Yeah. The problem is that nosy neighbors don't have any history or evidence of being of any use. It's children escaping and saving their siblings that has a history. Nosy neighbors are about as useless as corrupt cops.
@@zachallen6350 to be fair the cop may have been too shocked by what he was hearing especially coming from a child. Or he was weighing his options to what he could do at that moment because I don't think he could have just barged in that house to save the children by himself. What if the father was armed and dangerous? What if the girl was lying just to get her parents into trouble? He had to think carefully about his next move or the situation could have turned way uglier than it was.
The scariest part is that she isn't crying when speaking to the officer, because she didn't know how bad her situation was. She had no idea what normalcy was.
Not crying from a traumatic event is very normal. I’ve met a lot of people who have told me about how they were beaten and raped in their childhood and none of them cried. People who experienced trauma are emotionally numb, I hope this clears this up because trauma isn’t anything like how movies and tv shows make it out to be. That’s not to say they’ve never cried about it but they’re numb when they have to retell their trauma, especially if it happened a long time ago
@@Gogoogooooogo I wouldn't really say they are 'numb' to their trauma especially if they got sexually assaulted that stuff sticks with you. . . I most certainly believe she didn't know how bad her situation was seeing as how her siblings were chained up and she tried to reason with them stating "IT was because of food" like they were the ones in the wrong
Honestly amazing to leave and call people you had no prior experience with in surroundings you're not familiar with. Takes some serious guts to pull off
Perhaps but given the situation I'm also noticing some serious hyper intelligence. She'd been out for merely minutes and was fully prepared to care for herself with zero actual practice. She just went out there and did the damn thing. Edit: I've looked into this whole thing. Turns out she was a very bright kid. She's a relatively successful fashion model now and I do believe she designs some of her clothing as well.
The mother looks very well fed. Anytime you hear children being accused of stealing food from inside their home, there is a huge problem with the parents.
It's that classic boomer narcissistic behavior. Stuff like "I suffered as a kid so now you suffer because I want you to suffer". This whole macho attitude and ignorance of mental health is honestly a huge problem among boomers. Whatever happened to leaving the world better for your children? Why would anyone want their kids to suffer the way they had too?
@@SamIAm-kz4hg her mental age is far behind what it should be, isolating children from their peers is one of the worse abuses a person can inflict on a child: no friends, limited language development
@@jayhopkins1337 The problem is not “mentally ill people need to stop having kids,” because that thinking leads to eugenics. These parents are abusive. While there isn’t a way to prevent this necessarily, stronger support networks and education for children to know what abuse is would help.
The cops that entered the home, Yes. The cop that picked Jordan up first.. just atrocious. From chomping on his gum like a cow the whole time or just his nonchalant robotic handling of the whole conversation with Jordan. Terrible.
The mishandling of this case is wild from the start. The first time I heard the 911 call I thought the operator would hang up on her. She seemed annoyed the entire time, but I’m glad the girl kept talking.
If you watch the 20/20 episode it actually shows the operator and the cop who was first on the scene. They both seem like really good people. They reunite the cop and Jordan and it’s a very sweet moment.

