    Wisely said. This video actually adresses one of the biggest issues in the game. Tree progress and obtaining a "good-statistically" aircraft that you actually have next to no idea how to fly vs progressing your personall skills, learning,becoming better and most importantly having FUN. Thanks Jengar for bringing this up/reminding us all. Its sad how many new players get furstrated because they are approaching the whole "grind" issue from a perspective that in the end ruins their skill and fun.

      Elias Lens true that but what I despise is when new players in b17s and u kill em in ur k4 with a 30mm cannon, complains and calls u no skill and says ur op and send l2p nonsense. I usually laugh cause either ik they are new or they just play bombers alot and don't know what a fighter can do. Now that I think.of it I'mma use my fw190 a8 to hunt bombers :)

      Godxilxhero the game can feel extremely unfair to newer players, not to say it actually is. I usually try to cut them some slack; I have much more issue with experienced players who have no excuse.

      So much truth and wisdom in Jengar's words. I have often found myself guilty of some of the things you have talked about. (Not being toxic or pulling dubious tactics, but just getting burned out because of not focusing on the short term/long term of improving as a pilot). I hope to take what you have said to heart and really improve myself. Thank-you for saying these things in a way that drove it home to me.

    Wise words indeed. The other problem with grinding using a premium plane or single plane with Talisman, is that you end up with a daunting tech tree of stock planes and an even BIGGER grind spading stock planes. It is actually nicer to spade as you go and enjoy:
    1) The 130% bonus on researching the following plane.
    2) Learning to fly all sorts of planes as you go.
    This way the tech tree unlocks with barely a thought.

    No joke. I get so irritated grinding but I was playing my t 34-57 today and I normally get arround 9-12 kills on a match every game and I didn't realize that today I earned over 50 thousand rp towards my T-44-100 I haven't had this much fun in months honestly. When I was working my ass off during the Christmas quests for the ersatz m10 I hated and dreaded getting on daily but I wanted it so I did. Recently I have been grinding for the tiger that's coming but it's such a pain and not fun I just put up WT and played far cry 5 because I was furious. My tip to y'all is don't focus only on the objective you want wether it's a vehicle or rare event or challenge. Just be yourself and have fun. I love my T-34-57 and it's so fun clicking and watching my shell cut through a tank like butter. Just have fun.

    I compeletely agree with all of the tips about grinding the trees. I got to 5.7 Germany aircraft quite quickly, but i never quite knew how to really fly the planes, so i sucked quite a bit and thought they were bad. Luckily i didnt rant or post anything about my experiences cuz atleast at that point i knew i was bad. Ive actually explored the other tech trees like Russia and France and had a go at their planes and i ultimately learned from experience how to properly play certain vehicles. Of course, your videos helped alot when figuring out playstyles of certain vehicles that i had no idea how to play (like the 109 K4).
    I finally revisited the K4 today after so long and i had a blast with it. Also, is there a fighter that you do recommend for Russia at BR 4.0 and above? I like the Yak 9u so far since it is fast and climbs rather well. However, i dont know if i just havent played it enough or what, but its kind of hard for me to nail the playstyle and ive been getting quite aggrivated, because you know how Russian teams are at the lower tiers.

    I learned the lesson you’re trying to teach in this vid the hard way with the german planes boss. I got rather good at the game (good enough to join your squadron anyway) but in my haste to get to things like the Ta-152 and the jets I failed to learn the lessons that the mid tier fighters teach. This applies to other trees as well and once I got to those high br planes I got a hard reality check being forced to play the lower tiers more actually paying attention to improving myself skill and tactics wise. Then that led to me getting burned out and my current hiatus

    • @Biggles266
      @Biggles266 Před 6 lety

      I have learned -- oh! so slowly! -- that you can never get to the bases before the enemy fighters unless it's cloudy all the way or it's a huge map like Normandy.
      I've also learned that fighters who want to escort you are in fact few and far between even when asking for them and circling back, though I have recently been in a few matches where the team spirit is in play and we do in fact all defend the bomber(s).
      So I take the indirect approach. Climb -- oh! so slowly! -- and take the other three sides of the square instead of the direct route. Even then, chances are someone is still at altitude over the bases.

