"There's no wrong way to do it if you're enjoying it." Just wanted to quote that for absolute truth 👍
I'm always reminded of the simple instructions on the old Ral Partha "how to paint" sheets that came with boxed sets. To paraphrase, as it's been a few years: Paint like you're dressing the miniature. Start from the inside and work your way out from there. No matter how good/bad we get, all techniques seem to break down to that.
Sometimes there's no getting around the basics and I'm glad someone else figured that out before I had to learn the hard way. 👍
You sir are the Bob Ross of mech painting.
Well I thank you for that opinion. Bob is awesome and I hope I'm just a small part as good as he was at teaching.
Well done Ryan. I like the fact that this shouldn't scare anyone. It is very straight forward for the beginning and middle-of-the-road painters.
Thanks for the feedback, hopefully it helps folks jump into painting more.
That "Widowmaker" Dire Wolf mini is the business... an amazing sculpt of an amazing war machine. I need to get one or two!
I'll be replicating this paint job on Natasha Kerensky's warhammer, I think. Hoping it comes out just as nice!
It is a really great looking model and good luck with the paint job!
My painting has improved since I've subscribed. Thank you B1B. Well thought out and clear instructions on each video.
That's awesome to hear, keep it up!
Sweet! This looks like something that I can transfer over to painting Black Templar space marines. Thanks for the twofer!
Definitely, it works across the hobby and the blue grey is even better through an airbrush.
@@CamoSpecsOnline Could you do a video showing these techniques using an airbrush?
@@CamoSpecsOnline a airbrush video would be cool. Also now I need a sound clip of tex doing the systems power up when I play the table top game.
I have no intention of ever painting clanner scum but this tutorial (minus the red) was perfect for my 3rd Canopian Light Horses. Thanks.
Such a killer model. I'll be watching this when I get Widowmaker and a Warhammer.
Looking at minis makes painting feel super intimidating, but watching you go through the steps brings that fear down a few notches. Can't wait until I'm in a position to try some of these tutorials on my KS minis.
That's great, and try to remember you're painting for you, not anyone else .
I have a Dire Wolf a friend in high school painted in the 90s as the Widowmaker, at least his interpretation of it at the time.
I just drew this dire wolf from a salvage box! Was hoping for a Timberwolf but I guess I’ll be doing this instead! Thanks for the video!!!
Looks super good! I've always been wary of battletech models but you've got it looking better than I thought possible
Hey, thanks!
Great video! I've been using this exact technique for this paint scheme for a few years. Happy to see a video about it. Keep 'em coming
Thanks, will do!
Great color scheme! Thanks for sharing this.
I really like this black color scheme, Im going to try it
Love your stuff
Awesome paint job for an iconic character and mech. Thanks!
Thanks as well!
You paint very similarly to me, makes me feel good to know i'm doing things some what right.
Never a wrong way to go about painting something you enjoy. Lots of different paths lead to a nicely finished result and cutting corners makes you savvy and productive! ;P
If anybody is looking for an idea on camo spec regarding the MWO design of the black widow, I HIGHLY recommend GW's Dark Reaper alongside a slightly lighter grey drybrush on the edges; Not black, but has that slight light grey/blueish tint you'd need.
Awesome video. Thanks for the tips and the time.
That was amazing
Thank you!
Thank you! 😉👍🏻
The Spider that perches on the noise of the Wolf.
I just found my next color scheme.
One of these days I'm gonna take the plunge and turn my eclectic minis into a Smoke Jaguar army and this is gonna be great for Zeta Galaxy
Very cool. Do Natasha's Dragoon Warhammer next!
Thanks. I've already got an original Warhammer already done as the Black Widow from years ago so not likely going to repeat the same scheme as there's tons of other factions to show and not enough hobby time in the day.
Thank you for this!
The miniature that makes your friiends leave the BT weekend
Well they're not happy when it's set up on the table ;)
Thank you b1 , you rock dude
Woooooo! Thanks!
Great video B1 :-D
Thanks! 😁
+1 for a Tex rendition of bitchin Betty
Imagine all the "mechs" in 1/48 scale !
decades on cool to see music and long time ago hero's still popular
Great guide! Will we be seeing Morgan Kell's Archer at some point?
Possibly, it's tough to justify a repeat of what are essentially red and black which have been done just now and the red via a contrast tutorial. I'm not writing it off completely, but not sure if/when I'll get to it.
@@CamoSpecsOnline It's all good. I was just wondering if all the Legend mechs were getting showcased. Definitely would like to see your take on Pryde's Timber Wolf.
Love your website help me to determine what the house colors are. Only thing I don't know is which mechs were used my which houses the most. Is that something you might add to your website?
Thanks. You’ll want to use the Battletech Master Unit List (MUL) for determining what units are available to whom for a given era. It’s on the bg.battletech website.
