Happy October!
It took me some time to warm up to Oikawa when I first watched Haikyuu. This particular video essay and character analysis on Oikawa encapsulates why he is one of my favorite characters in the series, as well as being arguably the most relatable character in the series for myself.
I worked overtime to refine this video essay (despite it coming out a month after my last video), so I hope you enjoy it.

It has been brought to my attention that more of a few lines in this video essay sound extremely similar (if not outright the same) to lines said in Aleczandxr's video (The Curse of the Ordinary), and it was certainly not my intention to copy his video or in the way he wrote about Oikawa. That was definitely my mistake. I was inspired by his video when I watched it months ago, so it is highly likely that some of his wording and language unintentionally flowed into mine as well.
I'll do better on my next videos to avoid this entirely.

Totally ok! I definitely made the mistake in the first place, and I'm glad you brought it to my attention.
You are talking about the sane character. So, some lines are meant to overlap. And accepting the fact that you might have done it sub consciously takes courage. Respect
I know that this video is about Oikawa but let me put in tsukishima’s quote
“Even if I work really hard and become the best in karasuno, what will happen after that? .... there is always a better person than you, and a better person than him. It’s endless. Even if you are able to show results somewhere, you’ll never be number one! You’re gonna loose somewhere! Everyone knows that! So what is the reason why everyone working so hard?!?”

I want to say that this quote is pretty good but the person who is better then you and the person who is better then them what If they never tried they would never know unless they try
I feel like Oikawa is one of the most relatable characters in the series. I'm rewatching Haikyuu now, and it feels like I'm watching it for the first time all over again. I remember when I first saw Oikawa, he frustrated me and annoyed me, but grew to love him. Looking back now, I think the reason why I couldn't stand him at first was that I also saw myself in him. I was a tennis player in high school, so I can get where he was coming from. He will forever remain one of my favorite characters.
Tsukishima and Oikawa are really similar characters.
One decided to give up (at first) because he knew that despite training like crazy and being the best, there will always be someone better than you, while Oikawa embraced this reality and kept going despite everything.
Also notice how one dislikes volleyball (at first) and the other one loves it, I see Oikawa as a Tsukishima that tried his best to become a great player (even though he is one).
That's probably why they're my two favourite characters in the series.

I think it’s quite great writing that this coach’s name is never divulged. The idea presented by all great leaders and embodied by all those who give their dream a shot.
That's something I've never thought about before, but that's great analysis!
A few other quotes have moved close to my #1 favorite quote, but this one still has to be my favorite.

as someone who so deeply sees themself in oikawa, i want to say thank you for speaking about this. this video perfectly encapsulates everything i feel about oikawa and more. he’s criminally underrated, even for a ‘popular’ character and is often diminished to his less than perfect qualities. he’s so much more than that, this is truly an amazing video

I love how this review doesn't use the talent vs hard work analogy against Oikawa. So many analyses I've seen of his character have severely downplayed all of his hard work and turn him into someone that never puts in their all despite being immensely talented. I really dislike the analogy as a whole because of this, but this review beautifully touched upon it in a way that does the character real justice.
Yes THIS!! I hate it when they reduce Oikawa's character to "if he worked as hard as Atsumu or kageyama then he would be at their level" nonsense.
What they don't understand is a thing like talent do exist but it is not a thing to put too much stock into it. And sometimes people have different talents. Or different amounts of talent. I mean world would have been on a different place today if just putting in similar kinds of hardwork meant everyone is like another person and achieving similar kinds of things or on exactly the same level.
It's as wrong to think that kageyama or Atsumu do not work hard at all and are only talent, as it is to think that oikawa doesn't work as hard as those two.
Oikawa's mentality might be putting too much stock on talent and then stressing himself out, but his actions have always pushed against that mentality. His actions are not of a rigid or defeatist person, but an achiever, a go-getter, a person who doesn't make excuses and continuously work on self-improvement.
To me, Oikawa and Tanaka are the most relatable characters in Haikyuu. I've got an older brother and both of us are in the same career. But he has always been so much more naturally talented then I am. Every where I would go to get a job, it seemed like my brother had already been there and I was being compared to him. I finally found my own company where no one knew him, but the entire time I've been trapped by my own inferiority complex, believing that I was never good enough or the best person for the job.
Recently, my director hat a talk with me that over the past year, two of my coworkers who have more experience than me, had come to talk with him that even when I was at my worst, they still couldn't compete with me. He told me he didn't care who my brother was, that I needed to find the value that I brought to the world, and to look around at all the people who look up to me.
These Haiku characters remind me that even though I may not be as good or talented as I want to be or think I should be, that doesn't mean I can't do awesome stuff.
Wow... He is such an amazing autagonist, I wish that someday, I'll be as brave as Oikawa is, like c'mon he is litteraly able to stand face to face the very reality, that he will never reach his dream. AND STILL he stands there, ready to face new challanges - so inspiriiiing

