  • When Brooklyn Nine Nine was first announced as a new Fox Sitcom, most people assumed this "funny cop show" was doomed to fail. Hot off of Saturday Night Live, Andy Samberg and crew set out to create something different than expected. After 8 seasons, and 1 almost-cancellation, Brooklyn Nine Nine has cemented itself as one of the best network sitcoms of the last decade. Though how exactly did Brooklyn Nine Nine crush our expectations and succeed when nobody thought it would?

Shows turn to romance when they run out of ideas but this seemed deliberate and it was implemented in the series flawlessly making it part of the ongoing story and not just a gimmick to keep audiences interested. This and the not in your face progressive approach of social issues were two of the writers' greatest achievements...

They did an exceptional job at Amy and Jake's relationship. Them becoming a couple is timed perfectly. Their journey is long enough to see the build up of their relationship as co-workers but not made too long that it becomes dragging. Their fights as a couple aren't too complicated and is easily solved in one episode. They don't have co-dependency, they're both individualistic and they can both function in separate scenes. They're literally the best on-screen couple.

More of Hollywood need to look at Brooklyn Nine Nine as a way to do diversity correctly. A majority of the main cast are actors of color and yet that is never the sole characteristic that makes these characters who they are. Yeah there are episodes that talk about identity, difficulties of being who they are, but that is never the sole purpose to their characters.
Terry is an anxious sergeant who can't control his team with blends of liking non masculine things yet hilariously being as strong and fit as he is. Amy is a neurotic perfectionist who because she was the only daughter in a family of brothers always feels like she has to be more than she is. Rosa is a tough as nails and near cold blooded woman who doesn't really understand the point of emotions but it never stops her from still being there for her friends when they need it. And Captain Holt is a stone faced man who will never smile and yet he's commonly seen as the best part of the show because he's smart as a whip and has a sense of humor that brings out some of the best moments on the show. And in addition to that, him being gay is never the sole aspect of his character and is treated like a normal aspect without the show begging for a compliment. Yes it is acknowledged that Holt was discriminated against in his career because he was black and gay, but it still didn't stop him from using his amazing intellect and sharp thinking to get where he is in his career, which is why everyone at the precinct loves and respects him. In addition to that, his marriage to Kevin is incredibly wholesome and the two feel like a very realistic couple with their own problems and things to work through. Each of the characters I've mentioned are all integrated into the show in a way that's smart, well thought out and where the show cannot work unless each of them are there.
All of these characters are so great because the writers were smart enough to actually make them matter to the show. If you want to add more diverse actors to your shows, then that's fine and is a good thing. But you still have to give them good characters and not make it so lazy. Look at Brooklyn Nine Nine as an example of that.

Exactly this. I think they managed to find that fine line where they touched sensitive subjects while not making everything about it. I liked that a lot of Kevin and Holt's bits were not really related to them being gay. I guess the line works differently for everybody and some of my gay friends would like it better if there were full on gay every episode, but for me b99 was perfect.

    • @Iggybart05
      @Iggybart05 Před 5 měsíci +52

I dated a girl who damn near demanded that when gays or minorities were in movies/shows they should be extra highlighted and raised up and i could never get her to see that if you want gay couples to be seen as normal, show them as normal! make all of their interactions normal and not over the top and don't highlight it. when you go over the top that's when it comes off as weird and that weird gets attached to w/e was a part of it.
great example is that stupid line from the dark phoenix movie where they had jennifer lawrence (mystique) comment about changing the team name to X-WOMEN or some nonsense. that doesn't make a girl power statement, it makes the girls look dumb. now go to iron man 2 where we get introduced to black widow, she suits up, goes into a room and absolutely lays waste to like 10 guys while happy is busy fighting one. no comment, she leaves and moves on with the mission and she looks badass because that scene makes it seem like that's just her and who she is.

Jokes or skits that would go uncommented in other more traditional sitcoms are acknowledged by the other characters and reacted to in a very human way. You mean like the character development they completely torpedoed? When they destroyed his character development by having him wrongfully arrest someone without following proper procedure and without proper evidence? Something he would NEVER have done especially after wrongfully being arrested himself. Then committing the act of overstepping and abusing power that Rosa has been guilty of for the entire course of the show. Did you also like they turned Terry into the Koolaid man in the final episode, and turned him into a meme who's only purpose was to run through walls and that was his wrap up. You have to be joking by thinking that the last season made an ounce of sense.
They destroyed a character to push a message. Having a message is fine as long as it fits into the story and doesn't destroy the integrity of the show. The show was terrible after Jake and Amy's wedding and ceased being about meaningful characters and resorted to cheap laughs.

I instantly loved the show. It was one of the few for me that got better each season. You don't find that often. It's rare. If you exclude the final season the show was amazing. But even so, even if the final season wasn't as good as the rest, at least in my opinion, the final episodes of the show were amazing.

