before my dad died at 90 yrs old, i was lucky enough to meet a few of his buddies who also landed on omaha beach. they were warm, humble, likeable gentlemen. thanks dad.

As an ex soldier this is very emotional what great Heroes they were
It's always an incredible sight to see a German and an American soldier communing together. But also an absolutely tragic reminder that some incredibly good men that could just as well have been best buds, were set up to kill one another. What a horrible tragedy.

Hello ! I am the little boy at 17:44 with my sister. My grandparents and Mr. Johnson corresponded by E.Mail after this day. We had just met him. I have the picture taken at that moment. :)

Crying my eyes out. My grandpa was in WW2..I remember him every now and then talking about the war and Normandy. He met my grandma during the war when he was in England and he brought her to Canada (she was a war bride- grandma's story in itself is an amazing one.). One thing I remember was grandpa not liking or ever wanting pork, because of his time during the war. My grandpa loved me so much, but I never really got to ask him any questions about the war, as I was still a kid pretty much, and we were always told by my parents not to ask questions about the war, as it brought up some bad memories for grandpa. So I never got to hear his stories, other than what he would offer up. He passed away in 1994. One thing I badly want to say to the grandkids out there, if your grandparents/ great grandparents are still alive, don't be afraid to ask them about their lives. I even knew my great grandpa as he lived. with my grandparents. I so wish I had of asked my grandparents about their life. Huge regret that I never did.

I'm am proud to be able to state, that I honorably served aboard the USS Normandy (CG-60), for nearly 2 years. Seeing/hearing/reading all of the stories of the BRAVE MEN from BOTH SIDES,...really puts "things" into perspective! God bless them all!!
It is nice to see former enemy's join up and make peace with each other . And on the German side they were just doing their job like the Americans I hope we will always be allies with Germany.
My Grandfather and a German soldier fought on opposite sides in Holland; I ended up dating the daughter and brought her and her folks to a famioly BBQ...My Grampa and Herr Sonntag became friends and ended up going on vacations together...They're both gone now.

Everyone of these guys and their experiences could be made into a movie. When I hear them tell their stories, a video starts rolling in my head !
My Uncle, Leroy Vann, was a landing craft driver at Normandy. He used to talk, when we could get him to talk, about how the Germans were waiting for the ramps to drop and then they'd just mow the soldiers down like they were mowing wheat. Uncle Leroy died in 2012 and I still miss him.

One of the two survivors of Wiederstandsnest 62 was Heinrich Severloh, "The Beast of Omaha". Who was no beast at all, just a soldier doing his job with an MG42.
I have just paused the video at 6:06 to say that so far I have had a smile on my face the entire way. Lewis seems so youthful, he doesn't seem like your normal elderly man. I can still see the young man in him by the way he talks and moves and laughs and smiles.

This is such a remarkable story. We are all thankful and have the utmost respect for Lewis Johnson and all the American soldiers who fought and the ones who lost their lives in Normandy. The german soldiers were also serving their country in a way, maybe they didn't want to be there but it was simply their duty. It wasn't easy for both sides. Thank you for video. The Boys of Pointe du Hoc will never be forgotten, they are true heroes.

Wow !! They are the living proof that we are all the same after all no matter our origins : we all bleed red !!! What a lesson for us who were so fortunate to never experience war like me in Canada . Makes me realize how much I take peace and freedom for granted . Seeing them reconcile their past is immensely powerful and so inspiring . Every youth should see that film for them to realize the cost of their freedom so they can appreciate life to the maximum and perpetuate that for their entire life .
Thank you so much Franz and Lewis for sharing those terrible historical moments of your lifes so we can learn from that . And thanks to you too Larry for this project .

Bill Blinky After sitting and watching I have a raft of emotions going on. On one hand I can see the American veteran is excited to see the place of the battle once again. Then on the other hand, as he tries to explain 'what he experienced' on that day, he became quite upset.
I was very touched by the French people expressing their appreciation to him for his sacrifices and of course that of the many who were killed. It was wonderful too that young people showed an interest in this lovely US veteran who had been part of the battle and return 50 years later. So many feeling rushing about.
Bill, this is late, but I wanted to thank you for watching my film and your heartfelt words. It was a trip of a lifetime. I just returned from visiting Mr. Johnson. He is 93 now and living in Colorado. We both sat quiet and alone in his home and watching this film again together.

such heroic men. what's left of the ww2 vets thank me for my service as an infantryman in Iraq and Afghanistan. No way what these men did and endured far surpass us today. These are the men that inspired me to join. These are people we should look up to, not Bruce Jenner etc.

First off God Bless all the people that fought in WW2(both sides). Also God Bless the ones that are still with us. I have a pretty crazy family story/scenario. I have a Grandfather on my Mom's side that landed and fought during Operation Overlord for the United States. I also have a Grandfather that fought for the German Wehrmacht during WW2. I would Love to put a Book together of their services of War. Both have passed on now but I have Memories forever.
Fantastic documentary. I like how you incorporated random people that came along into the documentary, very organic. Even the German ex-soldier not being subtitled and speak his own language for the documentary was interesting.
This guy seems fantastic, vibrant, and is truly a hero.

