The Spit Healing of Jesus: The Mark Series part 25 (Mark

  • Jesus put His fingers in a man’s ears and His spit in the man’s mouth. Do you know what it means? We will cover the deep theological meaning behind this act and also deal with some critical objections to the reliability of Mark. Critics say that Mark doesn’t understand the geography of Israel because of Mark 7:31. Some will even say that Jesus is copying pagan rituals when He heals this way. Well, that’s silly and I’d like to share why.
Mark 7:31-37 (NASB95)Again He went out from the region of Tyre, and came through Sidon to the Sea of Galilee, within the region of Decapolis. They brought to Him one who was deaf and spoke with difficulty, and they implored Him to lay His hand on him. Jesus took him aside from the crowd, by himself, and put His fingers into his ears, and after spitting, He touched his tongue with the saliva; and looking up to heaven with a deep sigh, He said to him, “Ephphatha!” that is, “Be opened!” And his ears were opened, and the impediment of his tongue was removed, and he began speaking plainly. And He gave them orders not to tell anyone; but the more He ordered them, the more widely they continued to proclaim it. They were utterly astonished, saying, “He has done all things well; He makes even the deaf to hear and the mute to speak.”

    Interesting sermon.
The most important thing to understand about Jesus Christ, is that he knows each and every one of us better than we know ourselves.
When you read through all four Gospels, Jesus NEVER healed people the same way - there is no single healing method or one-fits-all methodology he used.
His main focus is ALWAYS on the disposition of a person's heart, and, whenever He encountered sin, he dealt with it, and always forgave repentant sinners.
    Amen

In my high trust in self and low faith, God healed me through something conceivable to me that I was already on the way to figuring out.
The METHOD He used (words of knowledge and instructing me through physically doing my own therapy) was based on what I believed in that moment. It was according to my faith that He healed me, and by His healing my faith has grown so much!

I had to come and search for your Mark study after I heard another hyper charismatic pastor's "explanation" on Jesus's healing of the blind man in Mark. I don't really listen to this pastor, but someone else I follow mentioned him. Very recent, said pastor tried "replicating" this miracle on someone on stage and said God's message here is that "God is testing our physical, spiritual and emotional strength to receive His blessing, even if it's in a gross manner". I'm paraphrasing here, but I couldn't listen to more, and really had to search for a sound doctrinal explanation. Thank you Pastor Mike for this video and pt. 28 which I also listened to. Jesus compares her to a dog and says that His mercy is primarily directed to the Jewish people. All others are secondary. I don't think that is such a Holy thing to do. It doesn't make sense when God considers a particular group of people as his own and another group as 'outsiders'. I don't think God is a racist. If we agree with such a logic, then the newly converted people would be inferior to the believers. And that would make God partial. And considering that fact that God was silent when thousands of Jews were tortured and killed by Hitler, we can clearly come to the conclusion that Jewish people are not the dearest people to God.

Thanks again, Mike. This is the first time I've heard any explanation, and "apologetic" for the geographical puzzle in Tyre-Sidon-Galilee-Decapolis journey of Jesus in Mark 7. Two questions: (1) how might this also connect with their going to Caesarea Philippi and the Messianic declaration of Peter in this very ancient gentile city of "Panares"? (2) Might Mark, and the synoptic writers be describing the overall journeys of Jesus as Christ's intentional outlining the ancient great kingdom of David ("the Jews first"--including both Judea and Israel), yet also his inclusion of the gentiles of Syro-Phoenicia, Eastern Galilee, and the Decapolis ("and also the Gentiles"). Obviously, this is broadly interpretive given my post-resurrection theological "lens", but all of the Gospels, and Paul, were written with similar lenses. The key, as you suggest, is the Cross, the Resurrection, and the coming of the Holy Spirit "to guide us into all Truth". Blessings and Peace+

The only account I could think of is in Numbers 12:14 But the LORD said to Moses, “If her father had only spit in her face, would she not be put to shame for seven days? Have her shut outside the camp for seven days, and afterward she may be received again.” Would there be a connection of some sort, like the spit of Jesus heals, and the spit of man makes one unclean? Maybe I'm not understanding Numbers 12:14 right, but is she considered unclean because of the spit? Or because of the sinful actions that would lead her to be spit on?

