  • I have finished building the structure that extends the roof of the small barn. This will not only create a dry area, protected from the rain but also help with keeping temperatures down during the summer, or at least that's the plan!

    You sure have been busy. That's a nice-looking Edition you put on. Nice to hear your appreciation for the old vintage refrigerator, it is a real treasure.

      I really love that fridge, I think it has a ton of character, which is great! Can't wait to restore it properly and put in the future kitchen, in the big barn!

    Very good how you are supporting yourself with temporal makeshift structures in order to get jobs achieved where you normally would need more than just one person to do. I am glad with you being happy about the extention of your barn. Also, I really enjoy your looks with your fit and shirtless and hunky body!

    Looking absolutely great ... and the barn 😁Great idea with the fridge as no one needs too much but be patient until you can improve the solar.

    (Roof overhang) Looking good, bigger than I expected you to make it. You definitely want it to be strong, high winds are not friendly. (Refrig) Nice to have two and/or a back up (if one goes out on you) when you get your power up'd as needed. Then you can make those "manwiches" in either building! *wink*

      I'll definitely be keeping both fridges! Some day there'll be one in the small barn and another in the big barn. I'll definitely be making tons of sandwiches there ;)

    The roof looks great Goncalo. Those rafters definitely need to be a lot thicker to support the weight of the roof tiles. It won’t be long before the roof starts to sag. I would reinforce with some more thicker rafters. I know it will mean removing the tiles, maybe a job for the spring as the rains have now arrived! Just an idea with the fridge. Get it started with the power bank until the draw of electricity drops. Underneath the veranda will be a great place to sit, maybe even when it’s raining ☔️

    • @goncalovalle
      @goncalovalle  Před 9 měsíci +2

      Thank you! I have since added some more support to the roof structure, hopefully it'll be enough! If not, you're right, I'll definitely have to think about adding something like that!
      Regarding the fridge, that's not a bad idea! I think the only annoying thing would be that I would have to constantly change it from the solar to the battery bank every time the fridge starts running

    Adding the leger boards was a good way to support your rafters. It may be an optical distortion, but I think I see a droop in your beam that spans the opening between the posts. That is likely result of the load the tiles bring to the party. The tiles are much heavier than you think. This is a good application for the masons string. Stretch it from one end to the other and see if your beams are drooping. If they are, don't despair - there is a fix.
    FIrst, you're going to go to the center of the beam and fit a post (can be a straight tree limb or branch) that you can use to jack the beam up until it follows the string. You can do this on all three posts or one at a time, depending on the tools you have available.
    Go back to your lumber dealer and get the dimensional equivalent board but twice as thick. (in the US we call them 2" X whatever - but they actually measure 1 1/2" thick. WHen you get that back to your property, spread glue on the mating faces and drive a long screw every 12"s that almost comes out the other side. Leave the post in place until the glue has a chance to reach full strength.
    That should stiffen up the beam considerable. We don't want the roof to fall on your guests heads. If I was framing that, I would have used 2 - 2X6's.
    A tip to save a buck on the next project like this. See if there is a local sawmill that will sell you rough cut lumber for framing. It will be dimensionally bigger and it should be cheaper than a retail store.
    If yo get sag along your rafters, you will have to add another rafter between each rafter in place. Cut them to length and roll them up into vertical position on the ledger strips and toe screw

      Thank you so much for this comment! I think you are 100% right, I underestimated the weight of the roof tiles.
      I since have done a simmilar thing to what you sugested as a way to try to add more structure and strenght to the whole thing. I'm confident that it worked! Maybe one day I'll add some more support, if I see that it needs it.
      Next time I'll definitely be using some thicker wood!

    • @stevejohnstonbaugh9171
      @stevejohnstonbaugh9171 Před 9 měsíci +1

      @@goncalovalle Happy you noticed the sag on your own. That is the best way to learn. As to the common knowledge in the carpentry profession; 1" X lumber is trim (not load bearing) and 2"X lumber is structural (load bearing). That is a good place to start. I think the shed roof addition is a great idea. The fact that it add south facing shade in the summer is terrific. I imagine you'll build a stone wall outside of the low end and fill in the hole with rock and dirt form the high side? Will be a very nice place to gather and relax. ♥

    I'm very inspired by your channel, in the first place cause it is great what you do, but also cause I have a similar piece of land in Portugal with a very similar small barn. I was wondering if one make a small barn bigger, like you did or if you need permission of a Camara, or that one can you just do it?

    Is the electrical shortfall with battery power or your inverter?

    • @goncalovalle
      @goncalovalle  Před 9 měsíci +2

      I believe it's the inverter's fault! If you watch closely, when I tested the power draw from the fridge it initially pulled about 1200W, before going down to 80W. I think that's the issue. My inverter is rated for 800W so I think it can't handle that initial peak. (It should in theory be able to peak up to 1600W, but I guess not 🤷)

    • @stevejohnstonbaugh9171
      @stevejohnstonbaugh9171 Před 9 měsíci +2

      @@goncalovalle 800 watts is a small inverter. You can put a 3000 watt inverter on your Christmas list. That is the entry level inverter for a homestead. Best wishes! 😊
