    I don’t usually comment, but today…I am compelled to. Thank you Mary for all your wisdom and helpful advice. Because of your channel-this is what I was able to do. I found a frozen 16# Turkey at a discount store for $13…..I used a coupon and bought it for $10.20!
    I made 4 quarts of canned Turkey, 7 Quarts of Turkey Bone broth….and enough shredded Turkey for 12 Other meal servings ( 6 lunch/6 dinners). We had BBQ “pulled Turkey” Sandwiches, Tacos and salads). My grocery bill for 1 week ( to serve 2 adults) was $40.00! ( just a week ago! During this horrible inflation!). Thank you so much! ♥️♥️♥️
    ( oh…and fed the cat some too😂)

      If everyone would take note, learn and do the work needed NO ONE would be going hungry !
      Years ago when I was married and my kids were young we were dirt poor and I did the kinds of things you just did. I would (roughly) figure out how much each plate cost or how many meals I could make out of something, I would tell my kids and would get an eye roll. Now as adults when I hear them mention how many meals they get from something compared to eating out, I give them a little smirk…..I again get an eye roll when they realize they are like me !!! Heehee

    I am so proud - with your help I now have 6-8 months of food stored for my family (which is hubby and then FOUR college student/yound adults) That has been alot of work and money but feel so much better and am so thankful I found you!       I just came from one of those fear mongering channels. When I clicked onto it I thought it would offer valuable NEW information. Instead it rehash ongoing OLD conflicts to sell the world war 3 we are all going to die in a war with China, click bait.
      Seeing this video in my queue was like seeing the sun coming out on a rainy day.
      You are so sensible, sane, and helpful. I’m grateful for you and my clique of homesteaders like Jess from Roots and Refuge, Becky from Acre Homestead. And then there is time and money management people…
      I wish I could have been exposed to people like you as a child. You validate the fact that I have the ability and RIGHT to control my own actions in reaction to all the things I can’t. And to make things easier for myself.

    Because of you, I was able to send my oldest son back to college with a huge food supply. His college town is a food desert and he is always short on cash. I stocked up during sales and paid attention to prices, so I was able to give him some inexpensive, but high quality foods. He was so appreciative to be able to shop in Mom's pantry. ;)

    I laughed...my big pantry is a huge, strange shaped closet built on top of the slant of the basement stairs!! The previous owners Mom was 4ft 11. She had a little tiny 3 step custom ladder that she could climb up into it! Yes..I need to do inventory. Your timing, as always..spot on.

    My pantry has almost 8 months worth of food stored back and I've just been using some of it and rotating out old stock. Been preparing for something like this for 8 years. This isn't hoarding food, it is called prepping.

      With the new madrid fault disaster pending this year, PLEASE make sure your glass jars are on the floor and protected with something, like bubble wrap top/bottom/sides so they don't knock against each other and shatter.
      The initial earthquake is expected to be an 8 - 9 on the Richter scale. It will be one big jolt followed by smaller quakes. If you do not shatter proof your glass jars, you may end up with much less than 8 months worth of food.
      If wrapped and on shelves, include guard rails so they do not crash on the floor. If possible, make sure the shelves are anchored to the walls so they do not fall over.
      Have essentials, including mosquito nets, stored outside the home in the event your home is damaged. A single story structure will stand a better chance of not collapsing than a multi story building.
      Have tarps/ tents also stored outside if your home is damaged. And start thinking on how to stay warm during winter.
      Roads/bridges will be destroyed, and cities in shambles.

      "As we detailed recently when the Antarctica Plate shifted, there is a domino effect that will bring on the New Madrid finale. As is clear from recent quakes around Hawaii and further tilting of the Philippine Plate, the Pacific is compressing.
      The endless quakes on the Pacific side of the Indo-Australian Plate show this compression pressure, as does the recent quake on the Pacific side of the Nazca Plate. When the Antarctica Plate is pushed into the lower Atlantic, a void is created there that allows Africa to shift and drop into that void.
      The dropping weight of the Africa Plate forces the rock hook that reaches under Turkey to snap off, and this allows the Africa Plate to slide down along the Dead Sea plate border.
      The effect of this Africa Roll will include disasters all along the Mediterranean and a rupture at the Azores, creating a weakness there that will allow the N American Continent to straighten out, correcting the bow that was imposed on its western side.
      This triggers the New Madrid finale. This domino effect of Plate Movement is in process, but at some point in the near future, within 2022, will create the New Madrid finale."

