Why This Ryan Gosling Film Wasn't Allowed A Sequel

  • Ryan Gosling is an actor that most everyone seems to have a specific image of. With a run of movies like The Notebook and Crazy Stupid Love, Ryan Gosling was seen as nothing more than a handsome heart throb relegated to romantic comedy and dramas. But one movie proved Ryan Gosling was so much more than that, he was legitimately funny and could carry multiple genres on his back. The Nice Guys was a movie so underrated, no studio even looked at sequel opportunities. Though one could argue, Ryan Gosling doesn't show up as Ken in Barbie, without The Nice Guys.

It's SUCH A GOOD MOVIE! I saw it, almost by accident, in theatre. To this day best spontaneous movie decision ever. Than I watched it again recently and honestly, I remembered, it was fun, but I surely underestimated HOW good it is. And yeah, it's a bit of a dilemma. On one side, I wish they would make another one, I want more of this, like with Lethal Weapon. But on the other hand: Maybe it should just be this one movie and not become another franchise/universe.

The Nice Guys also had one of my all time favorite performances of a child character in Holly. I think her role and the way she was written makes sense as well, her dad can't take care of himself, she drives him everywhere, cooks for him, reminds him of chores and events coming up. she had to mature a lot faster than kids her age. I always read her as a kid who thinks that because she stepped up like she did, she is an adult. Which I feel a lot of teenagers that age go through a similar phase in life. so her acting like an adult, and not really being phased by some of the adult things going on around her to me always made sense.

Shane Black's "The Nice Guys" fits in as a highlight in a period L.A. slacker noir marathon with The Coen Bros' "Big Lebowski", Tarantino's "Once Upon A Time In Hollywood", and PT Anderson's "Inherent Vice".
For an even more acid noirish fun time, throw in Terry Gilliam's "Fear & Loathing in Las Vegas" and Oliver Stone's "U-Turn".
Maybe even graduate to Tony Scott's "Domino", Joe Carnahan's "Smokin' Aces", and Michael Bay's "Pain & Gain" to top off a full weakend of gonzo crime farces.

That's awesome that he mentioned Abbot & Costello, because at about 15min in to Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein, Lou sees the candle on the coffin move and "tries" to whistle for Abbot/Bud...a scene that Gosling mimicked when finding the dead body after taking his tumble over the party house balcony. A scene that I recognized instantly since I was (still am) a huge fan of the Abbott and Costello films growing up. Never seen anyone mention the similarities before, but hearing him say he was a fan, I know that it was an intentional homage to Lou Costello's comic genius. And gotta say, that arm break scream that Gosling does gets me every time! Brilliantly done, perfect!

So few people have heard of them, and yet everyone I've ever recommended them to has had nothing but positive feedback. The Nice Guys' commercial failure is one of the biggest tragedies in recent movie history.

It becomes increasingly apparent that so many film makers in Hollywood have no idea about what is quality. There are endless remakes of superhero films and car chase films but that only caters to a niche population. In reality, the cinema-going audience could be more diverse if a wider range of films were commissioned but the studios won't take sufficient risks.
Last year, post pandemic, there were a large number of films that tempted me to watch them at the cinema, in 2023 far fewer. The Nice Guys is a perfect gem. It appeals to all ages (I'm 66) and types of people. It has wit and heart and is not formulaic. As a period piece it is perfect.

Bryan Cranston is another notable one, though obviously he made the opposite transition of hilarious and slapstick comedy to Walter White.
This film was amazing though. I knew with the scene with Ryan Gosling slicing his arm open, that I was in for a really special comedy. As they say, comedy is very often misery for the main characters.

I love The Nice Guys! I sort of stumbled upon it by accident while looking for something to watch during the pandemic, and then mentally kicked myself for not having watched it sooner. It was superb comedy and had great chemistry between Gosling and Crowe that made their partnership entertaining to watch. That recommendation to set it in the 70s was a stroke of genius too, because it gave the story that needed level of seediness and gives the movie added stakes because all of the evidence is exclusively on physical copies, not digital or easily replicated. Other great dramatic actors that excelled in comedic roles are Robert DeNiro in Meet the Parents/Mett the Fockers, James Caan in Elf, and Tom Cruise in Tropic Thunder. Conversely, comedic actors like Jim Carrey, Steve Carrell, Adam Sandler, Sacha Baron Cohen, Jonah Hill and Brian Cranston turned in stellar performances in dramatic roles too.

such a brilliant movie! but to be honest, it would have gone totally off my radar, too. fortunately i attended a seminar at my university (in germany) where once a year we would hold a little ceremony/festival for a talented cameraman. and that year it was Philippe Rousselot, who also worked on "The nice guys". Really loved that! got to know so many more great movies through that and had the chance to talk to such a brilliant cameraman.

THIS WAS SUCH A GOOD MOVIE. The duo played off one another well. Ryan actually channeled the comedy of Abbott Costello, it was brilliant!

Absolutely love the Nice Guys. A neo-noir comedy? Right up my alley. Right along with Kiss, Kiss, Bang, Bang it's my favorite of the genre and another great pairing of top tier talent. Shane Black is a master for that kind of material.

Hear me out. If you liked Kiss Kiss Bang Bang and The Nice Guys, check out The Kid Detective. Not nearly as good as the previous two films, but it reminded me a lot of them for some reason.

@@mikeedward9595 that sounds like something I'd watch. Used to be big into 'kid detective' shows and stories like Hardy Boys and this show in Canada called Deak Wilson. Thanks for the recommendation!

The fact that the critics gave this a higher score than the audience is wild. Usually the only time that ever happens is if the movie is super niche and trying to be smarter than it actually is. But in this case, it’s most definitely not trying to do any of that and works spectacularly. Definitely my favorite Gosling film
