  • Dr. Phil discusses the highly debated issue of whether or not the body positivity movement -- a belief system that embraces bodies of all shapes and sizes -- has gone too far. Since 2020, 36.5% of Americans have been considered overweight and 32.5% obese. Are we doing too much to celebrate the plus-sized? Not according to Lexi and her husband, Will, who say they’ve struggled with their body image their entire lives and have now found freedom in letting go of the need to control their weight and instead accepting themselves the way they are. Dr. Phil also meets CZcams personality John Glaude, who says he once believed in the body positivity movement until it almost killed him. Plus, Dr. Howard Liebowitz discusses the medical realities of being overweight, and nutritionist Kelsey Koehler offers tips to set practical goals for weight loss. (21015)

You can't deny the health benefits of getting healthy and losing weight. I was always around 115 lbs, and around 22 I packed on 80 pounds. The way I felt physically was horrible. The changes that happened to my body were horrible. Hygiene was necessary daily. My bowel movements were horrible. I'm 26 now and have lost most of the weight I gained, save about 20 pounds. I feel so much better PHYSICALLY. It has nothing to do with being fat or thin, it was all about how my body felt, and it didn't feel good when I was big.

This whole "beauty at any size" thing is one giant hypocrite soup.
It started with making beauty less important, it was all about self worth without beauty. Beauty in the person sense not the body sense. But that's not how it is. It's still about the physical features.
In our efforts to make it seem like physical beauty doesn't matter we only reveal how terribly important it actually is. When you see comments under the most troll looking woman you've ever seen going "YAS queen" and "omg so gorgeous". All that is revealing is "we can't tell her that she is ugly, because not being beautiful physically is a terrible thing. We should reveal that to her it will ruin her day. It would ruin my day if someone told me I wasn't attractive."
Essentially it's so important to be attractive that we wouldn't want to burden someone with the reality that they aren't.
Thus the word has lost all meaning . if everyone is beautiful then no one is.

Because it is. Being overweight, severely underweight, cutt1ng your skin, partaking in body modifications, being a drug addict, etc - these are all bad things.
They’re bad because it shows a disregard and self-harm toward one’s own body. One’s body is their temple, and should be treated with respect.

As someone who's struggled with my weight my entire life, I think it is always important to accept yourself wherever you are at a particular moment. In other words, at times when I've been at an unhealthy weight, I've always tried to focus on healthy ways of reducing my weight while NOT hating myself for having gained the weight to begin with. After all, caring for yourself is the only way to permanently change your lifestyle.
What I'm troubled by here is that I feel gaslit. On the one hand, this woman is saying something I agree with, that we should all accept ourselves as we are. Accepting oneself where we are, however, does not preclude creating positive lifestyle change. And while I agree that your any individual's lifestyle is, for all intents and purposes, none of our business, when you follow up your shtick about self-acceptance with some hokey science about "fat people are more likely to survive heart attacks," I wonder what your true agenda is.
Further, wouldn't it be more genuine and helpful to say, "I accept myself where I am, even if it's not the healthiest lifestyle." Food addiction is a real thing that kills people all the time, and treating it as though it's a healthy lifestyle is just plain silly and simple, in my opinion. Where's the nuance? Where's the reflection of the complexity of life and psychology in the world of abundance? I think it's important to discuss such things in a manner that looks toward evolution rather than complete surrender to our baser compulsions.

She made me feel like I wasn’t allowed to be openly proud of my weight loss because it was ‘promoting and celebrating diet culture’ when I wasn’t doing that at all, I think people can be beautiful at any size and what they want to do with their body is their choice but being made to feel like that for making my own self feel better didn’t feel good. I have gained a lot of weight back since losing it and am currently in the process of losing it again because I’m terrified of the health affects it could have as I get older and I want to deal with it while im still young. Of course im upset that I’ve gained it back but I feel that body positivity to me is not hating myself for gaining it back, but accepting that it’s happened and just trying again. Because if hating yourself into losing weight worked, it would have worked by now. I recently was in hospital with suspected blood clot in lungs (turned out to be muscle strain) but because I was larger, they ran more tests to make double double sure because it just is a fact that as a larger person, blood clots etc. are more likely and it’s scary and it just doesn’t feel good at all. I think acceptance is one thing and a good thing, but a narrative of health at any size is really dangerous.

Psychology serves every person, and is full of nuances- not just common sense. Dr. Phil, who by the way is not a doctor, fails to realize these nuances within psychology every time. The world is not black and white and Dr. Phil’s elementary way of viewing it that way Is not edgy or in defense of common sense, he simply wants to argue and exploit people for views. His show is extremely exploitative in nature and lacks integrity and does not make any progress. Productive conversations can be held without exploiting people with a different perspective. These are championing to prove that obesity is harmful to health are missing the point. They know the health risks. They know how they are viewed within society. He got a bunch of experts together to scare a fat women into hating herself? How unproductive. How about we have discussions on how an overweight person can productively lose the weight rather than just hear how much they should hate themselves. So stay inside your box of ignorance Renee Santiago.

As a person who has been morbidly obese for multiple decades I am an expert on the subject.... This whole body positivity movement does not speak for most of us. The vast majority of fat people are not trying to push obesity onto other people, we don't care if you find us attractive or not, we're not upset at "diet culture", we do not attack people who choose to lose weight. We would just like to be allowed to live our lives without people making rude comments about our bodies that we didn't ask for. Just leave us alone.

But scientists/doctors can be dead wrong.
Lobotomies were considered the "miracle cure" for homosexuality (at the time, psychiatrists considered this to be an unhealthy condition), sexual promiscuity (same diagnosis as homosexuality), odd behavior was treated with lobotomies.
(Rose Kennedy, who would now be diagnosed as having bipolar,, was given a lobotomy with her father's signed permission. She never spoke again, had to have help to walk, lived the rest of her life--from her 20s to 80s--in an institution.
And the scientists who developed lobotomies won the Nobel Prize. Husbands could have their wives committed to mental institutions for cheating on them (convince the psychiatrist that the wife was "out of control") and a lobotomy would be the "cure."
So many lives destroyed by this health care fad.
Please do not just blindly follow the latest healthcare fad.
I agree, anyone who is 300 pounds or more needs help.
Just as anyone under 110 pounds needs help.
      But fat shaming doesn't work.
And people who are obsessed about their weight are never going to be happy whether they are thin or fat.
I've known mothers who so controlled their daughter's food intake that the girls ended up in hospitals with severe anemia, anorexia and died from that condition.
As I said before, my grandmother & her sister were both over 200 pounds from age 20-85. Both were born when women's life spans were around 59-60. They far outlived that predicition and were active, happy, popular women. Both far outlived their slim husbands.
My thin grandmother died at age 72.
Weight is not the end-all, be-all prediction of longevity.
I put on 50 pounds due to medications. But my BP & blood tests are all always pefect. I am not going to let a stream of random people make me feel bad just because I don't look like what the current fad in science says we have to look like.

I hate seeing so many in FA community be so….mean? to people like me, and like John. Some kind of body positivity and autonomy, right? 🙄