    It is about the journey, not the destination.
    Don't despair the "grind", appreciate how many hours of game-play you have to look forward to before running out of goals.
    I have never found another game with the potential to exclusively hold my interest for years at a time, and I am not even close to running out of options in this game.
    Play it slow, learn to play, get good, then advance to higher tiers.
    Grinding for a top tier plane that you haven't learned to fly along the way just leads to disappointment and frustration.

    • @jengar6258
      @jengar6258  Před 5 lety

      Absolutely Jon, thats the right mindset :)

  • @briansun5652
    @briansun5652 Před 6 lety +2

    Also, in a way I sometimes encourage that someone just try to grind up to jets without premium if they have the time, and then fly planes of all sorts and from all tiers for a while. That way, you are encouraged to learn proper flying in order to get more kills and grind faster, and you will learn a lot in addition to getting to your end goal.
    When I started the game, I wanted the Meteor F3 super badly, so I learned all sorts of tactics such as boom and zoom and energy fighting to give me a leg up on the opposition and speed up the non premium grind. When I got to the Meteor, I realized that I what I enjoyed the most wasn't getting the plane itself; what I enjoyed the most was being a step above the average War Thunder player who just dives into a furball and turns their brain off to try and get kills. And in the end, just like you said, I enjoyed the game even more because of that.

    • @jengar6258
      @jengar6258  Před 6 lety

      Wel done Brian, this is the way to do it, although im far from opposed to spend money on these types of games, als long as your own progression is central!

    Sage advice. Of course we like to think: "if I just had a better plane..." The realization that our skills are the problem doesn't come easy. Personally, I raced to get a Bf-109, an FW-190, and that D5 Ju-87 :). Well I did that in fairly short order but I wasn't quite the master of the sky I thought I would be, in fact, I sucked. However I did notice that when flying other nations' planes I was holding my own against the competition; at least I was getting kills and sometimes surviving the entire game with one plane. Now I knew it wasn't the fault of my German planes as I could see them being very successful in competition. So the problem was the my skill and the level of competition. With my German planes I was flying in a much higher BR and much of the competition at that level was higher skilled, while flying in lower BR battles was a more level playing field for my experience. And the answer was, as pointed out in this video, I just ground the Luftwaffe too fast for my own good ;) Now I grind with a more sane progression and spade the plane I have before moving up and of course I make frequent use of helpful videos like Jengar's. Having a lot more fun...

    Great video, thanks for making this. One big thing for me was to say bollocks to war bonds. The missions make you do very specific things that will more often than not be nonsensical in a given battle. I've had so much more success as a pilot ever since I stopped paying attention to the daily tasks.

    People say Premium planes arn't pay to win. -___- Those planes get 2x RP and .5x SL's for buying aircraft.
    In higher tiers if you're not netting atleast 2 kills a match without premium, you will literally go negative in silver lions from ammo costs and plane repairs. Which means you cant even buy the new plane you just spent 20 hours grinding.

    Heh. Grinding the Italian tree is fun - early planes are easy to fly, and it takes a couple of afternoons of good games to unlock the MC202EC, which is absolutely amazing. Then, you can learn how to properly energy fight against human players while you wait to unlock the 205 and G55.

    Rushed all german plane tree with He-219, have all the planes, now I wanna spade all of them. The problem with the rushing is that you get good only in the plane you are rushing in... Even tho i was always getting at least one or 2 kills in the start of the game, my winrate is positive with that plane. As you said, you do get alot of rp but it doesn't make you a greater pilot in any way, those who rush to get their jets usually endup by quitting war thunder, because they think top tier is the easiest tier...I agree 100% with you on this topic. I agree.
    I played the game years ago, in the patch 1.3 to 1.4 days and I dare say I was not bad when it came to maneuvering and defensive flying, reversals, doing energy traps, making enemies overshoot and all that stuff. Yet, my stats sucked hard. That had two main reasons:
    A: I was a bad shot and often could not turn my successful maneuvering into kills.
    B: I made the mistake to always grind.
    I just couldn't stand the thought of wasting component research points. When I flew a fully spaded plane and did well in it, I wasn't happy, but I was angry over not having used that good match to unlock some stuff on one of the stock planes. I know that doesn't fully make sense, but that is just how I felt. So I always moved on to the next horrible stock grind after finishing the previous one, instead of actually enjoying those fully spaded planes.
    That is something that separated me from the good players.
    They usually fly a plane until they know it like the back of their hand and have a great kill ratio in it, before moving on to the next one.
    I am currently slowly getting back into the game again and this time I will do it like that too.
    Of course, the way that game is set up, with the constant buffs and nerfs and all the new stuff being thrown at the wall only to be nerfed shortly after when it turns out to be too good, creates a strong temptation to make my old mistake of always grinding. You want to have those "flavor of the month" planes and profit from their OP-ness like everybody else, before they nerf them to shit.

