Getting Turned around on Mt Rainier | Disappointment Cleaver

  • We attempted to Climb Mt. Rainier on June 14th, 2021. We decided to climb up the Disappointment Cleaver Route, which is basically the standard route that most people use to climb Mt. Rainier. My plan was to climb to the summit in one push, so I started at about 9 or 10pm and then I met up with my friends who were camping out at Camp Muir. From there we followed the guides up to Disappointment Cleaver. When we got past the Disappointment Cleaver, the guides started to turn around because it had snowed the day before the snow bridge had filled in a little bit more and they made the decision that it was too dangerous for their clients. That seems to be the story of Mt. Rainier, sometimes you are able to summit and sometimes you are not. So we had to make a decision, were we going to go up on our own, or were we going to turn around. Watch the edit to see what we decided to do.

Mt. Rainier is located in Mt. Rainier National Park in Washington State. It is the highest peak in Washington standing at 14,411 feet. The climb starts at Paradise, Washington, and then you make your way up to Muir Snowfield, after that you will get to Camp Muir, and then you will make your way up to Disappointment Cleaver.
Disclaimer, if you want to attempt Mt. Rainier, I would definitely suggest roping up as you can fall into a crevasse. Also, looking back, if you have doubts on your ability to climb up because you fear falling into a crevasse, don't be embarrassed to turn around, there is no shame. The mountain will always be there and you can always go back when you are more prepared.

When the weather is like that, it takes a lot more toughness to turn around than keep going. You didn't pansy out! You made the right call, and I'm thankful you posted it on the web for people to see. The danger goes up dramatically when you don't have the professionals marking the way for you. Strong work!

HA! It was for sure nice to ski down it instead of walking, also it was in June so we beat the sun cup glacier madness that you get in August.

The ski down looks so fun 😂😂😂 better than walking down. I have never walk up a mountain and was into these type of adventures. But skiing looks so fun

Those insane clouds rushing over the mountain at 1:10 is the snowstorm we were climbing through! Can't wait to go do this again and hit the summit. No regrets. Your descent looks so much more fun than ours was, lol.

Watching the ski down was the best part! Lol Did that bridge ever get fixed do you know? I want to hike the peak of Mount Rainier in 2023 with a guided group. Skiing ⛷️ down makes me want to go even more. I was just planning to hike it, skiing adds an extra awesomeness to the experience 😎. I came to this video from your friends video.
