes from your country only on large ticket items like over $500. No tax from AliExpress though
@@henrychungfitness Cool,thanks!!!
What brake housing did you use? You're not light at 75kg, so if you start doing real descents, you may want to make sure you get as good a performance as you can with cable actuated disc brakes. I installed keb-sl jagwire housing, except when I ran out. It's not a myth, the keb-sl is much less spongy, so it ought to brake better. Pads and bedding matter too though. I'm 82kg before bottles and kit, I have cable discs on a gravel bike and I've been in really sketchy descents. My front disc is blue, I don't want to know how hot it gets, and I really don't know if I would be able to use non keb-sl housing given I'm a fat pig. I do know I don't want to find out though :)
I believe I used the lowest grade of Jagwire 😂 it’s true the braking isn’t the best, but that’s on my list to upgrade pads and rotors one day, and even housing (but that’s the bigger pain because of the integrated handlebar). Thanks for the tip though and ride safe!
Hi bro, do you think 32mm tire width can fit in the rear side? im planning to get the same frameset as well but i want to minimize the clearance or gap between the tire and the curve portion of seat tube..thanks in advance!!
I’ve heard that 32mm might fit but it’ll be really tight. I think the front can do 32mm but might be best to search around
if you have the opportunity, I will ask you to compare hygge model s frame with specialized tarmac sl8 and other high end bikes.
We wonder if there is a difference between them, which one is harder and faster etc.
I would if I could, but I can’t afford an SL8 nor would I ever pay that much money to buy a high end bike 😂
@@henrychungfitness Hahaha
Yes, you are right, even if I could afford it, I would not want to spend a lot of money.
Actually what I wanted to say is; if you have a friend around you who owns a sl8 or a pinarello, I asked you to experience, compare and write your opinions. thanks.
@@ByAliiTR none of my friends have mainstream super bikes. Perhaps I need new/more friends? 😂🤔
Hey Henry, when you purchased it looks like they shipped the frame and the wheels together. Did you have to pay shipping fees for both?
Thanks!
Yes, I had to pay shipping for both even though they came together.
Hi, I’m canadian and really appreciate seeing canadian prices. I was wondering what is your height and do you feel comfortable on the 52? Also do you know the max width tire that would fit in that frame? Thanks
@@bill6040 I’m 5’11” and feel comfortable on the 52 (it’s more like a 54). I believe max tire width is 30mm (maybe 32 but those would be a tight fit)
Does really have any chain rubbing when combining sensah and shimano? I also have and cannot resolve it
I get chain rub when I’m cross chaining, but not much else that I can tell. What Shimano groupset are you running?
I mixed with shimano Tiagra. Chain rub happens when I stroke pedal heavily (biggest chainring + 2 smallest cogs)@@henrychungfitness
If you are using Sensah Empire(SRAM pull ration) you can use Shimano Sora front derailleur, i've been using it for 3 years without any rubbing or chain drop.
@@gogobabaks oh thanks for your info, maybe I am wrong at setup step.
how tall are you and how much reach in the handlebars?
I’m about 5’11” and I chose the 100mm stem
Nice build, but why do you need power meter pedals on a commuter/recreational bike? Especially for a budget build that would be the firts part to skip for me.
A friend just recently bought a beginner budget gravel bike GRX 1/11 for 1600EUR and on comparison (OK Road vs Gravel) the HYGGE is what I would prefer!
You don’t need a power meter for a commuter/recreational bike, it’s just what I had lying around 😂 sometimes I use my Hygge to train outdoors and the power meter pedals are handy
the cable from the frame to the rear derailleur is too long
I agree with you. After this video I shoved the cable into the frame so now it’s shorter 😂
Hey, I'm really thinking of building the same bike. How has it held up so far? Anything you would have done/bought different if you re-did the bike today? Any issues?
And keep the content going, I'm going to buy most of your product recommendations, all great stuff!
So far it’s been good. My headset did seem to loosen a bit as I ride pretty rough roads and gravel, but I’ve since torqued the expander plug tighter. I went with mechanical initially, but I’d say it’s near impossible to maintain with the 4 cable housings in the handlebar.
All said I really enjoy riding the bike 🤙 thanks for watching and best of luck on your new ride whatever bike you end up going with!
@@henrychungfitness Thanks for the quick response! I've read that it's common with headset play, and that people have started adding 1-2mm extra spacers, did you add that aswell?
And would you have built the same bike today or went another route?
@@oskarwreiber5854 I haven’t added extra spacers. I’m glad I got the Hygge frame and would probably buy it again as I love how it looks and really enjoy riding it 👍
@@henrychungfitness Awesome, that's reassuring! How about the Wheeltop EDS, do you think it's worth it to go for from the start? How much difference does it make compared to 105's f.x?
wow amazing. I built everything on my bike except for the bottom bracket. Have u done that yourself? i think it's the most challenging part
Yes I assembled the BB as well. It’s quite easy to assemble if you have the right tool 👍
Hi Henry! I look forward for my frameset, and can't decide whitch size should i buy, i'm about 185 cm. I think 55 should be ok, and it's better to buy bigger frame than smaller? I'm trying to compare geometry to other bikes.
Hmm that’s a tough one. I’d say you’re in between the 52 (M) and 55 (L). Im close to your height and went for the 52 for a more aggressive fit though
@@henrychungfitness I'd like to try M size but i'm afraid of the front wheel can touch my toe, i had this in the other bike some time go (kellys soot 50 2019 Frame was L). Now i ride on diverge e5 base in 58 size and it's good for me, it can be a little shorter and will be perfect, but road bike it's completly difrent than gravel so that's why i'm worry about. Also about month ago i was on LONDON RIDE where I rent a bike, it was specialized Venge Carbon frame was 56 and was good, i tried find the geometry but i don't know year production. Sorry for bad english :D
@@henrychungfitness So what is your height in cm and what’s your cocpit length?
@@justdrive4558 I’d probably suggest you go for the 55 for you then. Also maybe try reaching out to the vendor and they’ll give you some advice on sizing
@@justdrive4558 I’m 5’11” and went for 100mm stem.
What size frame is that? I'm 5'9 with 31" inseam. Wondering if I should go S or M
I got the size M with height 5'11" and inseam 33"
@@henrychungfitness nice. Does it fit well or feel kind of cramped?
@@j03yl33 I like it and it fits well 👍
What’s the saddle?
It’s a specialized power comp saddle 👍
@@henrychungfitness been looking at some of the 3D printed AliExpress saddles. On the fence.
I’ve seen decent reviews on them, but I haven’t jumped on them yet. Not sure about how to go about cleaning a 3D printed saddle 😂
the downside is there's almost no resale value aside from the drive train.
There is, and your entry point is so much lower that even if you lose more in % terms, you lose less in absolute terms. And if the buyer gets to try the bike to check how it performs, then you're good. It does imply physical sales though, remote eBay stuff would be sketchy indeed, a lot of people don't know what they're doing when they build these bikes.
Good point. I do find the market isn’t completely aware of the Chinese brands just yet, but slowly we’re getting there. And as Pierre mentioned the absolute loss is definitely less 👌
Would you consider helping a brother out building the bike :D could be cool content to shoot eh (I am in Toronto)
Congrats on the Hygge! Unfortunately I’ve got too many projects on the go, but there are tons of resources online for bike builds and lots of local shops that can help 🤙