      Africa is rolling and tearing at Gibraltar but most immportant the rock hook that extends from the Africa Plate under Turkey shows signs of getting ready to SNAP.
      These quakes on 6/3 and 6/4 are at the point the Zs identified for the break that will extend down to the Red Sea. When it all happens it will be SUDDEN."

    shopping the sales and clearance is a real money saver and I rarely look at anything else. Having a stocked pantry gives me that luxury. I recently opened one of those bricks of coffee with the air removed. Had overlooked it in my pantry. It was dated 2015! I made a pot of coffee with it and it was very fresh tasting. I was so surprised. So don’t just throw something out before giving it the sniff test. I use my older pastas without issue. I have a huge garden so I forced myself to pressure can this year. Now I can dried beans too which is a money saver and the quality is far superior to buying canned beans. I have so much more flexibility in what I put up from my garden and even farmers markets besides using the freezer or water bath canning. Amazing what we can make with basic easy crops of tomatoes, potatoes peppers, onions, berries and rhubarb and herbs!!

      My maternal grandparents joined the church in 1914 in rural western Louisiana. They had been married for 3 years, and had two small children (ended up with 12...my mom is the 10th of the 12). Clearly...they raised their children through the Great Depression...and were none too popular as members of the Church. My grandfather helped hide missionaries from being tarred and feathered...yes, really!!!
      At some point around 1950, their branch president was visiting his branch members to see who was prepared via food storage. My grandfather kept a smokehouse and corn crib, and my grandmother's larder was jam-packed with home canned foods. The 2 acre garden was across the road in front of the house. After he stuck his head in the larder, he came out saying "I guess I don't have to worry about you!"
      I was pleased to hear that my 91-year-old mother--who has always had food and supplies on hand--had gone shopping for yet MORE canned goods and other things a few months ago and was filling up a rolling can rack that my dad and uncle built about 1970. My siblings and I have followed in their footsteps...although I'm the only one who knows how to water-bath and pressure-can foods. That's what I get for being the oldest. 😀

    We went to Costco yesterday and found an 8 lb. Pork loin for 1.99/lb.! I cut it up into about 12 3-4 oz. Chops and 3 1 lb. roasts. We won’t need to buy pork for months!

    Great advice!! I'm 63, and started looking at my old grocery recipes years ago. There are items that even the home cooking home maker uses only on occasion.Its easy to forget those items. I also keep a running list, hung some where convenient, like frig or cabinet ,of any item I run low or run out of.

    keeping a good eye on your pantry is a great tip. Today I remembered that I bought some rhubarb - just in time ...
    I don't save all my receipts from the shops but I do write the price for all items on my shopping list. It's amazing how often a shop will forget that a certain item was advertised to be on sale ...
    It is also a great way to get a good idea on what I pay for food. This summer I was surprised to see that spareribs that I used to buy for 5-6 Euro are now priced at 7-9 Euro for the same amount of ribs 😮

