I think Pierce has actually done a good job bringing in different viewpoints on this. I appreciate that. However, I will say, after watching many of his interviews, it does become glaring how differently he speaks to his Muslim guests. I noticed this long before this interview.

People have to be aware of the reasons why we use the word "terrorist" in the media. I know it was used much before it made sense to me in the mid-nineties, but back then I was just a kid. I was in Algeria in 1997 where my cousins explained how awful were the terrorist attacks (beheaded, raped, burned civilian people) in 1995 in a specific region where people had mostly voted for and supported the "Islamic party". In 1997, the situation was still very frightening, there were a lot of bombing assassination attempts against civilians in Algiers. The Islamic party had been ruled out by the military and the national controlled press would tell people the terrorist attacks were committed by islamist terrorists, some of them foreigners, supposed to be trained in Afghanistan. By the way, Western nations didn't care about the "Algerian problem" and would see it as a civil war. But back then, I was really scared and started imagining terrorist islamists murdering my beloved family. I just couldn't understand what was going on. A cousin had been injured and traumatized by the explosion of a bomb while praying in a mosquee. It couldn't make sense to me. Then, I heard different stories away from the official press. A lot of civilians from the most affected region had moved to the capital city and I saw myself the precarious cabins they had made with recycled material. Some victims claimed they'd been attacked by military forces. For me, it was difficult to imagine how people, even trained, could act in a barbaric way; but it made more sense to consider that the national army could have perpetuated some or a great deal of what was presented as "terrorist attacks". I was just a kid, I could not understand it all, and I do not want to defend or convince of conspiracy teories, but I fully understand the power gained by the use of the word "terror".

There is a misuse of qualifications here. I am an expert in a field. I do not use my expertise to tell people to stop talking about the field. What I do do, is that when we talk about my field, I expand the conversation and inform it, effectively proving _why_ my expertise is valuable and needed.
What IS happening here is that someone is making legitimate questions about a field of expertise, and instead of allowing the discussion to expand and progress, he's trying to shut him up saying "but you can't continue this discussion because you don't have qualifications to be part of this conversation". This strikes me 100% as dishonest - it's just being used as a tactic to shut the other person up, rather than being an actual earnest use of expertise.
If someone on deathrow has qualms about their trial and their process, you don't shut him up by saying "but you didn't study and practice law for a decade like me. You don't have 3 degrees in philosphy and history like me. How can you question what is just and what is not?". No, you demonstrate that your expertise is valuable to describing the legal situation, citing case law, or describing the actual arguments about justice held a hundred or a thousand years ago.
Did you know that the word Doctor - as in the D in PHD - came from the latin word for "teacher". Deep credentials are often obtained not merely as self-masturbatory "I'm the smartest person in the room now" titles, but literally an authority granted with the intention to teach, to share. If you are unwilling or unable to explain even in the most basic level your expertise to someone earnestly trying to understand and engage, it makes your field sound fake or dishonest, rather than you sounding good.

Actually it is called interviewing. The interviewer asks question and the interviewee answers them. These questions have been asked to previous guests and the interviewee therefore knew before he agreed to come on the show exactly what he was going to be asked.
His refusal to answer the most simple and straightforward of questions, his interminable deflecting, his "whataboutery", his pseudo attack as a form of defence, was highly irritating, and it was actually surprising to me that Piers kept his composure as well as he did.
