    Pioneer Woman turned me on to the idea of using bandannas for cloth napkins. They are cheap and don’t show stains. My decor isn’t western but I still use bandannas.

    I buy a stack of inexpensive washcloths for napkins. They can be moistened when you have sticky food. They wash so well. When they become too stained for company, they become rags.

    For Tip #4 (Buy local). Besides farmer markets I would also include local businesses. A small, family-owned local bakery near me also runs a thrift store right out of the factory. All the bread there is $1. Bread can be frozen very easily. I'm also lucky because flour milling is a big business where I live (Kansas City). The flour mill that makes King Arthur Flour is here and they sell their overstocks through their own thrift store. I only bake with King Arthur and I can buy it for $1.50 for a 5lb bag. (Normally over $4 at the store.)

    When I was an exchange student, each person in the family had a different napkin ring. We used our cloth napkins for about a week unless someone made a mess. So economical!

    I went into my store last weekend and realized that these carts full of food as you enter was the clearance products. They had the organic canned pumpkin for $.99 and didn’t expire for a year and a half. Those cans cost $3.49 regularly.

      Not really an expiration date, but a best by date. Should be good for 1 - 2 years after as long as can is not dented or seal broken.

    My farmers market is very expensive. The produce tastes so much better than the grocery store. The produce in the store has no taste and goes bad so fast (since the pandemic)

    A friend who is a firefighter told me that they always go to our local Kroger's between nine and ten in the morning, because that's when they stock the "Manager's Special" markdowns in the meat dept. I went one morning and sure enough, there were deals to be had!

    Mary I love your channel! You've helped me so much in my journey to feeding my family more frugally and healthier as well. I've got a sourdough starter going, made 3 loaves of bread from it this week! Also have started canning bone broth from a whole chicken I roasted in my crockpot! Made my own ACV this past Fall and made some sauerkraut in January. Yogurt is next on my list to make. I'm taking it slow and trying to learn something new every month.     We have silicone mats for our cookie sheets and a variety of silicone mats in different shapes, sizes and thicknesses to use for placing hot pots or pans on a table as well as taking hot lids off of those pots and pans. So we rarely ever use wax paper or parchment paper anymore. This also saves us laundry money, as we used to buy a lot of fabric hot pads and pot holders. My oldest daughter taught herself to knit and then taught me and my younger daughter learned to crochet, so we now knit and crochet our own washclothes for kitchen and bath. They are definitely more durable than store bought cloths and can be customized.

      @@lorik8923 my daughter just uses the cotton "dishcloth" yarn (worsted or 4 weight, cotton yarn) and we find them to work for face or body cloths. Especially since cotton softens with use. It provides some exfoliation without being too harsh, even on the face. (The cotton acrylic blends, like premier yarns cotton are a bit softer if desired)

    In my area of Southern California standard groceries are not stocking meat bones, chicken feet, etc. However Asian and other ethnic markets do carry these things.

    Sprouts are easier than microgreens. So if someone doesn't even want to do microgreens they should look into sprouts. You don't even need a sun for this. My daughter is growing them in the winter and using them in place of lettuce.

    Per ounce price is a game changer for learning kitchen economics. I'm teaching my son this now and showing him how to break everything down that way and not to just look for something that looks cheaper. I have him sit with me when I shop online and we open several windows and cost compare for bulk items. We live rurally and it's much cheaper to get items delivered right now then drive 25 miles to get them. We then make a whole day of it once or twice a month for fresh items and all other errands, it saves quite a bit of money and time doing it this way. I know a lot of people go to the store with a firm list and that is all they will buy. But, if you can be flexible and make meals around what is on sale instead it does save a lot. I always will buy what they have and sometimes it's twenty five pounds of chicken and then freeze everything or can for later. We still are eating off of fifty pounds of ground turkey I got from last year that was vacuum sealed chubs that were .99. Where I live meat rarely is cheap so I buy when I can.     I love using cloth napkins for everything! They make great dish/kitchen towels! I always find beautiful brand napkins at the thrift store! Many times brand new! Also you can do a quick pre soak in a bucket if you have some really soiled ones! Mary I just love you knowledge!

