      If platic buckets are not rodent proof, then I don't understand why people do not use galvanized trash bins for long term food storage. They are not food grade, but we could put food in a mylar bags plus some sort of insert, so food wouldn't touch it. Is there some sort of negative to using them? People store bird seed and animal feed in them, so why not food for humans?

  • @sillililli01
    @sillililli01 Před 3 lety +34

    Note: DE (diatomaceous earth), has to be Food Grade, is an excellent solution to bed bugs, safe for your children and pets. When we purchased our home, the previous owners, left it very clean, which was appreciated. However, they had an infestation, which was not visible, of bed bugs. Bed bugs come out to feed every six weeks or so, and they hide behind baseboards, creases of bed mattresses, carpets, etc. I used DE and laid down a line around the baseboard (using a used/cleaned mustard plastic container), sprinkled it on the mattress, making sure to get every crevice, and, then put clean linen over it. It did a fantastic job of getting rid of the bugs. I repeated monthly just to ensure that I got any new bugs hatching. We've been bug-free for years. Mary thank you for all that you do to educate us on living a wholesome life.

    I've been doing this for about 12 years, something that I've learned...If you're going to use gamma lids, check them often...Myself and several other people have had problems with them cracking (for no obvious reason)...Personally, (since I rotate my food storage) I have "storage" buckets with regular lids, and "working" buckets with gamma lids...when I open a storage bucket I transfer the contents to a working bucket that I'm taking stuff out of...(less worry about the lids, and I can change them out pretty quick if one cracks on a working bucket)...

    • @faith4390

    I use the metal popcorn tins I get at Christmas to storage mylar bags with food. I also use two stripes of double sided tape with diatomaceous earth on it. I didn’t know about the bay leaves. Excellent and informative video thanks Mary.

  • @cherylcarter6426
    @cherylcarter6426 Před 3 lety +11

    Diatomaceous Earth is made up of diatoms, which are ancient fossilised creatures and it is also silica. Diatomaceous Earth is good internally, but not good to breathe in. I use it in my chicken feed when I have some. I have noticed since I haven’t used it in their feed they have had more health problems. It is good to use around the chicken pen to keep insects out.

    What I do is freeze my rice for 2weeks and then bake them dry at 300°F, sift with a mesh strainer and store. This has worked for me by making sure they're extra dry and also that anything that may be in them is dead and sifted out.

Your knowledge of these things that you teach and share is nothing short of amazing to me. How completely full circle our need for knowledgeable, organized, REAL food skills has come. Our knowledge and understanding of all these aspects of kitchen, pantry/larder, and food itself has been become embarrassingly depleted. Thank goodness that you are here and prepared to teach sweetly! Thank you, Mary!

    Another way to snap the gamma ring on is leave in the warm sun for a while, then put ring on a hard flat surface open side up, then position bucket upside down over the ring. Use your body weight and/or a mallet to apply enough pressure to snap ring on - check that it is completely attached. It is just a bit more leverage for those of us who are older, not as strong and don't have a strong guy around when putting these together.
    Edit: use a clean, hard, flat surface, of course

    aluminum trash cans with lids are rodent proof --- not air tight but a good alternative for storing Mylar bags --- usually pretty affordable at a local tractor supply or farm supply store --- and available in several sizes for small to larger spaces

    I’ve been using the 5 gallon buckets to store all of my prep foods about 30 years. I have never use diatomaceous earth. To keep little critters out if I have a 50 pound bag of flour in the freezer for at least 24 hours preferably 48 that’ll do great. I opened up flower that was five years old and it tasted just like I got it at the store Bay leaves put a half a dozen bay leaves on top after you seal it in your plastic food grade bag. Or on top if no bag is used. It works amazing, if you have an Amish store bull bay leaves are a great price

    As a new Prepper primarily inspired by you, I began gathering extra staples this past Summer. I finally made room for a 5 shelf metal rack in our storage basement. Space is limited as this space also houses all of my extensive holiday decorations and catering supplies. I have tons of jelly, pickle jars, etc. that I have saved. Since I neither have a lot of room for buckets and do have to purchase them I am thinking that I will put as much as I can into these “found jars” along with the many jelly jars I have from years of making jams and jellies. I do have plastic storage tubs and there is room for them on the floor under the multiple shelves and metal racks that I have in my store room. So, I think I can put things into my excessive jars, use oxygen absorbers in them, then put all of these jars into the plastic tubs. My tubs have wheels, so they can bed heavy but on the cement floor I can pull them out, open, get what I want,and snap on the lid and push back under the shelf. Do you see anything faulty with my thinking? I am 77 my husband is 82….we are in generally good health, but our strength is decreasing….and lifting large heavy buckets is something we struggle with. Why at our age am I becoming a Prepper? We live at 8,600 feet (our home is at that level, many other things go much higher around us. It is cold (outside only), we get snow September through May. I love to cook and cook from scratch. We have freezers and refrigerators, yes plural. We have never had difficulty getting to a grocery store in our lovely Rocky Mountain town, but we are getting to where when it is down in single digit temperatures and snowy/icy we would just prefer to not go out for more than we need to. We have a very large home, and it houses many of our interests and hobbies. Then, with the world political issues, and climate issues, we have set ourselves up on how to cook and stay warm without electricity should that every become necessary, or simply desirable. So, our long term storage is in the form of freezer, and dehydrated and freeze dried, and at this point, commercially canned meats. We prefer fresh fruits and veggies and meats….but I have all the basics to make our favorite meals through that long term storage. I have a Kitchen Garden,and have been expanding what we grow reasonably successfully, and it is adequate for two seniors. I also have mylar bags so think that should work with my tub system as well. ? We have no rodent issues, and very few, if any, bugs. We are very low humidity up here. I am not storing whole grain flours for long term, or brown rice. I use them, but if I run out for any reason I do not think it is all that crucial for survival. I do freeze my flours for a while before putting into long term storage. Then with oxygen absorbers. I do not have much interest in pressure canning, I MIGHT consider water bath canning….mostly concerned about maybe canning meats….especially good ground beef. But,that is in the future. I am praying that our country does not go into a real famine kind of situation. So, to get through potential limited power outages, or a few months of transportation strikes, etc. we are very very well set up. I keep watching you,and repeat many of your vlogs. I am finally retaining a lot of your information. Thank you!

