How Brooklyn Nine-Nine PERFECTLY Balances Comedy With Drama

  • As Brooklyn Nine-Nine approaches it's final season, it's hard to look back and find just one perfect episode. That's because Brooklyn Nine-Nine has been one of the most consistent comedies on TV for years. Andy Samberg's procedural comedy is beloved by many, and we'll all be sad once it's off the air. NINE-NINE!

    There's also a ton of character and depth that doesn't actually get directly acknowledged in-show, but it's pretty clear that the writers intended it. Holt was always a bit of a stickler for the rules, but he became so obsessed with it because he had to. His superiors in the 80s would have taken any excuse to fire him and Holt worked hard to avoid that. The show is very much about him learning to trust and interact with his colleagues as a human. He spends a lot of time still afraid that some of his friends will still want to destroy him because he is black or gay.

      it makes me so happy that other people think this deeply about a sitcom. truly this show is one of the best on TV right now. the emotional depth is what makes it work, it's what makes so many great sitcoms work, and when it's lacking it's what makes them fail. I knew from the two emotional beats of the pilot that this was something special. The reveal that Holt is gay added higher stakes and the realization that Jake has about teamwork and wearing a shirt and tie means they will focus on growth. love this show so much!

      Also the unproblematic jokes behind it. Most comedy shows base off their humor of either racist, sexist, homophobic or transphobic jokes but Brooklyn 99 is funny without being problematic which differs it from shows like friends, how I met your mother or new girl

      @@Nisha-tt6ro The show definitely has some problematic jokes, specifically surrounding mental health disorders. Like Amy’s line “I’m a little OCD” which plays off OCD as perfectionism. Also the episode “The Therapist” where a lot of the scenes use Dissociative Identity Disorder (which they refer to as Multiple Personality Disorder, an outdated term) is used as the butt of a joke. While I do agree Brooklyn 99 has done a great job handling certain topics. Female sexual assault, racism, sexism, adoption, etc. It is not without its flaws, such as the criticised areas mentioned, as well as Gina’s sexual harassment directed towards Terry during the first few seasons.

    The guitar goes back to a season 1 episode, in which Peralta has hastily and without proof aprehended a suspect (Btw Kid Cudy does a great job here) so he has to obtain a confession or evidence before 48 hours.
    So Amy says: What's your plan? Annoy him until confesses?
    Then quick cut to peralta doing the same bad guitar and screaming. Next scene, peralta is going back to the team saying "It didn't work"
    So, whats funny about that? Clearly annoy someone until confeses is a tool that Peralta still has under his arsenal.

    for me Brooklyn 99 is something I watch while gaming, eating, before going to sleep etc, but when I landed on this episode i was torn away. You described technically exactly what I felt watching it. I watched the episode twice in a row because I think it's been months or maybe years since I found something so simple and deep at the same time.

    I finished watching Bojack Horseman a couple months ago and remember being so down and depressed by its finale. It has become my favourite animated series, I can’t explain how a “comedy” show is so deep and existential. I thought it would be a perfect topic for one of your videos, because of how good your analysis are. I really hope you could dedicate a video to it, really love your channel ❤️

    • @Magidex

      I'm going to say something, and maybe this will help you.
      Bojack was a piece of shit to EVERYONE around him, including those he professed to care about.
      And in the end, they all severed ties.
      You never know when one shitty thing you do without thinking might be someone else's last straw with you.
      ***BE KIND***
      It won't always cause people to treat you better, but take it from me. You are only in control of yourself.
      And it's so much easier to sleep at night.

    What made this episode so special is that the interrogation room was darker. It's usually dim but this is just whole darkness in the corners, only focused on the suspect and police. It gives me the vibe of how serious and intelligent the dentist is, and how difficult the case was gonna be bc of him.

  • @jshell
    @jshell Před 2 lety +129

    I am surprised the video doesn’t mention “Homicide: Life on the Streets”. An excellent police drama from the 90s featuring Braugher. Set in Baltimore and based on a book by David Simon (creator of The Wire), Braugher was excellent in that series. And there is an early episode which is pretty much the same concept as this one - all set in the interrogation room. Featuring Braugher and his partner. It is incredible television. For many of us who were huge fans of Homicide, it’s been a delight to see Braugher in this role in Brooklyn 99. And, nicely, he’s a rather different character than his Homicide counterpart. Oh man. But I highly recommend tracking down that show. The conversations between Braugher and partner played by Kyle Secor are brilliant. But! Anyways, there were a few of us old Homicide fans that were excited to see this episode of 99. It feels like a possible tribute to a legendary episode of an underrated series also featuring Braugher. Aside from the general conceit the episodes play out differently, rather than having a Braugher re-create the older episode.
    If the episode can be found (I am not sure if the Homicide series is easily accessible these days), it would be interesting to do a feature on it and compare.

    • @MatthewBaron
      @MatthewBaron Před 2 lety +5

      Sadly, Homicide is tough to find online. But this episode was a direct homage to"Three Men and Adena", the fifth episode of the first season which is a pure bottle episode set in "The Box" that has arguably never been topped by any police procedural.

    I wouldn't say this episode is the best - I prefer the earlier ones better - but just like the episode's structure explained in the video, its place in the series is a moment to take a breath from the "usual" plot lines/episodes. If that kind of episodes were more frequent, they would be part of the series' idea/approach/tenet, and wouldn't stand out. Also I felt like the quality the show had slightly started to go down from that season - yet much slower than most sitcoms at this stage - so having this episode kind of reaffirming the strengths of the show at that point felt really fresh.

When it first aired and B99's future at the time was unknown, I felt that if this had been moved to the end of the season to be their final episode after all of the story arcs had concluded, I would have been happy. It is just such an fantastic episode in terms of the the comedy, the Holt and Jake's relationship, and the drama B99 holds. I remember falling out of my seat laughing when the chair hit Jake. Dude, I just watched that episode for the first time right now, I've been rewatching the entire series and catching up on all the stuff I missed, and it was amazing.
    I absolutely loved that it's entirely Holt and Peralta based taking place entirely in the Interrogation Room. The chemistry between the two officers being slowly broken down by Philip, and that fucking crescendo of monologuing at the very end before Philip snaps was incredible. Sterling killed it there, you can tell exactly what he's thinking, "Oh goddammit, I just confessed!"
    I love episodes like this, and it's the same reason why I love the episodes Coral Palms Part 1 and The Big House Part 1. They're mostly focused on one storyline and take little time focusing on different things. It's refreshing to have a simple direct Plot A story without any other B's or C's.
    Brooklyn Nine-Nine is a gem with so much passion put behind it.

    Your point about resting and taking time from the comedy reminds me of what makes jazz music so great. Knowing how to use pauses is as important as knowing how to add notes, and creating tension (going off the harmony) is fundamental before resolving it (going back to the harmony). It's easy to create a cookie cutter pop song, where everything is nice and according to the formula, but very hard to properly create and resolve tension.
