The Sega CD games that layered the CD audio onto the on-board sound very much hold up. Was just playing the hell out of Road Rash yesterday, most 90s experience this month.
ONe of the reasons that I think Game Sack is just CLASSIC is because of the humor and the drab comedy the guys add to the show. It's COMICAL, serious and very informative for gamers and for the Retro-gamers from the old school. The reviews are funny, slick, and ingenius!! Keep doing what you do guys!!!! Love your show!!!

You are wrong, I studied Japanese, and their sound holds the middle between our R & L, it's a sort of rolling R that starts with an L, something that doesn't exist over here, same as their "fu" which holds the middle between an F & H and since Gaiar(l)es is Engrish to begin with, they clearly aimed for an L, but since they do not know the difference between an L & an R they simply mixed it up, there's hundreds of examples like that in anime & games. A good example of their misuse of the L/R, is in teRebi, which means teLevision, it is a loanword they took from English

Yes, I read it in an interview long ago, and that combined with my knowledge of Japanese, made perfect sense. And I know what you mean, I also speak Spanish (I'm from Belgium, but we go on vacation to Spain a lot so I decided to learn Spanish too, to make life easier when we are over there LoL), your double R like in perro sounds unlike anything else, also the G (which sounds more like our K), and we don't even have a native sound for your J LoL. I have this friend who lives here, but is originally from Chile, and his pronunciation is completely different from Spanish folks...I love it, language is so great, you can learn something new every day.

Back in the old days, Sega used to make a big deal about how much memory their games had. They used it in their marketing quite often and to me, it was quite amusing. So a game with 8 MEGA POWER would be 8 megabits or one megabyte. It was always something that I used back in high school to show how much better Sega was than Nintendo. Yeah, I was an ass. Actually, I still am!

"The day" we are talking about on these things usually predates the term "back in the day" i.e. it (that phrase) was invented in the ninties, and British people, and allot of other people in this world first heard it in the late ninties or after, so it's pretty awkward that that is now so universal. It wouldn't be a problem if people said that every now and again, but one gets the impression that some people don't know any other way to express "in the past" other than that phrase. Like, what "day" do *they* mean? Back when they wore futuristic sunglasses and tight shirts and bumped ghetto blasters and had processed hair as opposed to baggy clothes and athletic gear? Because that's what that term was invented to describe, a major shift in black American culture, not to make it about race, buuut...I mean, I was there, we used to say things like that ironically to draw attention to the contrast, that was the funny part. Now people act like it's the only way to express that idea...I mean, I certainly can't imagine they think it's hip, it's about as hip as "the bomb" If the first time you hear "street slang" is from a middle aged womans beauty program or a twelve year old it's probably already over.
haha that ending I never laughed so hard at one of those XD Man yeah the Genesis had some really great shooters... Gunstar Heroes (since it was mentioned) being my all-time favorite genesis game! Truxton was also great, I did like the music in it. (shame the sequel only ever came out on the Japan-only FM Towns Marty) I did have Sol-Feace on the SEGA CD it was pretty good too. I never realized Slap Fight MD was remixed by Yuzo Koshiro I may have to add that to my collection!

Super Airwolf has the classic TV tune and some hilarious zoomed in-action sections where you massacre helpless troops on the ground! Great episode guys, thankyou!
I just grabbed Task Force Harrier, would never have really known about it without this show. Thanks! Glad I picked it up, was fair market value not a steal, but I love vertical shooters and am glad to have another. Graphics are samey for a lot of the game, but I was actually pleasantly surprised at the weapon variations for ground targets and air targets; most games have it where every weapon hits every enemy type. I'm from Canada and just got back into Sega a few months ago and am very surprised how hard it is to come across genesis games versus NES/SNES games like I am used to.
Idk why, but the extremely corny "acting" you learned from the "Game Sack School of Acting" is one of my favorite parts of the show. "That's exactly right, Cory." :p I love this show and I love your personalities. You guys are hilarious and have great chemistry. Keep the content coming
Empire Of Steel on the Mega Drive was one of my childhood favourites (Steel Empire for those in the States). Huge love for the Master System version of shooters R Type and Fantasy Zone too.

