The FIFTY - 43/50 - Skiing the Biggest Mountain in AB, in a total Whiteout

  • Mt. Columbia sits atop the hydrological apex of North America and is the highest mountain in Alberta, Canada. The difficulties of climbing and skiing it don't come in the form of technical steeps or scary exposure, but more from the marathon of a ski tour it takes to get to its base and timing a perfect weather window in a zone known for instantaneous weather changes and blinding whiteouts.

Why did I get chills when Cody was talking about the triple continental divide? I will tell you why and it's the same reason I love watching this project. Cody is obviously out here doing some wild and hard shit, but the fact that he takes the time to learn about the places he goes and connect deeply, well, I just have so much respect for that. He embodies the journey. He is not just some egomaniac out there to prove something to a community of outdoor enthusiasts. I don't know you Cody, but you just seem like a genuinely good human. Thank you for speaking on the severity of what losing these incredible places to over consumption means. 7 more to go!

@@jjns3991624 This view you have is problematic. This is the problem. Not Cody doing this project. Individual people are allowed to live their lives. You will never be perfect. All you can do is develop an awareness and make small changes in your everyday life that over time will make an impact. For example, at home I compost all of my food scraps to make soil for my garden and house plants. I am very aware of my plastic use and strive to buy glass. I wash glass containers out and use them for storage. I collect rainwater (and snow melt) and use it to water my garden and my plants. I try my darndest to buy local fruits, vegetables, meat and eggs. I could go on, but I will stop here and say this. I am a materials and metallurgical engineer with a MASc degree. I have spent 12 years studying biobased materials. I developed a biobased plastic out of lignin, a waste product in the paper and pulping industry. I have worked in agriculture developing sustainable materials for improved crop yield. Now, my focus is on policy and decarbonization methods. And this is what I have to say, for all my education, for all my knowledge, the pressure needs to be put on corporations, multi-gazillion dollar corporations. They are the ones over consuming. They are the ones wrapping everything in petroleum based plastic and unnecessary materials. Corporate greed and capitalism are the problem. Advertising this dream that the more shit you own the happier you will be. Sustainability means returning production to communities and advertising we all NEED less. Cody driving his van to hang out in Canada for a few months and do some self-powered ski lines is not causing the climate change massacre we are currently going through. It is the system we live under. I have developed severable viable materials that could be used to replace carcinogenic pollutants, but the United States government won't let them through. Why? Because of $$$$. I am going to repeat this one more time, for those of you in the back.....point the finger at corporate and governmental greed (which is one in the same). Stop blaming the individual working class who is just trying to live his/her life.

@@jjns3991624 the carbon footprint of an individual or any collection of individuals is extremely negligible compared to that of many major industries and corporations. Besides, there is an argument to be made that his footprint is more than offset by the awareness he brings to such problems while showcasing the beauty and power of the mountains, and the influence that has on the decisions of many of us who have been entertained by this series. Could he do more to reduce his footprint? Sure. However, pointing at Cody as some sort of hypocrite for discussing climate issues while using as many resources as he does over the course of working on this project is rather shortsighted.

Important message on the melting of the glaciers. I live on the Arctic Circle in Norway and it’s 50 degrees today. The two feet of snow we had on the ground two days ago is gone. This should be the coldest time of the year. Up in the mountains it’s usually about 0 degrees in February but today it is 38.

Climate change is undeniably supported by science but I want to caution people against saying things like “climate change is real because it’s hot today in the Arctic in the winter.” That’s easily rebuttable by climate deniers saying “well it was cold today in the summer near the equator.” It confuses weather with climate and doesn’t actually support climate change. Climate is what the weather is over time - so the data you need to cite needs to be collected over time, not citing a specific day. The data is real and exists, I’m not denying that, I’m just saying this is a weak argument.

We either choose to adapt & adjust now or have adaptation forced upon us by an altered ecosystem in the future. Must've been interesting skiing inside that ping pong ball on the way down. Great to see you having linked up with some local legends on your last episodes including Kevin, Taylor and of course Doug!

Was up in Banff this last 4th of July, didn’t make it that far north. Will need to revisit in the winter for sure.
Skiing Columbia is on my Bucket list.

Way to slay in a day. We did it as a 2 dayer and your tactics were definitely the better way to go. We were still siege tactics back in the 90's. 50 lb packs across the hundred football fields of whiteout sucked hard.

That pro-move of layering under the shell was incredible! 10:30
Also what is the back story of teaming up with Taylor? You guys long time friends ? 3:24

FYI, the Saskatchewan River flows into Lake Winnipeg and then out the Nelson into Hudson's Bay. Not the Atlantic Ocean as stated. But yes still an impressive 3 way divide!

There are some fantastic hikes (or ski tours during the winter) in kananskis, not far from Calgary where you can look on the continental divide.

Stoked for another great episode but sucks to know its coming to an end. Cheers on such a big accomplishment. You probably don't remember this but you were traveling a few years back in Seattle in the Van and you had a brake light out, rolled down my window to let ya know.

Anyone else notice how efficient Taylor’s skinning technique is on the approach/uphill?

    • @CodyTownsend

So smooth and efficient. I will say, also aided by extraordinarily light and walkable boots and stupid light skis.

Where I ski is about two hours north of Prince George BC or four hours southwest of Grande Prairie AB you might thumb your nose at it because the elevation isn't like the lines you ski but the snow is phenomenal. The area also has a very unique watershed called the Rocky Mountain Trench that drains into Williston Lake that is a few hundred kilometers long and the headwaters of the Findlay River going to the Pacific and the Peace River going to the Arctic Ocean .