    Observing our failures charitably, and devising plan B are good muscles to develop: I just put a landscape material cover over my raised bed for the afternoons to take the intensity of the afternoon heat off. Sprouting fruit and veg for fall was flagging already after starting really strong. So home canning this week will be of purchased organic fruits and veg (until my crops fruit), and I am dehydrating more mushrooms, which are a great deal right now, but get expensive in fall. Markdown days are a smart idea too. And if your herbs are plentiful now, it's a great time to make herb infusions for simple remedies, like thyme oil, oregano oil, lemon balm for tea, basil salt, etc. That way they're ready for fall!

    As usual, thanks for the tips Miss Mary. My husband used to be a paper towel freak. It would just make me cringe to see him rip a paper towel wipe his clean hands, and toss it right in the trash 🥺! Some days the trash can would be full of mostly paper towels. We'll, I got him off of that FINALLY when I told him how much money he was wasting. Those micro fiber cloths are great as dishcloths, cleaning, napkins, etc, so that's what we use now. I work at HEB, and the clearance section is always my first stop. I NEVER buy paper plates and utensils unless it's on that clearance shelf, and at our store, things can be marked down 75-90%. Especially when there is a "reset". Those items have to be gotten rid of to make room for the new products.
    Also, another way I have found to save money, is thru our local food pantry. It has been a lifesaver when my husband and I were both out of work due to the you know what. They get donations from all the major grocery stores as well as Whole Foods, and Sprouts. Not Walmart, though. They have fresh food, produce, bread, and even desserts if one is inclined. You can go once a day, and if you become a "client" you go once a month and are given enough food to last. It has been a great way for me to say money on groceries, and save for my goal of getting out of this apartment and moving to our own land.

    For those who have no yogurt maker, may I suggest Kefir? No need to scald the milk, no need to keep it warm. After about 24 hours on the counter, strain out the kefir "grains" that look like mini cauliflower heads, and refrigerate the rest. I put this on my morning fruit (fresh or dried, depending on the season) with a few nuts and a bunch of cinnamon, use as a substitute for any fermented dairy product such as buttermilk or sourmilk, or just drink it plain or with some concentrated cherry juice.

    I was at the grocery store today and found 2 dollars off each package of meat. I got good quality sausage for 2.50 a pack and pork stirfry for 1.30 a pack and then marinating steaks (which I have no idea what to do with other than use them in a soup) worked out to less than 2 dollars each package. While they are not huge amount each package weighs at least 1 pound.

    I’ve also quite buying paper towels, by in large. We only use them for catching freeze from fried foods, and then one layer with news paper under it to catch the bulk of the grease.
    From here and there I’ve gotten a stack of restaurant paper napkins for the odd time I feel I need a paper towel.

    I've been finding good produce mark downs in one of the grocery stores nearby. Most of it is fine for our chickens! For instance $1.30 for 3 green peppers and 64 cents for cherry tomatoes!

    Some families at church have gotten together with our family on three occasions to purchase a cow. The men together learned (on CZcams) how to butcher a cow. Everyone walks away with about 90lbs of meat for about $2-2.50 per pound or less and with more skills. The men also learned together how to can beef and beef stew...and how to make sausages.

    I agree that finding things on sale or clearance, is much cheaper than meal planning. Maybe the more one cooks, the more one sees that? Being locked into a meal per day just doesn't work for us. We just keep stocked up on what we use. An example would be instead of one bottle of ketchup in the frig, we date them and get 3 - 4 and put in pantry when they go on sale. This stocking up this much has really helped us. Pantry is full, but not overflowing. Use up baskets are kept on the counter and that's where we start when starting a meal.

      Great question! It is exactly like Dana said. Back in the day there wasn’t any Facebook but there was yahoo. So I created a group… It was a group of two… Me and my son… And I basically waited to see if anyone would join. Next thing I knew, people were joining and saying they were so grateful that there was a homeschool group in our area! I told them that it was completely new and I was just forming it but let’s get together and have a meeting as to what we can do and what we can plan for the children. It just started like that and next thing I knew it grew and grew and grew. I had lots of nice friends in the group but there was a small core group with whom we all shared the nourishing traditions mindset and those were the ones that we would get together with on Saturday and cook and make a plan for how to order in bulk.       Don't be afraid to check into private schools, I found a really awesome one an it's not to expensive. Very small an lot one on one.Best choice ever. My biggest issue with homeschool is finding a good UNBRELLA that's not expensive an curriculum I could afford

      Hi Rebecca, The one food I have tried multiple times and I have never been able to develop a taste for is okra! Isn’t that too funny! My husband and son love gumbo and love fried okra… Anyway it’s served up… And I’ll certainly eat it, if I have to, but it’s definitely not my first choice. Love, Mary❤️🤗❤️

    Mary here's a question that I've never seen discussed. I've been making wonderful sourdough bread but since I'm the only one who eats it, I put half in the freezer. However, even my half loaf goes stale within a couple of days. what have you found to be the best way to store homemade bread? Did the bread boxes of old really work?