      No one is laughing now. I remember there was a tv show a long time ago that highlighted a lad who would be today called a prepper. She also made sure to have plenty of medical supplies on hand.     The advice to add rolled oats as a meal/meat extender is great advice; however, for those who may have never tried this technique, I wanted to add a quick note that some may find helpful to keep in mind. This is not intended to be a criticism nor should in any way be perceived as being a negative commentary. It’s just an FYI kind of thing. Individual experiences and opinions may vary greatly.
    My personal experience with using rolled oats as a filler for ground beef (or any rich ground meat - lamb, bison, mullet, deer, etc.):
    When I got married (the first time!) and was perfecting my cooking skills, my then-husband preferred his mother’s meatloaf recipe over my own mother’s meatloaf recipe. The main difference between his mother’s meatloaf and my mother’s was the binder that each mom used. My mother-in-law used rolled oats, whereas my mom used crushed saltines or toasted stale bread slices torn into tiny pieces. My mother-in-law added milk to her mixture; my mom used additional tomato sauce. Not a big deal. We are in Texas, but my mother-in-law was originally from Illinois. My mom was born and raised in Texas. Maybe the differences in the two moms’ recipes were simply a matter of geography and region. I don’t know. I never looked into it.
    My preference was for my own mother’s meatloaf because that’s what I grew up eating. The same applied to my husband. Being a very young wife back then, I wanted to please my husband, especially in the early years of our marriage. So when I made meatloaf, I would basically cook his mom’s version, except I used more tomato sauce instead of milk (because I just couldn’t stomach that concept at the time). But I did use the oatmeal instead of the crackers or bread.
    I could really taste the difference! I never really got used to it, either. I’ve never detected the taste of crackers or bread or bread crumbs in meatloaf using those as binders/fillers, but I could clearly taste the oatmeal in the meatloaf that I made back then. To me, it was a distinctly different flavor, and frankly, it tasted like meatloaf mixed with oatmeal!
    I don’t know if I had inadvertently planted a psychosomatic into my mind at that time, and since he and I’ve been divorced for 20 years now, I’ve not made or had “oatloaf” in all those years. I’ve happily enjoyed my own meatloaf recipe that’s somewhat based on my mom’s since then, which does not contain oatmeal or milk.
    I offer this much too long story to advise anyone who may be interested to know that while using oatmeal as a meatloaf filler/binder is a healthy, economical, and essentially great idea, some people who may be particularly sensitive to even subtle flavors, or southern people in general, might be able to detect the oatmeal flavor in the cooked meatloaf.
    I’ve long used bread crumbs in my meatloaf. I prefer seasoned bread crumbs and I typically use Progressive (Progresso?) Panko Italian Bread Crumbs, or the store brand equivalent. I’ve also made my own seasoned bread crumbs using leftover French baguette, ciabatta or focaccia.
    If this helps someone, I’m glad. If it was a waste of my time to write and your time to read, my apologies. 😊

      Cheryl, this was so interesting & made me chuckle. Yrs. ago I read the book "A Tree Grows in Brooklyn". The mother, Mary Nolan, early 1900's made a baked loaf from damaged bread that the bakery gave away free at end of week. I made it for the family in hard times. Added egg and whatever was left in the icebox. Baked with catsup on top. We called it Mary Nolan loaf and when it had onions, powder or dried granules in it, smelled sooo good baking, to 3 hungry little people. 💖

    I have been watching and using so many of your tips and knowledge in the last year since. I started watching you to help feed economically and nutritiously my 4 kids. Feeding 3 teenage boys and a little one can be a struggle on the budget. I grew up an only child who ate mostly processed foods and fast food. Learning to cook good homecooked food has become a necessity but, turned into a huge joy! I love knowing I have fed my kids, family and sometimes friends something that was economical and really good for them! What a wonderful resource you are! Thank you so much!! In these struggling times, I find it soooooo encouraging to know I have Mary in my back pocket of tools to figure out a way to make things work! Just the other day I stretched 1 lb of meat over 6 people and everyone was full and satisfied! For pennies!

    So many great ideas to help us when feeding ourselves and our families. When you were talking toward the end about using any chicken still on the bones, it reminded me of a ham bone I used just this week. I had frozen the bone left from a ham we had a few months ago. This week I used it in a pot of pinto beans. My favorite way to cook pintos starts in my pressure cooker. I simply put in the unsoaked beans and a few seasonings, added the still frozen ham bone, covered them all with water and pressure cooked them on high for the recommended 22 minutes. Once they were done, I put everything into my slow cooker, added more water, and continued cooking them on low for about 5 hours. It is amazing how much creamier that extra time in the slow cooker makes them. Anyway, back to my ham bone! As I was removing the bone from the beans, meat began falling off of it. I used a fork and began to scrape off the remaining ham. I originally meant to just use the bone as flavoring since I thought I had cut off all of the meat before I froze the bone, but I ended up with almost 2 cups of delicious ham to add to my beans. What a wonderful surprise.

    You will never know how much I appreciate all the work you do for us to help us keep within our food budgets. I have learned to shop long term pantry items from sale flyers as well as regular weekly groceries. I used to shop groceries once a month but have started to shop weekly since prices are fluctuating week to week.