im playing vollyball as a setter and its very exciting and makes me want to improve
after watching this and "The Curse of the Ordinary" i see myself even more in oikawa's character (i already did because we have similar hair but now even more so)

Deep analysis of anime characters and understanding the perspectives of them. What it feels to envy Ushi-waka or Kageyama like Oikawa did too, what it feels to be unnoticed but help push through the challenges like Ennoshita, or how Sugawara is gentle and encouraging towards others and what it is like if someone like him helped you. These analysis videos are well-recorded, it's not the best but it's good enough for the viewers to relax and listen to. I hope your channel grows big and you'll feel much happier than you are now!
When I was growing up i was a younger sibling just like you and my brother was a tall muscular rugby player and he was really good but I never really had any ambition to be good at sports so I started working out got stronger and better but I still didn’t have ambition for sports but then I found that I had a passion of IT and took on that I also got really good at video games and when my brother came back from university for Christmas we played a game together and I destroyed him and I felt so good finally something I know I’m good at so I continued that and I let go of feeling inferior because I just didn’t see the point in feeling inferior to him anymore and that’s when I got way more confidence and niw I feel much better about myself
Great video! It’s really well edited, your voice was super clear, and you made many great points that I agreed with. It also made me tear up a bit, especially when you said how even when others compliment you, it doesn’t matter if you don’t believe in yourself. It is true, as I personally have been praised for my intelligence especially in school, but I always felt inferior because it felt like that was the only good thing about me, as no teachers ever said good things about my hard work or social skills. When I did extra classes at a more difficult level, it made me feel terrible when I found out that there were people better then me, people more intelligent. (Look at me over sharing on the internet again lol) Oikawa, as a character, was someone I could relate to. His hard work is rarely acknowledged by others in the series and I’m really glad how (slight manga spoilers!!!!!) he was able to make it into the international stage at the end in one of the best volleyball teams in the world. He really deserved it.

thank you for this, this is beautiful. as an oikawa kinnie, i cried. when he first appeared, i also hated his character for being smug and arrogant. then it slowly turned into love-hate. until i eventually loved him completely once i get to know him better and realized how similar i am to him; to be “good” at something but never the best. i really think he’s the best character in this series
I almost have the opposite. I am really good at what I do at a young age and for the first time have a lot of confidence. People respect me but there are jealous people who say I’m arrogant. The grass is always greener on the other side. When you believe in yourself people view you as arrogant (which I probably am a little) but that’s cause I worked hard for something for more than 5 years and I’m finally good at it. I wouldn’t say I’m talented in it but that I have worked hard to get to where I am.

I saw so many channels making videos about Haikyuu and one of them what I most liked it was yours. The form you bring your interpretation about the characters or moments in the series is so amazing. i think it would be fascinating if you compare my two favorite Captains - Oikawa and Bokuto. i know that this is an old id, and you'll probably never read this, but i would find this comparison amazing. if you deep-dive into it, they both share any features, albeit having very different personality. and while Bokuto has a supportive team, and Akaashi on his side, Toru fights all by himself. with himself. he is my favorite, by far. :)

I personally don't quite agree with your argument since I don't believe that Oikawa after that final volley in the match causes him to bloom a new talent rather it is the bitter acceptance of his limitations. That's why he is able to face Kagayama at the end of their match, unlike the previous match. He forgoes the inferiority complex that has plagued his life for so long and adopts the mindset of acknowledging his skills as many people vying for and the possible growth through further refinement of his playing skills even if it won't be comparable to 100% of Kagayama's output.
Still, this is a great video due in part to not mentioning the debate about hard work vs. talent since both sides put hard work to get to their respective position, it is just that one person has more talent. Keep up the good work.
Great point - I suppose I see it as when he "forgoes the inferiority complex", it allows him to fully embrace and acknowledge the talent that he's always had, but kept under chains because of that complex.
