OUTLINE:
Make sure you’ve structured and outlined your content
* Refer to previous video: • How to outline and str...
Scripting vs. Improvising
- Scripting = less natural but less editing
- Improvising = more natural but more editing
Hybrid Voice
* Authenticity is your biggest ally when it comes to gaining your student’s trust
* You can achieve what’s called a “hybrid voice” through a consistent writing practice
- 1. Write
- 2. Record yourself reading what you wrote
- 3. Listen back and edit to make it sound more natural
- Repeat steps 2 and 3 until you’re satisfied
* You can apply this method to make your script sound more natural even if you haven’t already developed a writing habit
* If you feel comfortable, invite someone to listen as you deliver your script and provide feedback on how natural you sound.
Step 1: Write your rough draft
* Don’t edit as you go
- Rip out your backspace key (JK)
- If you need to add specific instructions or other information that you need to research before writing, make a quick note and move on
- You can always go back later and put it in
* The goal is to get into a flow state
* If you have trouble writing without editing, you may find it easier to dictate your rough draft
* Record yourself going over the course material using the audio recording app on your phone
* Use an app that will create a transcription of your audio
- Free dictation tools: Apple Dictation on iOS, Windows 10 speech recognition, Google Docs voice typing
- Just Press Record - $4.99 (iOS)
* Can record and then transcribe
* Can record into other iOS devices (like Apple Watch) and it automatically syncs
- Descript - $20 per month - www.descript.com
* Automatically adds punctuation and basic formatting
* Also has features that allow you to edit videos directly through your transcript
Step 2: Edit your rough draft
* Make corrections
* Check for natural speech
* Make performance notes (put in brackets)
- Words or phrases that need greater emphasis
- Notes about something you’re demonstrating
* May want to allow for ad-lib
- Jokes, personal stories
- Can increase the authenticity
- Can help you stay loose on the scripted parts
Step 3: Prep your script for delivery
* Add formatting so you’re more aware of the over-all structure
- Titles, bold, & italics
- Especially helpful if you’re doing V/O
- You can share as a supplement to your course and increase the value
* Break the text up
- It’s important to avoid the “wall of text” but break it down even more
- It’s hard to read a wall of text, but it’s even harder to perform (which is essentially what you’re doing)
- Rather than 3-5 sentence paragraphs, break it down into 1-3 sentence sections.
* Save an unformatted version for the TelePrompTer
- Some TelePrompTer apps will automatically remove formatting, but it’s good to have a clean transcript just in case.

What kind of experience have you had delivering on camera? What's your favorite way to write?
i guess im asking randomly but does anyone know of a trick to get back into an instagram account..?
I was stupid forgot the account password. I love any tips you can give me
Not much experience except I can only record and upload video/music we're making on CZcams. My favorite way to write is paper and pen.
Are use voice to text capture - I do exactly what you described - but I just speak freely and don’t even have to worry about typing! I capture it all into text, then I go back and clean it up, rewrite, etc. The free flow is really easy when I’m just speaking out loud as if I’m speaking to an audience. Everything gets captured and I can clean it all up later.
Very well thought out, structured and presented.
Started writing my script. Thanks for creating such amazing content!
Yeah !! Do more videos like this !! It's great
Excellent! Very pragmatic and useful. Love it!
Very good content Ben. Have been watching your videos only for the past week or so and I find it to be very useful. The content is well broken down for consumption by someone who is trying to get the first online course shipped. Thanks
I can totally agree`!
This channel is a treasure!
THIS WAS SO HELPFUL, THANK YOU!
Thanks so much. Was very helpful!
Well I love to type my ideas out. I also love to have just a pencil and book and sketch my ideas out.
Thanks for the hybrid voice hint, very essential
Thanks for that. Sitting at a computer is definitely my approach to writing
These have been great, Ben! Excited to see Podia double-down on video since that's what so many of us are doing with the platform.
I've definitely found scripting the on-camera portions to be really helpful, then screencast/presentation sections can be more improvisational because it's easier to edit. I still don't feel completely comfortable on camera, but having the script actually makes it feel more natural/authentic because I don't have to think about what I'm saying while recording.
Bryan Zavestoski Thank you, Bryan! It’s really interesting how different people approach speaking on camera. I have a friend who essentially writes the script in his head and delivers it from memory. I actually really enjoy going off the cuff, but if I didn’t use a script, I would have a ridiculous amount of footage to edit 😆. What kind of material do you teach?
@@PodiaTV Yeah, love hear about different processes. It definitely takes some time to figure out what works for you. I like the unscripted stuff if the goal is more entertainment, but prefer something more concise and scripted when it's more educational.
My main course right now is about user interface animation (meaningfulmotionui.com/course). Currently working on a podcast and some other projects around productivity and consistently doing creative work, but will probably come back to the design stuff next year (Webflow + After Effects probably).
Great! Very helpful thanks!
Thanks mate, very helpful!
Very helpful and clear ! Thanks
Very helpful. Thank you.
Excellent video Ben! A lot of my videos are software training so most times I do not show my face but I have experimented with my face in the corner, I mostly use Camtasia for screen recording.
For scripts, I always used to script everything out word for word, but to save time, now I just script out the highlights, practice several times and then record. It’s more natural and faster except I usually have to edit out my rambling. 😁
and how could you describe your experience using Camtasia ? Is it good and practical ?
WOW, thank you sooo much! ❤
Thank you for the video!
Thanks, easy to understand.
Nice lessons I like that
when I click on links in the menu on the website, the pages are blank white?
Thank you fir sharing host
Hi international Professional that on your explanations. Yea- may almighty help us succeeded with our advantages.
Is there a way to update a lesson after launching the course? To make it better or more up-to-date, however without losing comments to the lesson? 🤔
Or at least to add a 2nd video in the same lesson, perhaps it can be better than substituting in some cases.
Same about pdf and any supplementary materials.
I am better at writing than dictating. Sometimes I dictate from a script. But for all that I am a confident speaker. I am just afraid of the permanence of recording.
That's definitely a common fear. One thing I do to make myself feel better is to look back at earlier videos from creators I admire (or even my own earlier videos). It reminds me that everyone starts somewhere and encourages me because I can see how my videos have improved over time 😊
@@PodiaTV Yes, that is what I am going to do. Start recording my presentations on video.
unfortunately since it's my first time I don't understand what a script is because I have never seen one. Do you have an example?
I ❤ Descript, but it doesn't integrate with other the different online website or other app, just a handful of them.
What program can I use to edit a ZOOM recorded webinar? What's the best way to record a course?
Hello WaterRockWellness, you can use OBS, its very easy to use. Here is a video explaining how to use it czcams.com/video/s0AlPACw3mQ/video.html

👨💼Should have worn a tie tho
I write more on jonals, and type them into my system
What, am I 5? What's up with all the pops and swoosh sounds in this demo? Is your video editor 15 years old?
What are you 70?
@@CountingStars333 Nope, I'm 25.