For the final season they felt pressured to include covid and Blm stuff as a police show. Just bad timing. Even thwn i dont mind (even appreciate) shows showing that stuff for a couple episodes but the writters made the mistake of making the whole season that too a last season tootally based on a real world event. From the very first episode I instantly knew it was going to be something different and special. And it's funny because we were trained by sitcom cliches to expect certain things, yet Brooklyn Nine-Nine successfully subverted every single one.
I was 100% sure we Jake and Amy's relationship was going to be "will they or will they won't" through most of the show; then they get together and I was already expecting it hit the typical bumps and constantely break up and get back together. I am so glad the showrunners were smart enough to not slip into those pitfalls that dooms most sitcoms.
Jake and Amy actually having a functional relationship is incredibly wholesome and satisfying; the conflict of their relationship is trying to find time for themselves between work, and it's never played like the end of the world. And the show never makes their relationship a focus. They get together. they're happy, and the show goes on with other themes.

This show was the perfect amount of comedy and what some people call "wokeness". Where other comedy sitcoms steer clear of controversial subjects like racism and homophobia, I love that B99 was able to take them on in a very down to Earth way. I loved the show through its entire run. And I really held on to the point of "subversion", cause this show subverted a lot of expectations. Look no further than the numerous cold openings that I still remember fondly. Everyone knows the "Backstreet Boys" one, where Jake humorously uses "I want it that way" to ID a perp, before we find out the guy killed someone. Charles dressing up as a turkey and gobbling it up before learning he had to inform some family members of a dead missing relative.
The one that always stuck out was saving Private Pidgeon and getting it out of the station, where Jake has this Rube Goldburg plan to scare the bird out, before immediately sucking it into a fan, feathers and pigeon everywhere.

Adoption is not controversial enough to warrant a mention in this video. Just being a latina straight policewoman isn't controversial enough either so this video omitted both Amy and Boyle.
This video kinda reminded me why I didn't enjoy the series past season 5. It nailed why it was good at the start and up to season 5 though. It was the moderation in which it included controversial topics, where they didn't encapsulate the whole character's identity. This theme of the show was lost somewhere along the way.

Brooklyn Nine Nine is one of my favorite shows. I adored how it approached not just the main characters and main relationships and friendships but it developed the minor roles so well that you thoroughly knew who they were whether it was Charle's ex wife or the Vulture as well as developing the minor relationships just well like Jake and Kevin Cozner. It's another quirky show from two writers who treat their characters like human beings and let that drive the story.

One of the oddest things about B99: the cast is very diverse, but they come in four very-similar pairs. One of the most interesting relationships to me was Boyle and Jake. Jake is stereotypically cool and Boyle is older, weirder, and not as a cool. But Jake is often a very good friend to Boyle and secretly seems to enjoy a big chunk of the stuff they do together despite it being different from what he would normally be associated with. And Boyle is a good investigator, despite his often intense oddness.
Tbf, every character gets a chance to shine on B99. The ending was bittersweet; you could tell the show runners wanted to end the show in the wake of the BLM movement and the increasing awareness of police brutality. Its a shame but they tried hard to cap off everything with a few good stories, and then a bittersweet ending for Jake and the team.

The thing I like most about B99 is that the characters are very real in ways that other shows neglect. They have hobbies and passions unique to them and the rest of the group might find the hobbies themselves boring but enjoy and admire the passion that comes with those hobbies. People may not love Amy's organisation skills and hobbies for their own past time but they enjoy seeing her be the best they know at that hobby. They might find a lot of Charle's food choices and palette gross but they also know he is the best cook among them and knows the best place to have dinner. They are hobbies that real people have and the writter's don't shy away from creating characters that love hobbies that might be seen as boring or uninteresting because that's how people in real life act. They are characters written with defining features that have nothing to do with how they connect with others, their sexuality or relationships and it's refreshing to see.

Another subtle twist in the pilot was that Peralta underestimated Holt because he became a captain at a late age, so he didn't respect his rules because he was sure he knew better. When he knew he managed to be a captain DESPITE being gay and black in a time where prejudice was more common, it made him realize that the man knew what he was doing, and that Holt had to be really good to even be ACCEPTED as a captain. Also, Jake being the last to connect the dots was a humble reminder that while he's good, he doesn't have all the answers, so he needs to work with others, and from that episode he always wore a tie in the station.

They just painted the cops (the main characters themselves) as the bad guys and were probably forced to change the entire script to fit the BLM movement.
Even though the series always treated matters of race with respect (or when comedy was involved it was not degrading) - that last season seemed forced, especially the first few episodes of that season - and that finale didn't sit well with me for some reason. Its like they were forced to cancel it because the image and respect of the police was gone and the makers wanted to avoid controversy.
Also all the post-Gina Gina cameos were really weird. The Gina send-off with the gold statue was great, but the celeb Gina ruined it.

The flattest set of arcs was probably Hitchcock and Scully and their relationship to the others. Even that worked perfectly because that was the exception, not the rule. And them being so one-dimensional (though even that's not entirely true) made them a unique comic relief within a show that's already a comedy.