    Thank you, Mary another wonderful video. You always have very helpful ideas. I have always raised gardens and herb gardens and canning, freezing, fermenting, making sourdough. I have also raised pastures chickens for the last 48 years. I love the way you meet people where they are and understand that not all people have enough in their budget to buy all organic. I myself found leg quarters on sale for $.49 lb and bone in chicken breasts for $1.35 lb. I bought 40lbs of each to pressure can . I myself are on a fixed income due to having cancer and by buying my chicken on sale was much better for my budget than butchering some of my own right now. My parents were in their late teens during the Great Depression and my mother had to deal with food rationing and not to waste and how to stretch food and money. You are doing very important work by teaching these spoiled generations how to stretch their dollar and food because what most don’t understand about how many people were starving because there was very little to be had. The comments toward you have been ugly today and they will have an understanding of how just how hard things are in a very short period of time, especially when stores no longer have that $25.00 chicken on the shelf. Thank you again. I really needed your help on the grains.

    Thanks Mary this is a great video. Lately it seems harder and harder with gas prices on the rise and food prices as well. I find meal planning works great to save money. I also pick up any food thats on sale and a great buy to stock up. I try to make everything from scratch as well. You have taught me a lot Mary . God bless you🌺

    I heartily approve of the concept of "multiple streams of food." This is wonderful. I follow this but have never heard it put into words like you did. Having multiple streams of food really reinforces our food security. There are times when the main cook of the house is tired, ill, or unavailable and this extends her (or his) efforts in the kitchen while keeping within the budget.

      Always a good idea to have multiple ways of accomplishing the same goal. I am now focusing more on adding more fruit trees and bushes to the garden. I cannot believe how expensive fresh herbs are nowdays, $5.99 for a two inch pot at my local nursery, glad I bought a lot of seed packets.

    Hi, Mary…I enjoy your videos. Thanks for sharing! 👍🏻❤️ Regarding saving grocery receipts…I have saved them for years. Every year is a new file for that year…everything from food to medicines, etc. Especially prescriptions, or anything medical per their lists…our medical insurance will reimburse up to $1K a year. The reason why I save grocery receipts, our family has gone through a major earthquake here in California…and once, a freezer that went out caused by contract workers replacing our wooden floors, etc. Regarding the loss of our freezer goods…because I had receipts of the contents, we were reimbursed $600 at that time. Our homeowners insurance company will replace these things of loss. A lot of people do not realize this if you are a homeowner or apartment dweller if you have insurance for your house valuables.

    Mary, I tried growing vegetables scraps and it didn’t work to produce any fruit. However, I would like to say, the scraps did produce seeds. I just let the carrots 🥕 grow and grow until it went to seed!! I had tons and tons of seeds!!!!

    I purchase a few things each week, and I have been stocking up since 2021, that way I only buy what I run low on, don’t run out, I also buy materials to make, my own foods using your videos, and freeze. Also found videos on depression cooking, to extend food. I’m a diabetic so I stock up on sugar substitutes.

I think it's especially helpful to those who are just beginning to become more thrifty and less wasteful.     Listening to you makes me think of something I have done for years. I do what’s called a price diary. I only buy when it’s at the absolutely the lowest price I can purchase a product for. This is how I know I’m buying at the best price possible while stocking my pantries. Thanks for your content.

    Hey Mary, I didn't know I had the makings of a traditional foods kitchen, but I'm happy I was well on my way. I have a freeze dryer so that has helped me a great deal. I have learned so much and shared your videos. I've saved on space too. Growing my own herbs from an old carriage wheel has been my latest fun project. Many thanks for you gentle teaching mannner.     One little tidbit I’d like to point out on the picture of the shelf label at Walmart. Pay attention to the number in that bright orange square in the upper right hand corner. That’s the “unit price” ( cost per ounce or cost per pound etc.) and will help you determine the most cost effective brand and size. Most people just look at the larger printed overall cost of the product. When I first found that out years ago it really did change how I shopped.

      This is true BUT be aware that most stores are inconsistent on how they calculate the unit price. One item might show cost per ounce and a similar item right next to it will be cost per pound. It's best to calculate unit price for yourself.

    I might suggest that homesteaders like us have a fifth corner, and that is our root cellar. This is more challenging, as we are constantly trying to manage humidity, temperature, and rotation. Some years are better than others, and we might have to combat vermin, etc. I appreciate your videos and knowledge! I wish I had someone like you to talk to when I first starting homesteading decades ago. Back then it was all word of mouth and scouring the library and bookstore for ancient knowledge long forgotten, and of course Storey's publishing was the main contemporary source. Thank you.
