Without starting by "roping" each foot, and teaching them to lead by that foot you are hunting a wreck. If you get them out of control scared you need training yourself. Few horses will react pracefully, as this already trained animal did, to suddenly being hobbled. Incrementally work into hobbling. Teach them to trust...

Long before you put hobbles on the horse, you prepare her for success. Pressure and release with proper timing, rhythm, and feel. It may take days. Take the time it takes to get the horse confident.

Thank you so much for this video! I would love to turn 2 of my horses out on an unfenced pasture while I work with the other in the pen for a few hours. Will also be nice for camping where there aren’t trees, but again, lots of grazing space.

Im still not completely sure the point of this. Is it just to teach a horse not to move around when they have the hobbles on?

It’s to learn a horse to be comfortable in an u comfortable situation. So in the end a horse will be calm. Imagine a horse breaks through a fence and is stuck. A horse used to hobbling knows it’ll be alright and will remain calmer than a horse that isn’t used to hobbling :)

And to teach an impatient horse just to relax and stand calmly. I have an appy that paws and paws. He got so impatient, he kicked at me. I got some hobbles and am currently teaching him patience and manners. Does so much better than getting angry and beating him like most impatient "trainer" do.

If done irresponsibly, yes. If you know what your doing, itll teach them manners and respect. Do it wrong, a horse COULD hurt itself but very rarely.

Hobbling is so stupid. Just teach your horse to be calm when tied normally. No need to restrain their legs like we're still in the stone ages.

They have been hobbling horses for 1000 years.A hobbled horse can graze and have a bit more freedom rather than being tied up for hours. Ive spent months in the back country and have never had a bad experience and the horses welcome the hobbles because they get to eat.Much safer for the horse than picketing!Hobbling is for long trips where there is no comfy stable with hay and grain or fenced in pasture. It is dangerous for you and the horse if they escape in the mountains!

No, it teaches your horse to not freak out if something gets wrapped around/caught on their legs. Think about it, if you never teach your horse to not panic when their legs get restricted, and they get caught in some downed wire fence. They could panic and hurt themselves or other people/horses. Remember, horses are prey animals. When something grabs them, their automatic response is to freak out/run. Unless you set them up for success and teach them it's okay to be caught

Thank you for your feedback! Hobbles when used correctly in the hands of an experienced trainer such as Ken McNabb can help teach important lessons for the horse such as being comfortable with obstacles on their legs, learning to ground tie and looking to the trainer for direction. A great example is if a horse and rider are out on the ranch riding through thick brush, the horse needs to be quiet enough to not blow up when a thick patch of grass gets caught around their legs and should wait for the rider to untangle them. Practical uses all around! We hope you found this video informative!

There are multiple reasons and needs to add this skill to a horse's abilities. A Need to have a way to keep horses close when grazing on long pack trips... and also to reduce the panic and injury when unintended situations occur where a horses feet/legs get entangled somehow.

Though no one would hobble a horse and leave them permanently hobbled all day long... hobbles are a training tool, not a way to store (for lack of a better word) your horse.