Ah, Jamie thank you kindly!!! This was one of my most favorite films to produce. Lewis Johnson is still alive.
It must've been horrible times for these men, obviously. Them revisiting this scene of horror, which reminded them of this day of death when their buddies where killed. The german dude was 18 years old, just imagine this, he was like a child in that time and he even stated it like that. When I think of the series Band of Brothers, when they said if we would have met under different circumstances we probably could have been friends. And this is so true, because if this fucking war would have never happened they would have been friends. Bless these men and thank them for their sacrifices...

I can't imagine how hard it is to go back there. I was working in the WTC on 9/11, I could never go back, can't look at the Manhattan Skyline anymore. The "Freedom Tower" only reminds me of what we lost, and never gave me any solace that we rebuilt the area.

Men and women looked so much better backed then.
"More ships than German soldiers" it was no picnic for either side. My grandfather was USN he didn't talk about the war much either. I cant' imagine going through this at 18 yrs old. Rip to all who paid the ultimate price for their country.

I’m a Vietnam Combat Veteran & I sure do know what it was like on that day, June 6th & the feeling that that man felt during that whole day was just as bad as it was n 1944 & the thoughts that he had in his head was more than words can describe & I can only imagine what they were & I guess I could just leave it at that & folks it’s a terrible feeling & what more can I say except, “there it is !”

1940s teenagers went into those beaches facing almost certain death, in 2018 teenagers have their faces in their phones and want everything handed to them.
"You know, this D-day thing has a very special meaning for me. And I'm not referring merely to the anxieties of the day. The anxieties that were a natural part of sending in an invasion where you knew that many hundreds of boys were going to give their lives or be maimed forever."
"But, my mind goes back so often to this fact;
On D-day my own son graduated from West Point, and after his training and with his division he came over with his division, but that was some time after."
"But, on the very day he was graduating these men came here, British, Americans, and our other Allies to storm these beaches for one purpose only;"
"Not to gain anything for ourselves, not to fulfill any ambitions that America had for conquest, but just to preserve Freedom. Systems of self-governance in the World."

Did you and Franz Gockel discuss Heinrich Severloh? Mr. Gockel was at WN62 with Severloh and as I'm sure you know, Severloh claims to have killed as many as 1000 soldiers on D Day. I'm curious as to what Mr. Gockel may have seen (if anything) with regards to this? I've just watched part 2 of your story and it was very good. Thank you and all who participated in this production.
Kevin, I interviewed Franz Gockel with the help of a German translator in 2004 on Omaha Beach. If you would be interested in the entire 90 minute interview let me know. It is in my archives. There would be a fee to retrieve it, process it, render and upload it for you.

I love studying any information about this period of history.
My Mother and her Sister lived in the outer suburbs of London and for some reason they weren’t evacuated.
I remember listening to some of the things my Mum told me about what they saw.
My Father was in the North Atlantic convoys in the Merchant Navy and never spoke about it and his Brother was in the RN and his ship was torpedoed off of Ireland with all lose of life.His war lasted six weeks.
My other Uncle was a Tanky and came ashore on D Day and they got shot up not long afterwards.
This is all I know about his war.

A machine gunner firing down on Omaha , it had to be a navy dude to meet him, cuz a ranger or soldier would of stuck a stiletto right in the temple of that dude , he took to much life on that beach to keep breathing.

The Mulberry was a artificial harbour built by the British without it D day would have failed it allowed all heavy tanks to hit the beach

In the 12 weeks, 6 June 1944 - 31 August 1944, the Germans lost almost 300,000 killed, wounded, missing or captured. This is the period in which Gen. Montgomery was overall Ground-Forces Commander. The German losses in men and material was greater than the huge losses in their defeat in Tunisia. The Germans casualties at Stalingrad were much greater, but that was a 6-month battle. Proportionately, the Normandy losses were just as great.
La Cambe ( the german cemetery) is not as well kept and nice as the Omaha American cemetery, I felt sad when I was there...

its odd that the German is wearing a green jacket like the Americans and the American is wearing black like the germans. Maybe some poetic full circle.
I guess the people on the Denver Airport shuttle didnt comprehend what he said when he told them he landed on Omaha Beach on D Day. Or, maybe they just dont know? I'd have been first to shake his hand and have my picture taken with him.
It was like yesterday we made this trip Kevin. It was one of the highlights of my life and work. Mr. Johnson was my adopted Father and we laid him to rest last July at Fort Logan National Cemetery in Denver. I have a video of the service on my Voices of History Channel if you are interested. I miss him dearly and all the places we went together.We loved going into schools and teaching our students the price for freedom. Very emotional presentations. Many of them are also on my channel.

We will start our D Day tour at Pegasus Bridge and work our way Westward. We have 4 1/2 days there before we spend the rest of our time in Paris. Do you have any tips or suggestions for our stay? I haven't watched part 2 yet, but I will. Such an honor for you to have been able to do this for this great veteran. He seems like he was such a nice man. I wish I could have met him.
Kevin Franz Gockel passed away shortly after my interview with him. He and Mr. Johnson are two of my heroes from WWII.
My suggestion for your trip are take lots of photos and video. Omaha Beach is holy ground. The American Cemetery in Coleville is amazing!! I pray for safety for you and your son. God bless you!!
