  • "June 6, 1944, the light of dawn" tells the story of Operation Overlord, which is to date the largest military operation that man has ever conceived. From the summer of 1941 until June 6, 1944. The landing is told like a historical drama with its intrigues, its twists and its thousands of young men who will die there. Entirely produced with cropped and colorized archives, this film by Jean-Christophe Rosé was broadcast on France Télévisions as part of the 70th anniversary of the D-Day landings in June 2014. It is one of the best audiences for a history documentary.

I dont know why I was led to watch this. I have seen many documentaries on D-Day. But this one is absolutely the most accurate and best narrative I have ever seen. Im 74 now. But when I ran across it and started to watch it. I couldn't stop. Even as I make this comment,
my eyes fill with tears 😢.
My dad was in the US Army 29th division that landed on Omaha Beach that day, and I SAW HIM. At 1:01:54, he is the soldier sitting next to the cliff with others looking directly at the camera. My God!! He was probably 20-21. I know it is him because I have a couple of pictures of him just before joining the service. And one pic of him after they made it into Normady.
He was one of the few lucky ones that made the landing, and God had a plan for. (ME!)
My dad never talked very much about that day or the war. All he would say to me is, "Son, no man should ever have to endure and see what we had to face and saw. It was pure hell!" I know he had a Silver Star and several ribbons my sister has, and he was a Sargent Major when he was discharged. I have his strips.
So I never pushed him to talk about it. I lost my dad in 1979 from a massive heart attack.
I had the opportunity 5 years ago to go to Normady and visit Omaha Beach and the Normady Memorial American Cemetery. That day was a beautiful, quiet day, and I stood in the cemetery, I just lost it! Not only because God kept my dad safe but all the men who sacrificed their lives on that bloody day. Maybe it was just me, but it was one of the most chilling and saddest days of my life! Now I know why I was led to watch this documentary. I'm going to call my sister and tell her to watch it!
Dad, I'll always love you for your service and giving us life ❤😢❤.

It makes the people who wrote this sound either bitter and resentful of the help or like they're just trying to propagate resentment towards America and/or are just ignorant. @@SergeyPupkin09 товарищ - I think you will find that those that know their history are well aware of the Siege of Leningrad, the Battle of Moscow and Stalingrad.
The Sword of Stalingrad (Меч Сталингра́да) is a bejewelled ceremonial longsword specially forged and inscribed by command of King George VI of the United Kingdom as a token of homage from the British people to the Soviet defenders of the city during the Battle of Stalingrad. On 29 November 1943, it was presented to Marshal Joseph Stalin by British Prime Minister Winston Churchill at a ceremony during the Tehran Conference, in the presence of President Franklin D. Roosevelt and an honour guard. Sadly the younger generations in both the West and Russia do not have much knowledge of this war.
It is also sad that we do not share war stories as we were allies against Germany. Now it seems that unless a country had the huge numbers of deaths that Russia did then their efforts in fighting Germany and Japan are considered nothing. Is that the way to treat those that did all they could to help you? When Germany changed it's attention away from invading Great Britain and attacked Russia we could have let A.H. get on with it, but we didn't and offered to help you. When Germany initially invaded Western Europe and attacked the UK and the UK elsewhere there was no help from Russia. Roosevelt was naïve in thinking Stalin would join the West in restoring a free Europe after ww2. Stalin had no intention of allowing the countries it had liberated being free and he had no intention of allowing Russians to honour their heroes. The great Field Marshall Zhukov was ousted and the heroes of Leningrad were purged. Russia did acknowledge the Royal Navy for the Arctic Convoys and did acknowledge the RAF for it's bombing of Germany, something that many British won't do. It was a terrible war but one that had to be fought. To combat D-Day the Germans moved the 2nd SS Panzer Division (Das Reich) from the Russian front, along with other soldiers and equipment. In addition the RAF and USAAF massive bombardment of Germany severely disrupted Germany's war effort. How about you acknowledge the importance and heroism of D-Day and we can carry on acknowledging and remembering the importance and heroism of the Russians?

Both of my grandfathers fought the Germans in WWII. I know that they took part in the fighting in France, though one of them told me he arrived after the storming of Omaha was over. He said he was glad he missed that one. Nonetheless he saw his fair share of horrors over there and fought in the battles depicted involving Patton's army. He helped liberate a concentration camp as well. After the war was over he came back and worked two jobs to support a family. My other grandfather had succumb to ptsd and alcoholism and spent the rest of his life homeless shortly after having children. I never got to hear his story. I am very grateful to both them for the sacrifices they made. They don't call them the greatest generation for nothing.

I just visited Omaha beach and the cemetery there. It was impressive to see all the crosses with the names. And its surreal to realise all the horror that have happened there while it is a beautiful natural area. It made me sad and thankfull at the same time that these often young men gave their lives so far away from their own homes. Diying on soil which was not their own, but for the freedom of Europe. We must not forget what all happened so we prevent this to happen again. Love from The Netherlands ❤

To blurr or censor anything in incredible footage such as this one, to me, betrays part of the lessons of war footage like this gives us. I believe people should see how truly horrible it can be without filters.
On the other hand... these are real people with real faces, real families, descendants, and that impact can be very different on them...
Either way, thanks for making this available to us!

It’s really amazing to see the amount of ships and planes and people that went over to save the world essentially. Greatest generation is an understatement. They sacrificed so much to give us what we have today. I’m only sorry so many don’t appreciate and take advantage of what they gave us. RIP too all the great HEROS that saved the world ! My grandfather is one of them.

I know it is painful to witness so many young men who sacrificed so very much. And your so right about them being the "Greatest generation" being an understatement. They don't make them like these true heroes anymore, in which I know these brave men would humbly deny they were hero's. And many , many thanks and respect to your Grandfather for his service @PaNDaSNiP3R. 😢💔🏅

In my younger years I was a huge absorber of WWII history. I’d pour over every book I could in the libraries, and truly found that time fascinating, and still do.
As I grew up and fell into other things, I didn’t spend as much time enveloping myself in the stories of yesteryear, at least as deep as I had before.
This video popped up in my feed, and I’m overcome with such a feeling, like a longing I wasn’t aware of experiencing, washing away for having stumbled into this.
    In short - thanks, sincerely.
