Recently Games Workshop made a change to the lore of the Custodes Faction and annoyed many of their most loyal fans. If you’re tired of your war game hobby being mistreated and are seeking an alternative, I have recommendations that will interest you. Today, I’ll be looking at battletech, turnip28, warmachine, and bushido, as well as discussing these alternatives to Warhammer 40K.

I remember that on Twitter the Battletech community has long had a transgender flag on its avatar... 😅😅
Battletech is also captured.
And? GW’s predatory business practices and lack of lore consistency have nothing to do with trans people
Yes, but actually no.
I always wanted a astra militarum krieg army, but it was too expensive.
Now I will 3d print one.
They can take this hobby from my cold dead hands. Why would we surrender to them. In the age of 3D printing, they should fear us. Im not locked in here with them, they are locked in here with me!
I'm going to start getting into Warhammer and I will not spend a single dollar on official merch.
I haven't bought a single GW product in years, because I absolutely despise the lazy scum. I love WH40k. I will hold the line. Only when 40k and GW are both ashes in the wind will I finally declare an end to my crusade of contempt. Into the fires of battle! Unto the anvils of war!
Walked away… no, not yet anyway. I recently played a game, 500 points, the game was over before I took a turn. Played a second game and similar happened.
The problem is mindset, mine is grab a leader, box or two of infantry and then some sort of big gun and paint it all to the best of my ability. My opponent chose his army by the rules, sprayed them all one colour and blew me away. We were playing different games with the same rule set.
It comes down to the game not evolving past the "I go you go system". if you dont have a back and forth of player actions on person will always just be watching the game as the other plays. Think what a game of chess would look like if one side moved ALL its pieces first then the other. GW game designers just exist to sell models not create a playable game.
War machine is better for the turn 1 problem
Yes, to warhammer 40k 5th edition, with second hand models (or the ones that I already have).
It is like having my cake and eat it.
I will continue to play older editions of Warhammer with my current models, 3d prints, and 2nd hand. I also support new creators who want to make their own stuff. (I didn't like 10e anyway, so not the worst time for this to happen).
As far Battletech - Catalyst Game Labs the current custodians of the Battletech wargame - are just as bad or worse than GW with the reasons people are ticked off with Warhammer right now. I highly recommend the same 2nd hand market and models. You also can play Battletech with cardboard cutouts or "This quarter is an Atlas" if absolutely necessary. Support Warhammer, not GW. Support Battletech, not CGL.
I also do want to try other wargames - The main thing I desire is wargames that lean on narrative and "Your Dudes" with a fair bit of customization and flavor for army construction (I.E. "Here's my army of dudes as part of X faction. Here's their backstory and their preferred tactics"). Warmahordes seems to have some cool lore, but I've heard the current ruleset is not so great and there's not a lot in the way of generic leader characters for one's own fluff. I like me some narrative wargaming.
Older editions and 3D printers are the way!
Maybe Trench crusade? (skirmish scale)
I still have a 3000 point Warhammer Fantasy High Elf Army... yes, I am that old
I had around 2500 points for Wood Elves which the thru in the rubbish bin when I moved as cities.
Hell no, it's too fun, the lore is fun too and the tabletop is awesome.
Did you mention one page rules?
I will still be playing 40k but using 3D printed minis, using Army Painter Paints, and the ruleset that myself and my friends like. I have canceled my warhammer sub and will not be buying anything else from GW. This is coming from someone who has been in this game and genre since the late 80's.
@D6Damage OPR was my first wargame (how I got into the hobby). It seems to be a good alternative for 40k fans
I am, but it's easy for me, I only wasted money in literature, I will always cherish it as "Before DUH MESSAGE" took it.
Yes, after FORTY years and ten-of-thousands pounds spent on my hobby. I'm done. (thankfully I have someone who wants to buy my collection.) Fans have been backstabbed by the company. Going forward, I'm sure we'll see space marines with new armor that includes frilly yellow tutus, beige ballet slippers, and pink & purple clown masks.
Warmachine hordes looks very good - just seems bit harder to get stock ? And be cool when can print cards off app ?
For the moment just walking away from Custodes.
Lore is great, GW is garbage.