      You start out as a victim and you grind and spend money in the hopes of becoming one of the victimizers.
      The bad balancing and many other flaws are deliberately baked into the game because they make people spend money on premium accounts and vehicles, in an attempt to make the game less shitty.

    I agree that you should take your time to learn each vehicle and enjoy the game so that you don’t get burned out. Although I do think that sometimes there are good reasons to grind like a maniac with your best reward earning vehicle. For example: I am using my b-29 with a talisman to grind for the f3d for squadron battles like a maniac before it hits 8.0 haha. And it’s important because my squadron relies on me to be there regularly as CAS. But otherwise you are completely correct and I feel like there are many people who leave this game because they finally get the vehicle they wanted and feel no drive to go on anymore.

    Agreed, after 10 000 hours for me the best game to play within Warthunder is to try master the different levels of skill so Air RB and Tank RB and then good CAS & fighter support in tank RB. I did my time in arcade and still go there with new players I try to get into the game. Whenever I was playing a certain BR aircraft for a nation I was focusing on. I made sure to also fly out opposing nations to get a better idea of the capabilities of the enemy I would encounter. Kinda means I grind out all nations at the same time and makes it slower to get high tier vehicles but on the plus side I never run out of lions.

    Hi Jengar,
    I totally agree with you with regards to the development of a pilot's skill and being unprepared and basically untrained to fly the plane they're grinding for. There is however another route you don't consider, being such a good pilot yourself.
    I don't play to grind; I play to stat-pad. I want to improve my stats in a particular plane, and to keep them good. I have favoured and favourite planes. Favourites are obvious, but favoured planes are those I hold a curious and inexplicable affection for despite them being crap in game -- or perhaps its me being crap in them -- such as the Wellington and Fw200 bombers. There still others I want to do well in but am similarly crap in, such as the Fw 190s and the Mustang Dash-20.
    I also want to do well and actually enjoy flying these planes. As long as I make a fair go of it I am okay taking a defeat, but I totally get triggered by being executed by an unseen B&Zer in 5 seconds of battle time after 5-10 mins spent getting to the battlezone. Similarly, climbing to altitude and finding a 109 or Yak waiting above for me with a head-on which i cannot avoid and again am instakilled.
    Further, these scenarios above add to the untrained nature of a pilot. When you know enough to get to the battle zone but not enough to defend yourself from the first pass and get instakilled, earning less than 100 points of score and having spent 10 minutes doing it, you don't actually learn anything and get frustrated as all hell.
    I've now improved to the point where I am expecting to get a kill every game I am in with planes I am comfortable in, and 2 for planes i am genuinely confident in; getting 2 is a very good mood and 3 kills is cause for celebration and sharing. But in planes I have literally not mastered, going 10-20 matches without a single kill is expected and anticipated.
    This all leads to my problems of frustrated rage-quitting (the game for the night, not a particular match), and the incredibly slow accumulation of Silver Lions and Research Points to upgrade the plane from stock. In that way, this is a massive grind that only "gitting gud' will cure.

    • @jengar6258
      @jengar6258  Před 6 lety +1

      you have to analyse each match why you died. If it is, like you said, killed by an unseen opponent, it means your situational awareness is sub par, an you then need to focus on improving that first. spend a week doing nothing but looking around while climbing. Then after that week check how often you still die by unseen opponents. If thats close to zero move on to the next thing. you cant focus on defensive flying if you die a lot by unseen planes. defensive flying call only start when situational awareness is up to a good lvl.