I wonder if you could speak about (or if you have already spoken about) the time Jesus prayed for the blind guy twice because after the first time the people looked like trees. Is there a theological reason Jesus prayed twice for the guy? I have heard explanations that are not satisfactory to me and would like your opinion. Thanks.

Is this applicable? Mt And they took offense at Him. But Jesus said to them, “Only in his hometown and in his own household is a prophet without honor.” 58And He did not do many miracles there, because of their unbelief. // Mark 8:23
So He took the blind man by the hand and led him out of the village (b/c of faith like he cleared the mourners out of the room when healing the little girl). Then He spit on the man's eyes and placed His hands on him. "Can you see anything?" He asked.

    • @Adam-ox6zy
      @Adam-ox6zy Před 3 lety

This may help: Another reason to believe this man was a gentile is because it was his ears that were unstopped (miracles are not just recorded that we might wonder at them but for their deeper spiritual meanings too as well as prove that Jesus is messiah to the people then). The gentiles in effect had not heard the gospel (viz the Heb scripture Aka OT) but the blind man Jesus healed was a Jew. They had heard the gospel but had been blind to its fulfilment in the man standing before them. And also note the two stage miracle to heal the blind man, when Jesus could so easily do it in one. Natural Israel as a nation will need the return of Jesus to recognised him as messiah. These two men healed were examples of the two groups -Jew and gentile- and their respective need.

The woman who suffered from bleeding probably knew Malachi 4:2 "But for you who fear my name, the sun of righteousness shall rise with healing in his wings. And you will go free, leaping with joy like calves let out to pasture."
The Hebrew word 'kanaph' means borders, as in hem of a robe, but is also found in Exodus 19:4 where it is translated as wings, as in, "You have seen what I did to the Egyptians, and how I bore you on eagle's wings, and brought you to myself."
Therefore when the woman reached out and touched the hem of Jesus' robe, she was reaching of for His 'wings' to which because she believed that He was the 'sun of righteousness' she would find healing.

33:50 I bet the reason Jesus didn’t have a “method” to his healings was deliberately to prevent others who come after to “codify the method” and basically turn it into another idol type thing.

Scripture says Jesus spat and touched his tongue. Not that he put spit on his finger and touched his tongue. therefore no bacteria being transferred. I liked the fact that touching his ears and tongue would be from the mans perspective.

Andy Smith Im interested as well ,I know some Christians will only use the talmud for cultural context like Dr.Brown . But on the other hand Ive seen quotes of it saying things like Jesus is boiling and using a derogatory’s to refer to him .

Aaron Rabago The Talmud was written by many different ancient Jewish scholars. It is used by Christians for cultural context, like you said. It also contains information about the Trinity before Christianity existed and some other useful info for apologetics. While it has some anti-Jesus and anti-Christian commentary, this does not detract from its usefulness in other areas.

Andreas erik I hope you’re not saying all Jews are from their father, the devil. That would be pretty embarrassing for you. If you’re saying that try reading the passage again. The whole chapter. Then you’ll see the context.

I think there is a link to the laws of impurity. Touching deseased people made you impure. With Jesus it's the other way around. Touching Jesus or being touched by him made them pure, whole and healed.

Re: 7:31 - "put His fingers into his ears",
One commentary explained that because the man could not hear, Jesus used His own form of sign language to tell the man that He was going to heal him of deafness.
"...after spitting, He touched his tongue."
"Also another form of sign language in which Jesus offered the man hope for restored speech."

Another reason to believe this man was a gentile is because it was his ears that were unstopped (miracles are not just recorded that we might wonder at them but for their deeper spiritual meanings too as well as prove that Jesus is messiah to the people then).