Was great. And I'm not speaking about the most recent retcon
yea I want to get back in, but waaaay too expensive no matter which way you go. Every game no matter the size starts with $100-150 in books before you buy your first model. Then the models are crazy expensive and most aren't cross compatible between in different games.
My group now plays Bolt Action and BattleTech. $100 plus some 3d printing and I have 2 full armies ready to go. No chasing new codex's. No Chapter approved. We can play loose with the models and terrain. I miss warhammer, but I refuse to put my family in the poor house chasing such a restrictive hobby. Lore is cool, but I take what I want from it, leave out what I don't, and change as I see fit. It doesn't matter much to me personally.
I've walked away from GW, not 40k. The older editions are still there and are still fun to play
No. I have always just engaged in the book and video game side of the hobby with the occasional joytoy action figure.
Nah I'm just playing mebsg until they screw that one up haha.
And I'll be honest, just getting the minature and painting it without so much assembly is actually quite relaxing.
I played WH40k a long time ago but I walked away from it after it got totally rec coned the lore.
I played battletech since the 80’s. I still play battletech and I have a an extensive library of mechs that I have created over the years that are better then the book made mechs.
I walked away when they destroyed warhammer fantasy. I just came back and bought the Bretonnia box like a month ago. Now I’m back to cutting them out again. 😒
Why
I’m kinda bummed out that you did not mention Mantic game’s Warpath universe
Infinity the game is the way!
As much as I'm in favor of people giving niche games a shot, I don't like how "more women in Warhammer" is the reason for this conversation. Plus, it's not like Warhammer 40K is the only war game with woman soldiers in it. Are we gonna have this conversation again when people find out that, in Battletech, the Elementals include 8-foot tall hyper-muscular men AND women, for example? How far are we going with this?
You are incorrect in the conversation being "more/women in Warhammer"
That is what the side that wishes to destroy the hobby wants you to believe.
This is about Games Workshop changing the lore to suit some political messaging when it is unnecessary. Never had an issue with Sisters of Battle, Sisters of Silence, Inquisition, women in Dark Eldar/Eldar and the Imperial Guard who have women in them.
Do not fall for their tricks. Protect the lore from revisionists.
I gave GW the boot then the killed Warhammer Fantasy as I completed my Wood elf army. It took me 2 years & the equivalent of more than n months salary & just like that the game was dead.
Walked away 5 years ago and never looked back. Been involved in the genre since 1985 and never been so disappointed in recent years
Already have
GW is absolute garbage. That said despite what a company may do to the ip under their protection, the lore is whatever the fans make it, theycan pick and choose, th3y can stop it at whatever point they want. The fact is almost nothing in Warhammer lore, either 40k or fantasy is anything remotely original. Being all archetypes and tropes is where it derives it's strength, but it also means any fan can find alternatives that scratch their particular itch very easily. Of course I also look forward to the strengthening of games that will increase the market and competition.
I am out. This was my red line. I know, deep down, that i just dont enjoy DEI influenced storytelling. It's not a preference, its an instinctual reaction. I will choose to remember my custom built 10k of space marines as true SONS of the (Male) Emperor.
3d printers unite!
I still play D&D 3.5/PF 1e using the D20pfsrd. Our world is what we make it, and it's a multiverse mashup of Dragonlance/Forgotten Realms/Dark Sun. I didn't get into 40K until I played Space Hulk for Vita. The Lore fascinated me, as I am sure it did for many other men. I don't mind retconning if it makes sense or doesn't fundamentally change the way the world works. This was different. We all know this is just the first step towards female Space Marines and Primarchs. Don't kid yourself and think this means nothing. The number of women that play and lore-delve 40K is infinitisimal compared to the number of men that play and the 40K world (and D&D, for that matter) only does itself a disservice by inviting activists and the lunatic fringe into this hobby. GW is about to join the graveyard full of IPs that have drank from the cup of repressive tolerance.
Dark Sun is so good.
@@UnbeltedSundew I agree. The soil and sun being as much of an enemy as that gang of Half-Giants over there is very appealing while I sip my room-temp Mt. Dew.