    • @Biggles266
      @Biggles266 Před 6 lety

      Good advice, thanks. I do look around a lot more than I used to, that's for sure. I am constantly scanning the sky and very much attempting to stay close to allies (within 3km) for mutual support at the start of a match, and in selecting a more isolated opponent to attack. I am also pretty good at finding the unmarked dots of planes ahead of me in the initial confrontation. I was more relating these from a historical point of view that I've managed to get through yet many other players probably still struggle with. This is probably better dealt with on the Defensive flying video, but since I had your attention...
      It's when I'm also occupied at a lower level that this unseen killer is still a major issue. I keep flicking my eyes to the radar and this has saved my plane on numerous occasions as I get to sidestep a plummeting enemy and basically break off my attack to save myself. But what do you do when actively chasing a diving twisting enemy and suddenly you're dead from a stealth ammo burst from a plane your Awareness skill never picked up on and the plane only shows on radar after he's killed you?
      Also, how do you NOT accept a head-on from those Yaks and 109 Fs & Gs? I try to roll and break left or occasionally right around the 1km distance mark, getting my own shot in or not as I think I can get away with or if I think I'll die anyway and trying to get any hits at all. But they can usually track me with ease and get me anyway. Should I not attack at all and break earlier? If so, how early? The centreline guns can effectively shoot out to 2km in a head-on. The only plane I can ever manage a head-on dodge is in a Spitfire. It's not the only plane in the game I get into head-ons with.
      These two are my biggest current problems. Perhaps you could do a tutorial on these subjects?

    I've decided on the tanks and planes I want to aim for.
    Tanks: USA - T95, M103, M60. (Plan on buying the Black cat/Cobra King to help get up to tanks before using normal to get to the rest, Maybe a T29)
    Germany - Maus, Leopard, Jagtiger (plan on buying the Tiger 2 H or RU, possible the mKPz to assist with tanks)
    USSR - T54, IS3 (plan to use the T-34-100 to help out)
    GB - Challenger, Conqueror, Conway (plan on buying either the firefly or the strv to help out also)
    As for planes, I am hoping to go for ones in each line.
    USA - P51 mustang but otherwise not sure on what line to go for but would also like a premium to help out.
    Germany - Ho 229, MiG 15 bis, Sabres, maybe the dive bombers. (not sure what premium)
    USSR: Yaks, Migs, La lines, (but not sure what premium.)
    GB: Spitfires, Hunter F1, would like a premium for sure, again not sure which one.
    Japan: would like to fly the Zeros, wouldn't mind a premium to help out.
    Money isn't really an issue but time is. I'm hoping, with premium tanks/planes as well as boosters and a premium account I will be able to both enjoy the game as i already am doing, as well as experience all the different vehicles within the game. My main goal is to try all the legendary/influential/ well-known machines before moving onto the higher tiers.
    Any help would really be appreciated. Thanks in advance if anybody does help.

      I can assure you I didn't, I'm having fun now playing but would like to get through them a bit quicker and to the ones I want to play the most. I'm having fun playing at the moment and if I get bored I jump to other nations and game modes. I don't do play bombers because I don't find them fun and I bring all my planes up at similar rates and ranks. I don't J out of games to get into another because I don't like that sort of mindset. Whilst I'm playing I'm chatting with people to improve my skill. I don't want to be playing at low ranks and be a skilled player because I then end up ruining newer players fun. I'm currently in tier 3 with the Brits in the Spitfires and loving it. I just want to get the better machines, same with the tanks. I'm a few tiers in but would like to get up to that high-level gameplay and have those better tanks.
      I'm really enjoying the game but just want that bit extra out of it. Like I said, luckily, money isn't a problem at the moment and would like to get to the higher ranks with the aid or premium vehicles and machines. I really want to get to all the historic tanks and ones I really want to play.
      I don't see the point in darting up one line as you will have to do it all again for the others. I've already made my mind up on what I want to work towards, it's just that I want to do that much quicker than normal whilst having fun. Only really get to play on the weekends, granted I don't go out. I'm aiming to get the majority of the main ones I want or the ones that lead up to it so I can be competitive, enjoy the tanks/planes i'm playing and make decent progress.