      The big eggs are in the flour. They hatch and make the holes getting out of the container. If you freeze the flour for 2 weeks, and then take it out of the freezer for a couple of days before putting it in a airtight container it is better. If you use an oxygen absorber bugs can’t live in your container.

    • @jennit.i.murphy118
      @jennit.i.murphy118 Před 3 lety +4

      I start with 1/2 tsp for the first week, and increase the amount by 1/2 tsp each week until I get to 1 Tbsp and I stick with that amount for about 3-4 weeks. And then I take a break from it for about 2-3 months and then start the process all over. So basically it's a quarterly detox that I do.

      I love it as a detox, but when you mix it with your stored rice to kill the bugs as they hatch, do you not worry about eating the dead bugs/moths? Knowing they're laid on heavily chemically treated plants, has been my biggest hesitancy.

    • @jennit.i.murphy118
      @jennit.i.murphy118 Před 2 lety +2

      @@Chelarue I don't worry about that because I wash my rice, dry beans and lentils before I cook them.

    We found out that mice are much smarter than we thought they were. In the basement we had dried food stored in sealed canning jars without the rings. The little critters were able to pry up the sealed lids with their teeth. So far they have not tried to unscrew the rings, that we know of. Be sure to use the rings on the canning jars for long term storage

    IGLOO COOLERS CAN BE USED FOR FOOD STORAGE IN CASE THE POWER GOES OUT IN YOUR FREEZERS.
    Store plenty of bags of ice in a large freezer in case you need to use your IGLOO or YETI COOLERS FOR FROZEN FOODS WHEN YOU HAVE EXTENDED POWER OUTAGES.
    It may be a good idea to buy an extra freezer and a back-up battery (solar is good option) for this purpose.

    Hello Miss Mary.
    I love your channel. I’ve learned so much and it’s helped me with my long term storage.
    I have stored my dry goods in Mylar bags with oxygen absorbers inside of a metal trash can with a lid. The cans are then stored in my basement on two cinder blocks in case of flooding.
    I’ve heard that rats can eat through the metal but mice can not.
    Also when you put oxygen absorbers in Mylar bags it will suffocate the bugs and the eggs so they won’t hatch. That’s the best defense against bugs that I know of that’s full proof because the bugs need oxygen to breathe to survive.
    I can’t wait to watch more videos of yours!
    You are a wealth of knowledge you’re amazing to me with how much knowledge that you have on food value and storage.
    You’re incredible Miss Mary! ♥️

I was hesitant to eat it to begin with, but not anymore! I just made my second jar of krout this week. We are in the burping stage not. This time I followed your lead and made it wit extra water. We have been eating a small amount daily to build up our probiotics. I have completely used up my cauliflower, vegetables mixture . Careful on the gamma lids. The screw on top with the seal is made from two halves melted together. Where the two pieces come together there is usually some production flashing. There is where the problem lies. The flashing will push out the rubber seal or gasket allowing air and water to get in. I check mine, and if flashing is found I just sand the flashing down and then it’s ok. So check your lid by removing the gasket and look for that flashing.

I use a flat wood mallet and pound it down pack it keep pouring flour and pack it down tight all the way to the inch head space. And instead of putting a silica gel pack I add put a bay leaf, then crush dry coffee filter to absorb moisture and put a oxygen absorber then the lid and vacuum saver adapter and vacuum seal it with my Foodsaver Gamesaver silver vacuum sealer. Mary, It looks like you have the same food saver machine there on your island that I have. I just discovered I can use the vacuum accessory on that machine to vacuum seal the jars, just like you do the hand held vacuum machines you demonstrate.
    It took some trial and error, but I have discovered if you push down on it firmly and hit the accessory button to turn it on, it works! You will hear the change in sound as well to let you know.
    Just wanted you to be aware in case your handheld fails, you can always use the vacuum accessory on the machine in a pinch if you press down really firm.

    Hey Mary, saw your video on food storage. A Great FYI, I have the identical “Food Saver” machine. You certainly can use it to seal jars like you did with the hand held devices. The hose gadget separates, but not where you thought, it separates where the black plastic part with the loop and hose attach, joins the clear plastic tube. Just rock it side to side and pull it apart. It then merely snaps back together.