Yep, there shit to expensive and easy to print
while my main interest in warhammer is the lore so haven't bought anything apart from games given they can't even try and make the lore even semi consistant and change it for very whimsical or even idiotic reasons one of my main draws to it kinda gets damaged from that as well as many who support them with various fanworks have been for years targeted unjustly by GW weather its full fanfics like text to speech or being hostile towards lore channels GW for sure has issues in regards to priorities and such
and in regards the addition of female custodies they not only make it so one of the only 2-3? only male organizations in the setting is mixed now but from my understanding many of the all female organizations have been pushed to the side in favor of things like female cusodies plus i bet in regards to any official art they will mainly be female in word only and will be the very masculine looking females that can't even tell is female that is infecting everything lately along with similar related issues its just them getting involved with political BS instead of focusing on things they should
I'm not giving up on Warhammer.
I just refuse to support GW.
I'm advocating that we start our own websites dedicated to preserving the Warhammer lore, excluding anything and everything related to identity politics and DEI, use 3D printers to create our own models, and write and print our own codexes. We can keep the franchise alive and let GW go out of business.
3D printing has gotten so insanely easy. And you can use ANYTHING with One Page Rules System... which costs 10$ and is superior to WH40K rules.
Love how butt hurt some grognards get. Oh no not a retcon!!!😭
Retcon's have always been a part of 40k, from the beginning, some have been for the better and others for the worst. I've more of an issue with all the other points you've mentioned (Worker exploitation, how they destroyed the 40k fan animation community and the bit about models) than the Custodes controversy. I'm not walking away from the hobby (not a GW loyalist, just have many positive memories revolving around the game) but appreciate you shinning a spotlight on alternatives that don't always get the attention they deserve.
Nope
Save yourself the time, this is just an advert for anither few games.
No, I'm only walking away from GW and buying a 3D printer. I absolutely refuse to spend even one cent to woke companies. Go Woke, go broke.
I stopped playing a little after when Primarus came out. It was simply due to the fact that there are better Wargame rules, 40k is becoming a waste of time with how they manage the game and the Hobby was getting normie-nized so i kept getting bombarded with weird anime/fetish art in my feed on social media. I still love the universe for what I came to know it as.
With the new drama, at first i wasn't against Female Custodies and I was more concerned for how GW reacted to being questioned and their poor reasoning. Nothing new i guess. But the more i think about the lore, the more it bothers me.
Astartes and Custodes are tools of destruction. To bring in women gives them the greatest power in the universe. The power of Creation. Now, they with female custodies in the picture what stops them from becoming their own sub species of humans and overtaking humanity?
Have to take issue with your thumbnail. Battletech is in even worse shape than warhammer right now thanks to catalyst game labs
Not really, dei fanfic bs not withstanding, the rules are still stable, models still don't go out of style, and it is still extremely affordable.
Plastic doesn't know a gender.
The problem is with the community managers and the coup they ran.
@@Kyle7565 oh I'm aware. But not like they can really damage the game itself as long as the rules stay true. My Capellans will score crits regardless of you mech's paint scheme:)
If people are really upset about a retcon, it makes me wonder where they draw the line. Will people drop Pathfinder 2e for retconning Drow and like... dragons? This, in the grand scheme of things, is miniscule compared to the actually bad things that gw does in their regular practice. The only thing it changes is a few throw-away lines about 'sons of terra'. Unlike with Space Marines, there has never been any lore explicity stating that Femstodes cannot exist.
Drawing the line here seems incredibly sus, and tbh, im a little disapointed. Ive loved this channel for years, and this is the first bad take ive seen from it.
That being said, Battletech is amazing and people should check it out.
First they came for Star Wars and YOU said nothing.... for you were not a Star Wars fan.
@thehat4244 I didn't say anything cause other than shitty writing, Nothing was wrong with it.
@@theangrysumoyou obviously can't see where this is going, so let me know when they are done ravaging BattleTech, I will speak up, even if you will not.
@@thehat4244 where do you think it's going? How is the addition of femstodes the death knell of the hobby and not all the other bad business?
Exactly Sumo. Agree 100%
Turnip28 is such a fun setting and game! I dabbled in it a few months ago because of 40k burnout, and the opportunity to kitbash or convert an entire army and not have to care about what they look like was pretty great. If you want a game where everyone is shitty and terrible at their jobs, with huge Monty Python vibes, I recommend