Great video....do you suggest starting with a primer before starting your primary base coat?
Yes, definitely. Primer allows your acrylic paint to bond to the primer because acrylic does not bond well to metal or plastic on it's own.
I'm always excited to see jeweling and the decals are snazzy too, thought they spend more time on my fingers and folded on my tweezers than on the miniature itself, but it get there eventually. Also how stiff is that makeup brush/ drybrush?
The brush feels like any other large synthetic bristle paintbrush I have. A natural hair brush would definitely be softer and too soft for drybrushing.
Small decals are such a pain...
Hearing Tex voice of a sudden was a bit suprising.
Like. Comment. Sharing.
One question, prime coating (black) is quite glossy, is this is done for purpose.
No reason, just how the primer looked even though it's mostly satin/matte and it won't affect the paintjob once you're finished.
Definetly a very good tutorial!
I have just a question about the 13th Wolf Guard. Have they the same colours as the widowmaker or as the rest of the Alpha Galaxy?
The Wolf Marauders(Alpha) uses primarily white and gray paint, with the exception of the Wolf Spiders (13th Wolf Guard), who have kept their unit's original black-and-red paint scheme. Per FM:Warden Clans, page 159
@@CamoSpecsOnline thanks for your answer.
The book is realy hard finde in germany.
Sadly your answer rises a new question: how does the Emblem of the 13th with its Black Spider above the Wolf Symbol fit in a Black Mech?
@@danielreinbold9391 I'd have to see if the decal had a grey outline like the dragoons spider decal did. If not, A bit of grey behind where you want to mount the decal then bring some black up to a thin edge.
I would have liked to get the legendary Dire Wolf but I have too many as it is. I have two in medal and I think three from the KS now. Two of those from the salvage boxes...
I have a mech problem and I'll be the first to admit it! :)
@@CamoSpecsOnline I wish I had a mech problem of Summoners and Hellbringers lol
Soon to have a wallet problem when I decide what to add to my wave 2 order.
Oh yes, this will make a good reference if I decide to paint the Black Widows. If I'm using Citadel Paints, would you recommend using Corvus Black or Abbadon Black for the primary colour?
Is there a difference?
I think Corvus may be closer to the charcoal color but I don't have any of my own to see for sure. Abbadon is definitely a traditional black and would be fine for the base coat before overbrushing.
Yup, corvus black will be good instead of charcoal. Also Ulthuan grey is a good light blueish grey, and if you have black templar contrast, it will be enough as a thinned down charcoal.
For the primer coat, did you use a spray can of black primer or an airbrush?
I used my airbrush, it's much more convenient for me.
So is there any chance we can get a tutorial like this with contrast paints?
The non-contrast method was voted on above the contrast one so unlikely that I'll redo the same scheme. That being said, Kell hounds has black.... ;)
Does this vid have anything to do with that one time at Gencon, where someone cosplayed as Natasha??
I sincerely hope not.
My light grey drybrush is always getting washed out with the matte varnish, any tips?
experiment with a brighter grey and see if that gets you more definition.
Where do you get the figurines? Been searching everywhere...
These were from the Kickstarter fulfillment. Most of these will be hitting retail in the next several months.
Old school wise, the widow symbol was on the leg, at least on her warhammer
I think you're thinking of the spider emblem on the leg of the Warhammer. The hourglass is on the center torso of the mech. Reference Combat Manual: Mercenaries cover art.
Nice outro lol
😆😅😆
Hey, when you say seal your miniature what do you mean? also lol played my first tabletop game as a clanner I see why IS players get mad.
Seal and varnish are synonymous. An enamel clear coat from a spray can or a water based varnish sprayed with an airbrush.
I know this is a dumb question but where do you get that model?
Appears to be from the Catalyst Clan Command Star blister pack. I too would like to know where these are actually available. (though I want the Inner Sphere packs)
This particular one was one of the legendary mechwarrior sculpts from the Clan Invasion kickstarter. The one in the Clan Command Star pack is the Dire Wolf Prime, this is Natasha Kerensky’s custom Widowmaker configuration.
Like Garrett Rooney said, the plastic Widowmaker is from the Legendary Mechwarriors lance pack that was produced as part of the Kickstarter. Unlike the other Lance and Star packs, after Kickstarter fulfillment is complete it will only be available from the CGL webstore and at cons and other events CGL attends.
Could mechanicas grey work as well?
I think it would work well. You can always try it out on the hex base or somewhere else to see if you like how it looks before applying.
@@CamoSpecsOnline ok thank you! I’ll try that! It seems to have a touch of blue in there already!
Can you include the paints in the description of the video.
Done
@@CamoSpecsOnline thank you very much. You bring much honor to clan wolverine.