      What I do with my homemade bread is slice the whole thing, then freeze. Take each slice out as needed.

      Bread boxes help, and artisan bread bakers always store loaves in paper sacks.

      I think bread boxes work, but it still stales quickly if there is no fat in the bread. I add two Tbsp butter or oil and a few Tbsp dried whole milk in my sourdough loaves. I sometimes use a tea towel to wrap the bread and place in the microwave. Milk softens the crumb, and the fat preserves the moisture too.

      You could always divide the loaf before baking and cook half and freeze half then take out the night before and let rise then bake.

    Thank you Mary, great tips! I wish I could eat seafood. I decided to not eat seafood unless I know it's not from the Pacific. Fukushima is still an issue. I'm moving to my new house on acreage soon and will get my organic family farm up and running. We're getting there just in time to begin growing our food before things get bad. I'm extremely concerned about out farmers and their ability to farm and keep cattle. Seems the perfect storm is brewing.

      Check out James Prigioni here on yt he has a video on building small hoop houses for raised beds to garden all year. I'm adding mine soon before the cold comes and planting greens, carrots, beets etc, cold weather crops.

    When I'm comparing similar cans, I compare the nutrients that I'm looking for. For example Tuna: I don't compare the price per can, I compare the price per gram of protein. Two identical looking cans can have different amounts of protein. Sometimes it's cheaper to buy the name brands, sometimes it's not.

    Some food only comes in plastic, for example peanut butter. I save those containers and use them to store other items. Especially left over soup or chilli to freeze for another day.

    As preppers we need to store plastic utensils and disposables in case water is scarce. No way to wash cutleries, plates. Wooden ones get moldy when stored too long.

    I have a chef Emeril breD machine, air fry we r, 3 sizes of crock pots, pots/pans/electric And deep dish skillet pan. Hot lots of baking ware pans left from my s ister, cupcake pans, cookie sheets ,dessert or call it small loaf bread pans, mini deep fryer, juicers, blenders, electric appliances fo r mixers and that. I could learn someday to be 70% gourmet cook.

    Great video, hello from Ireland.... here in Ireland the farmers market would sell a free range chicken for 16 euro when i can get a free range chicken in lidl or aldi for 5 or 6 euro, farmers markets here are very expensive, cant get raw milk or anything like that...and if you could find raw milk it would be 3 euro for a pint..

I have one other mama friend I link up with every other month for an azure standard order, but this is a great alternative idea for larger needs!

    Also learn how to cook a large variety of vegan meals. many of them are wonderful and flavorful options. We can make a ton of them including polenta, lemon garlic noodles and vegan natchos with avocado cream. we buy bulk cans of sardines (18 cans) all the time and use them sparingly in pasta dishes to stretch them out. great advice here.

    Thanks for sharing. If your local grocery doesn't sell the less desirable produce there are services like Misfits Market and Imperfect Foods. Heard about them from various channels I follow. One channel I follow gets free ox tails from a rancher who doesn't use that part. We're doing well. Still need to save up some more to get the three of us a home in good condition.

    I remember a bunch of ladies coming over to our house every so often, going through the San Francisco Herb Company catalog, and writing down what they wanted. Later a big box (or sometimes 2 or 3) would show up, and mom and I would divvy out what each person wanted.
    If you don't have a social circle for bulk buying, you can also look at local facebook or maybe twitter pages (not certain if that last one is a thing) , or local areas on other social media. I recommend whoever is making the purchase ensure you have the money from everyone else before you make the purchase. Especially with people you don't know. Not because they are untrustworthy, but if they want to put in $50, and something happens so they can't do that by the time you get the product, can you afford to cover their portion?
    If you can't afford to buy/can't find cloth napkins, cut up an old "dead" t-shirt or similar. Check the absorbency of the cloth. I find these make great cleaning cloths too. (I grew up quite poor.)
