      Thanks Jeremy for bringing this up! So many people think 1400 is a lot for this!
      120 000 is only the revenue, and that is 80 days (mostly weekends too)+ editing days gone from your life. Never getting those days back.
      Sounds like a horror life.
      Her quality is already good enough, so why not position yourself as the best female wedding videographer and charge a premium? Just focus on high earning couples and bump up the pricing + add some spice in post. Suddenly you make the same money and can use those extra 40 days for something else =)

      The real question is who ever said a female couldn't prevail in the video/photo industry? I've been to plenty events and have worked with females in the field and have never been surprised when they tell me the are killing it. Sounds like the creator of this video is trying to inspire but at the same time exploiting and creating this marginalisation of females in the industry. I would never make a video about how a certain person being able to do anything. We all are human and can do whatever we aspire to do.

    Females definitely excel at wedding filmmaking. My girlfriend second shoots for me at weddings and even though she knows very little about the technical side of filmmaking, she still manages to direct the couple and get shots that I wouldn't even have thought of. Always makes me wonder why you see so many female photogs and very few filmmakers.

  • @jpivko
    @jpivko Před 5 lety +11

    Consider me fascinated. My gut reaction when thinking about my experience managing clients is this does not seem possible unless she books without consultations and holds no pre-wedding meetings. If people are booking her over email and she is using a good CRM that automates billing, contracts and as much communication as possible, AND her videos are basically montage music videos like the one that was shown then 80 is feasible and I commend the minimalist approach to her business. I am a photographer mainly. I shot 52 weddings last year (20 of which I also provided video via a team of shooters I brought with me). I don't know how I survived with the addition of 35 engagements, consultation meetings, pre-wedding meetings and endless phone calls and emails. Perhaps she has designed a brilliant business that is minimal in overhead and admin and high in profit. I feel like I am doing it wrong after watching this video. Food for thought and I appreciate you making it.

    You hit on many great points here, and having a female videographer working alongside a male photographer is a win-win as a creative partnership. I would definitely take on an up and coming videographer. I've turned down a lot of work because I didn't have a dependable video assistant for that second camera. Do you like the glide-cam over the Ronin stabilizers? We use the Ronin M and it's cumbersome, what about the new single post Ronin units? Wouldn't she be better off with that? Great advantage that she's only doing 4 hours where my regular wedding day is more like 7 or 8 hours and it is certainly a test of stamina at times. Thanks again and thumbs UP, I wish her all the best!

Just curious why you have to strap on such a heavy rig for 4 or 5 hours when there are lighter alternatives. Art is not what is being gender challenged here, industry is, and this is an industry. You can be the most passionate artist in the world but that doesn't mean you'll inherently succeed. It can be challenging going into a field that is dominated by the opposing gender. Doing anything where you're outcast in some degree is challenging. Also you need more than heart for this stuff, you need start up, equipment, connections to get you going and then passion comes into play to help you succeed to a greater degree.

      Does she make also documents from the weddings or just wedding highlights (< 5 min clips)? I kinda can't tell how she could be shooting 2 weddings a week and and on top of that be able to edit 4 videos... and still do it well (I suppose).

No bookings, can’t work with the gimbal I just bought, feel like a failure. Event though I tried I can’t find a mentor it feels like it is only competition out here. 4 hours in Utah for an LDS wedding is typically the couple coming out of the temple, getting photos/video group shots of the guests and family, then going around with the couple at the temple. After that, later in the evening there’s the reception, cake cutting, dancing and the sendoff. Two hours at each section. Probably no live ceremony to deal with.

    I can’t stand directing couples on thier wedding day. It’s thier day to enjoy. As a wedding film maker myself the last thing I want to do is constantly direct couples to do certain things. Surely that’s not enjoyable for the couple. You capturing the day not making a Hollywood movie. YES it makes great video but for me that then becomes more about the filmmaker and not the couple. They have one day so I like them to enjoy it and I film it non obstructively. It must be an American thing all this directing.
    Other than that love the channel x

      @ploscnicu Před 5 lety +3

      In college I used to give First Dance lessons to couples and most of them were pretty stressed out the day before or the same day because of the importance of the event; sometimes I just needed to remind them to smile; don't think Kaylor does that for every couple, some are just naturally good with camera, some need 'mentoring' , in the end they will surely forget about the 'directing part' but will definitely enjoy the video for decades.

    • @originalsbysean1336

      I think it boils down to matter of opinion. If your happy to direct and the client is happy then who cares.

      100% agree with you. I've shot many weddings where the photographer directs the couple every minute of their day. So much to the point it wasn't even their wedding anymore, it was the photographer's. The moment is ruined when you direct them too much. Our job is to capture their day to the best of our ability, not turn it into a scripted movie.

    Doing 80 weddings a year is very commendable.. However, what I really want to know is how do you handle doing 80 weddings a year with the kinds of personalities what come with weddings. Those who work weddings know what I mean.

  • @HeavySpiral
    @HeavySpiral Před 5 lety +3

    What do you mean male dominant? From my perspective most of my girl friends don't care... they want to be on the other side of the camera. It's only natural for it to be male dominant when more men are interested and when they look back in the history there are men all the way down, hmmm seems like I should be able to do it (a man thinks). On the other side women feel intimidated and men make it seem harder than it is (male ego, sorry about that ladies we are born with a regular one but once we start to grow it...) so yeah we are part of the problem but not the only cause.

    • @HeavySpiral
      @HeavySpiral Před 5 lety

      Well I guess you could say that but I am from another country which isn't as much, still like I said it is mostly men but it's not entirely our fault. Most boys grow up wanting to be like Steven Spielberg or Martin Scorsese or Stanley Kubrick, there aren't a lot of Female Filmmakers for a girl to look up to. Growing up I always though ohhh Tarantino what a great director, I want to be like him someday. And it was okay for me to say that but if I girl said that, us boys would be like... he is a guy and you are a girl. I mean honestly I've seen a lot of work by female filmmaker and sometimes they offer a unique perspective, like men see things one way while women see it in another.. somethings I might ignore they won't etc. Anyways the video is great but I feel like "male dominant" kinda sounds scary... we could say that there is a lack of women in the field and we should do something to fix that, it sounds better to me that way. Just my opinion, I just think that male dominant puts too much pressure on women.

    • @HeavySpiral
      @HeavySpiral Před 5 lety

      Yeah I get it, I feel the same way. It's just that when I meet a someone's girlfriend or girl friend in general and I start talking about filmmaking etc they seem intimidated (I mean there are those who are like, I am gonna break the chain and be a famous female filmmaker but still) most of them don't really feel like it's something women can do, honestly though I know more girls who do photography and videography than guys. Anyways I guess my point was a waste of time, it's nice to have someone enforce the idea that this isn't a gender specific job. As long you have a story teller's mind and as long as you have the knowledge (which one can get through your course) you can actually do it. I know it's silly but that's the idea I got about a ton of things after watching Ratatouille... It's not that anyone can do it, it's just that it can come from anywhere. No limits. Anyway sorry to bother you.
