MOUNT RAINIER | Ice Climbing the Kautz and Descending the Disappointment Cleaver

- We returned to Mount Rainier for a second time on the more challenging Kautz Route. This route ascends from paradise on the southern side to Ice Climb the Kautz Ice Chutes, which were rated WI-2 as of late June, 2023. It was our first experience with glacier travel as a party of two, and it definitely it was a bit nerve-wracking. On the final 700 feet on the upper Nisqually we got hit hard by altitude and fatigue, but pushed on to the summit. Between the rough night before and the extra pack weight, this experience was 100% type II fun.

This was great. I liked it a lot. Loved it that you guys showed us what it was like coming down. NO climbing vids ever do that!
I took a couple of friends from work up the Kautz in 1980 when it was still mostly hard snow and only a ten foot step of ice. Even crossing the Nisqually was trivial. The original Camp (Joe) Hazard was still in use. It's a much different route now. I wished I had done Liberty too.
You fellows make it look like easy… strong work! Way to crush it!
Damn son, you wild!
Nice man, I summitted in a whiteout and hurricane winds back in May, you guy's won the weather lottery
That sounds intense! We're the winds whipping the whole time or did it hit on the upper nysqually? Thanks it was pretty mint
Nice push and a very good video presentation of the route. I did the Kautz 3 years ago in early July in excellent weather. Fun times!
Thanks! That's great that you did the route. How was the ice in July?
@@willindsey It was a couple of weeks after the infamous 2021 heat dome that cooked Western WA in late June (so I guess it was 2 years ago, not 3). We were still in a pretty significant heat wave when we went up, and the hot conditions left the Kautz chute pretty much bare ice all the way up. I was surprised how little "dinner plating" there was. We didn't have to fight the ice too much - it was pretty easy to get a good stick, even if you had to strike a couple of times. I think there's normally a fair amount more snow at that time of summer most years.
Awesome video. Thanks!
Thank you! Glad you liked it
Yesssssss
Great video! Planning on the Kautz this season myself. Also, what are those orange mammut pants? The full side zip looks great!
Thanks! Awesome and have fun on the route! The pants are Mammut Nordwand hs
❤ beautiful amazing ! well done . 🎉 quick question which nose mask you are using ?
Thank you! I'm using the beko 2012. Pretty affordable and available online
Go do Liberty Ridge, get away from the crowds.
It's on the list! Have you done it?
I climbed that in flip flops last summer. Whats with the weapons and chainmail.
brought them up for extra training weight, if you train hard enough you'll be able to do it someday!
Prosthetic noses need work.
