    it's considered the deadliest musical instrument because it used to be made from leaded glass, and the rims were color coded with lead paint. They thought it was the ethereal sounds it produced that were driving people insane, but it was really lead poisoning causing hallucinations and eventually death. You play it with wet fingertips like ringing a wine glass.

    • @davidbennett1357
      @davidbennett1357 Před 8 měsíci +10

      correct! I believe they use gold plating to denote the different tones.....these instruments are beautiful to listen to and VERY expensive to acquire, to the tune of $8,000 a pop.....

    • @davidbennett1357
      @davidbennett1357 Před 8 měsíci +12

      on further research down THIS internet rabbit hole, it is actually something called gold luster, NOT plating (I was wondering how one would go about applying plating to glass...). Apparently 'gold luster' is a liquid with actually gold dust suspended inside it, which can be painted ON to surfaces like glass and pottery and then fired to permanently attach the luster TO the surface of the object......
      I have managed to edu-MAH-cate myself today.......YAY, internet......

    • @jasonsexton8869
      @jasonsexton8869 Před 8 měsíci

      Nicely done! The documentary I got the information from I watched years ago and said the original was covered in color coded lead paint. Even if it was gold lustre back in the day, leaded glass was still the main problem with the instrument. Ben Franklin invented the thing, and leaded glass was very much what was used for the bowls, specifically lead crystal.
      Upon further investigation, that documentary didn't look too deeply into the cause. People believed it was either lead paint, or lead from the glass bowls, but no hard data was ever collected as to why people went mad and died after playing the thing. Ben Franklin certainly didn't go mad as a hatter from his own musical instrument after all. @@davidbennett1357

      @@Integritys_Sum Traditionally, they were made with leaded glass or crystal. Purportedly, because they were wet, the lead would leech out of the glass and be absorbed by the musician's skin. However, there is no scientific basis for lead being absorbed through the skin in this manner.
      There is also the belief that the tones of the instrument itself would give rise to melancholia and depression. No basis for that, either.

    • @ryanmacarthur6250
      @ryanmacarthur6250 Před 8 měsíci +45

      The musician would lick their fingers so they glided across the glass smoother. Licking their fingers meant they were ingesting small amounts of lead which built up over time in their system.

    • @patrickdix772
      @patrickdix772 Před 8 měsíci +22

      Thing is, lead was everywhere. Leaded crystal was used all the time for drinking. While, if you were frequently playing the glass harmonica you might be exposed to more leaded glass, there's no scientific evidence the glass harmonica increased lead poisoning significantly. The fact that they used leaded paint everywhere, including to mark the bowls of the glass harmonica is a more likely source.
      It was supposedly a cause of madness, but those rumors were limited to Germany, and possibly only the city of Vienna. This, to me, seems more like "one / some player(s) had mental issues, so it must have been the instrument."
      Another real risk is that the bowls can shatter during use. While you're not likely to die from that, but wouldn't have been pleasant to have one or more fingers sliced open.

    The Maui house thing was explained by the local fire dept. They said it was because they didn't have any bushes, plants, or anything that would have easily ignited anywhere near the house. They just have a bed of rocks. Apparently, most fires like this spread from one house to the next by small embers. These ember usually can't ignite the wood itself, but can easily ignite smaller things next to the house and thus that starts burning hot enough to ignite the house itself.

The guy was a MONSTER! But despite his appearance, he wasn't really into sports. In fact, he ended up being in the same choral class as me. But, I'm pretty sure the reason it is called a Stealth strategic bomber is not that it is invisible to the naked eye, but rather that it is - or was? - invisible to your typical military plane detecting technologies, making it able to fly without being spotted on the radar.

    • @TheLastSane1
      @TheLastSane1 Před 8 měsíci

      The males will rush toward the cat to scare it away. Our Ancestors would have done the same thing, because Leopards are ambush hunters, if they do not make an immediate kill you have time to scare them off. Humans were devastating because we could run for hours without stopping, our prey and scared-off predators would have to stop long before we did, and then we would attack as a group while they were exhausted. This is why there are not many large mammals left after the ice age. The Baboons follow a similar path.