The attraction of Xenon 2 Megablast appears to have been rooted entirely in its awesome soundtrack on the Amiga; the port to the Mega Drive/Genesis cut the one element worth talking about in the game, while even on the Amiga, instruments cut out whenever you fired your weapon.
Some 16-bit covers really did have varying degrees of a WTF factor to them (Phalanx on SNES comes to mind), so I wouldn't have been surprised if the US Gaiares cover actually did look like that. That was hilarious. Great work as always, guys.
I think my favorite Genesis Shooter is Arrow Flash. There is just something about the intro and the soundtrack that just keeps making me come back to play it after all these years
My collection of Genesis shoot em ups recently grew a bit. I now have Thunder Force II and IV, Galaxy Force II, and Truxton. I'm thinking of trying to track down Sol-Deace.
Thunder Force IV is the BEST 16-bits horizontal shooter ever made!!! the music is absolute incredible, amazing graphics, it's hard like no one, and the ending is the most epic ever!. If a day I woke up surrounded by the all sega stuff, I will scream too...for the happiness! Great selection,
The Genesis does have some great shooters. Love the Thunder Force series. Actually just picked up a repro card with TF 2, 3, and 4 on one cart and they all play and sound amazing! I was an idiot and sold my originals along with Gaiares when I sold my Genesis to upgrade to "superior" next-gen hardware. Boy, was that a mistake. I think Biohazard Battle is also underappreciated. Love the music and style of that game. I also do love Star Wars Arcade. It is an amazingly faithful port of the arcade with more features and Soul Star is AMAZING! The graphics, sound, and variety of gameplay crammed into Soul Star are something to behold.
Bubble And Squeak (brilliant game!) Has a great SHMUP bonus. You have to find the craft in the levels to access it. Not many ppl know about this game (same with Flink). Bubble And Squeak is a super fun platformer where you team up with an AI buddy to get through the levels. The graphics, music and playability are top notch.
My aunt got me Biohazard Battle for my birthday, I remember thinking I was going to hate it since I never heard of it. But I was really surprised how much I enjoyed it. I still have that copy and it's one of my most favorite shoot em ups on the Genesis.
Ah man I cant believe you guys said arrow flash was an average shooter it was the only one i ever liked. I was so looking forward to an in-depth look from Game Sack. I mean you tell us the good things and then mention any bad things that might get a player upset. Actually that was in the montage with quite a few other games, but I took it out when I drew the line on what I wanted to include. I kept including more and more games and eventually I would have had to include every game in which the player fired a shot. So I took games like Granada, Twinkle Tale, Star Cruiser, AH3 Thunderstrike and more out.
Battle Squadron together with SWIV (which is also originally on Amiga) and Xenon 2 are some of the best shooters you could get on a homecomputer... but maybe not on a japanese console.
Um, technically, Space Turtleship (Uzu Keobukseon) isn't unlicensed. Samsung was actually the official distributor of Sega's stuff in South Korea (before anti-Japan laws got repealed and Sega took it from there, although Dreamcast was already dead by then), and they even developed that game (the only truly Korean first-party title). This one is actually licensed (albeit by Samsung, not Sega).
Thanks for the info mate. I had just uploaded a video on the unlicensed shooters for the mega drive but could not find much info on most of them. I know it says its licensed by sega on the box but I thought Samsung had just put it on to make it look official. Similar to Russian games. I find it really quite interesting just how little information is known about these games. Adventurous boy and magic girl must be some of the rarest games on any system.
Yeah, I'd understand the confusion if it was a more obscure company, but Samsung is a pretty huge electronics company worldwide. It'd be a pretty big stain on their reputation if they made unlicensed and illicit stuff for their home country without approval from Sega. Though keep in mind Sega only let Samsung sell their stuff as a get-around to hide the fact that it was Japanese, because Korea had a rather rocky history with Japan.
Ah, lots of media, including Crayon Shin-Chan. Just that they had to hide the fact that it was Japanese, usually by blotting out any Japanese text and changing names to be more Korean-sounding.

Great video, love the genesis/mega drive shmup library.I expected biohazard battle to get a little more love, but I'm probably biased as it was my favourite childhood mega drive shooter. The game has a very unique feeling, and the soundtrack is awesome, I noticed you guys used one of the tracks at the beggining of another one of your videos, so I guess it caught your attention too.

After watching this a few times over, I can say with confidence the "... 6 I think... Wait, no... 7! We've covered 7!" Is my favourite part of the video. Shooters are probs my most cherished genre and boy, did I miss out growing up on the Super Nintendo!
A friend and I used to play one of these Megadrive shoot em ups and I can't remember the name of it! All I can remember is that it was a side scroller and had an in level shop you could fly into to upgrade your ship.
Granted I've never been disappointed with an episode of your show, but this one has to be one of the best episodes, if not THE best episode yet. Please keep up the great work gentlemen (and Jen too). With that said, I'm surprised you didn't mention Wings of Wor (Gynoug) being made by Masiya, the same developers of the Cho Aniki series on the PC Engine, hence the coolness/weirdness of the enemy designs. *sigh* I really do miss the 16-bit era...man, that was the best time to be a gamer!
I had to draw the line somewhere otherwise I'd have to include every game where the player fired a shot! So as far as the "into the screen" stuff goes I just limited it to 3rd person stuff, that's why Thunderstrike (which you chose to mention Sewer Shark over, poor Thundersrtike) didn't make it. I didn't even include all of the 3rd person stuff. That stuff was extra.

