  • Dr. Phil discusses the highly debated issue of whether or not the body positivity movement -- a belief system that embraces bodies of all shapes and sizes -- has gone too far. Since 2020, 36.5% of Americans have been considered overweight and 32.5% obese. Are we doing too much to celebrate the plus-sized? Not according to Lexi and her husband, Will, who say they’ve struggled with their body image their entire lives and have now found freedom in letting go of the need to control their weight and instead accepting themselves the way they are. Dr. Phil also meets CZcams personality John Glaude, who says he once believed in the body positivity movement until it almost killed him. Plus, Dr. Howard Liebowitz discusses the medical realities of being overweight, and nutritionist Kelsey Koehler offers tips to set practical goals for weight loss. (21015)

Yes, accept yourself and love yourself but do not think for one second that this conflates with "being fat doesn't cause health problems" B.S.! Loving yourself no matter what doesn’t mean you think being fat is healthy! Nothing wrong with being body positive. I’m saying that as someone who is super skinny and has been super skinny my whole life. “Body positive” doesn’t mean you’re a moron and don’t know that obesity isn’t healthy. It means you know that you are ALWAYS valuable. You can lose weight because you value yourself, not in order to become valuable. If people want to love themselves then go ahead. I was told by my father that I was "fat" for many years---the most I've ever weighed is 135 pounds and that was the day before I gave birth to my son. The emotional trauma of being "fat," whether true or not, is very real. I'm now body positive because of years of work. Thanks to my own work after countless useless diets, etc, I feel good about my body. I'm old and didn't have the enormous amount of information available now. There's a lot of pain in all of our lives' journeys and we all choose our own paths. I don't see this as a conflict:. We now ALL have access to information so that we can make choices. Science shows, and--god forfend--insurance companies know that obesity is cost prohibitive but people have freedom to do as they wish. I have thin friends and over weight friends. It's not an issue. It is an individual issue, of course, solvable only by an individual's choice

For example, there are many diseases that actually make weight loss difficult or actually cause weight gain. PCOS for example (which I have) or hypothyroidism to name a few.