ha very kool episode. I am amazed you got through so many games with so much detail. I had to laugh, 2 of the shooters I had (of only a handful) for the Genesis ended up right next to each other in your battery of quick reviews (phelios and Insector x). Never did beat either completely...

Every game here was played on a real system. We rarely use emulators and when we do they're usually for arcade games.

My aunt got me Biohazard Battle for my birthday, I remember thinking I was going to hate it since I never heard of it. But I was really surprised how much I enjoyed it. I still have that copy and it's one of my most favorite shoot em ups on the Genesis.

I mean you tell us the good things and then mention any bad things that might get a player upset. Hellfire is actually my favorite Genesis shooter. Its so versitile in the weapons you can use.

Actually that was in the montage with quite a few other games, but I took it out when I drew the line on what I wanted to include. I kept including more and more games and eventually I would have had to include every game in which the player fired a shot. So I took games like Granada, Twinkle Tale, Star Cruiser, AH3 Thunderstrike and more out.

Battle Squadron together with SWIV (which is also originally on Amiga) and Xenon 2 are some of the best shooters you could get on a homecomputer... but maybe not on a japanese console.

Um, technically, Space Turtleship (Uzu Keobukseon) isn't unlicensed. Samsung was actually the official distributor of Sega's stuff in South Korea (before anti-Japan laws got repealed and Sega took it from there, although Dreamcast was already dead by then), and they even developed that game (the only truly Korean first-party title). This one is actually licensed (albeit by Samsung, not Sega).
Thanks for the info mate. I had just uploaded a video on the unlicensed shooters for the mega drive but could not find much info on most of them. I know it says its licensed by sega on the box but I thought Samsung had just put it on to make it look official. Similar to Russian games.
I find it really quite interesting just how little information is known about these games. Adventurous boy and magic girl must be some of the rarest games on any system.
Yeah, I'd understand the confusion if it was a more obscure company, but Samsung is a pretty huge electronics company worldwide. It'd be a pretty big stain on their reputation if they made unlicensed and illicit stuff for their home country without approval from Sega. Though keep in mind Sega only let Samsung sell their stuff as a get-around to hide the fact that it was Japanese, because Korea had a rather rocky history with Japan.

Ah, lots of media, including Crayon Shin-Chan. Just that they had to hide the fact that it was Japanese, usually by blotting out any Japanese text and changing names to be more Korean-sounding.

Great video, love the genesis/mega drive shmup library.I expected biohazard battle to get a little more love, but I'm probably biased as it was my favourite childhood mega drive shooter. The game has a very unique feeling, and the soundtrack is awesome, I noticed you guys used one of the tracks at the beggining of another one of your videos, so I guess it caught your attention too.

After watching this a few times over, I can say with confidence the "... 6 I think... Wait, no... 7! We've covered 7!" Is my favourite part of the video. Shooters are probs my most cherished genre and boy, did I miss out growing up on the Super Nintendo!

A friend and I used to play one of these Megadrive shoot em ups and I can't remember the name of it! All I can remember is that it was a side scroller and had an in level shop you could fly into to upgrade your ship.
Granted I've never been disappointed with an episode of your show, but this one has to be one of the best episodes, if not THE best episode yet. Please keep up the great work gentlemen (and Jen too).
With that said, I'm surprised you didn't mention Wings of Wor (Gynoug) being made by Masiya, the same developers of the Cho Aniki series on the PC Engine, hence the coolness/weirdness of the enemy designs.

I had to draw the line somewhere otherwise I'd have to include every game where the player fired a shot! So as far as the "into the screen" stuff goes I just limited it to 3rd person stuff, that's why Thunderstrike (which you chose to mention Sewer Shark over, poor Thundersrtike) didn't make it. I didn't even include all of the 3rd person stuff. That stuff was extra.

ha very kool episode. I am amazed you got through so many games with so much detail. I had to laugh, 2 of the shooters I had (of only a handful) for the Genesis ended up right next to each other in your battery of quick reviews (phelios and Insector x). Never did beat either completely...

I love the overhead levels of Thunder Force 2 as well. I love Bosconian a lot though and it sort of feels like an advanced version of that.