@@bensmith3890 I would also guess that the parents used the word amnesia when trying to deceive the kids. Just a guess, but I could see that happening.
I've seeing so many crime documentaries but nothing like this. Literally my heart ached. A 29 year old girl weighed only 82 lbs but the mom and dad seems pretty well fed. They put food and toys for kids to look at only! How sick is that? I am totally speechless. I hope they just get to look at food in jail and not eat. These evil people needs to rot in jail. There is no excuse for what they did. Obviously some of the children had the Stockholm Syndrome. Otherwise why would defend those monsters? I hope these angels can move on and live a happy and healthy life.
Jordan was probably so overwhelmed, wanting to say so many things at once, and I can’t even imagine how hard it was for her to try and explain everything.
“are you hurt?” “oh, no, not right now” that is terrifying to hear. i’m so glad her and the rest of her family (except the parents) are (hopefully) doing well.
Unfortunately we don't know much about the rest of the sister, but after this whole situation came to light, the siblings have been separated and some of them went to foster parents, who abused them sexually and physically(Olguin family) . Let them relive their trauma by forcing them to talk about the horrors they have been through.
@@lao-ce8982as a father my blood is boiling watching this. Hearing that these kids were further tormented by others damn sure didn't help. My kids would probably say I'm a tough dad because I don't flex on rules and they don't get social media accounts but they spend tons of time with friends and family. My kids are somewhat sheltered because evil like this is all too common. These kids weren't sheltered for their protection, they were imprisoned to save their twisted ass parents from prosecution. That father deserves a date with a wood chipper and is no kind of man.
Jordan's bravery is extremely astonishing. She had no clue what would happen when she left that house. She took a chance and gave her younger siblings some hope of a normal life.
I’m actually surprised by how intelligent she seems. She barely had social interactions with “normal” people in her live, was malnourished and uneducated. But she still managed to have a decent conversation and explain her problem(s) to the police officer. It makes me sad to think of what she could’ve become if she had grown up in a normal and healthy family with a way to get education.
The way she was talking to the sheriff, with pausing and saying "okay" after every sentence to give more depth to her words because she doesn't know whether the man will actually believe it or not. She knows its her last chance and still trying her level best to explain everything she can. Damn such a brave girl❤
Honestly, she's a genius in my eyes for being able to map an escape and figure out how to get it touch with law enforcement despite having 0 contact with the outside world or no education or anything. Not to mention the courage she has to be able to pull it off.
The absolute worst part of this whole situation is even after Jordan was saved and put into foster care she continued to be abused by at least two different foster families. I pray Jordan gets real help and she finds peace.
I often hear that foster homes are abusive. I wonder if it attracts the wrong crowd to put themselves up to be a foster home so they can live out their degenerate fantasies on fragile children? The screening process must be revised.
Jesus, this is heartbreaking. But Christ the first responding officer sounds like he’s mixing Mac n Cheese while he’s talking to her the way he’s going to town on that gum.
when she said “Im sorry if I talk too much” while trying to explain her situation, that her and her siblings were never fed and were chained up, really speaks volumes. The fact that she felt like she needed to apologize when seeking help is so sad.
The fact she has no idea what medication or injuries are at 17 is honestly sad, and she’s not really panicking that much when talking to the police, that just shows that she doesn’t really know how bad this is.
She did say that she didn't even finish first grade. I suppose they didn't have much access to TV, computer games, books etc., so she wasn't even able to pick these words up from there. She missed out on so much education it's terrifying.
@@AiRPasternak I think that's when the officer became sure that he was handling a legitimate high-profile case. The girls behavior was being consistent with her claims in a way even she couldn't know.

I worked in an Emergency Department as a nurse. We would occasionally have children come in that were physically, or emotionally abused (or both), but never have I seen anything this bad or this long a term. I feel so badly for the children and their futures. As for the parents, they will never understand the pain they put their children through. I’m not sure that 25 to life is long enough… but it’s a start.
If im not wrong she got a phone and some kinda of acess to internet, she meet a kid that told her and the kid told her How bad her situation was and she should call the police. I remember a vídeo talking about this but i do not remember the veracity or the Channel
This is why it’s great to know the people who live around you and always keep tabs on the people around you. You never know what goes on behind closed doors at people’s places
A year later, David and Louise Turpin were sentenced to life in prison. One of their sons, Joshua, who is now around 30, told a judge at their sentencing that he still suffered from nightmares of his sisters and brothers being chained up. And their children were physically mentally and sexually abused in foster care.
Yep, directly from Wikipedia: In October 2019, five of the younger children were adopted by an abusive family who further tormented them. Allegations included "hitting them in the face with sandals, pulling their hair, hitting them with a belt, and striking their heads". They were forced to eat excessively and then forced to eat "their own vomit", and the foster father was accused of "grabbing and fondling" them and "kissing them on the mouth".[41] The foster family was arrested and charged with abusing multiple children in their care.
Considering she's had nearly no education, she actually did pretty damn well on that phone call. I'm so glad she got the courage to escape and I hope she gets the happy life she deserves after all this is settled.
"Why didn't you leave sooner?" Is such a loaded question. As a victim you immediately feel guilt, like your situation is your own fault and you deserve what happened. You freeze up when answering as your mind starts to over think and you start to blame yourself for your problems, even if you had little to no control over them.
From what my Dad told me, how they learned to talk was listening to Justin Bieber’s music; after Justin found that out, he met with them. I thought that was a class act. *Bless those children*; I sincerely hope they ALL lead wonderful lives.🥰♥️

Not only is she a hero, she is rich as FUCK now, after the whole turpin case she blew up on social media, went on interviews and is now doing modelling (or something like that). Her estimated net worth is 300k+ which is hella good for a 21 year old. Glad to see she's thriving and doing amazingly right now.
@@Eric0225 I'm happy for her, but having a net worth of 300k is far from rich. It doesn't mean she has 300k in the bank. It just means she owns a really inexpensive home probably. And "owning" it doesn't even mean it's paid off, you could still owe almost all of it, with interest. Most people with a 300k net worth are struggling financially.
@@HaltDieKlappa You obviously don't know what you're talking about. Your net worth is your total assets with debts subtracted from it. i can't imagine how evil you'd have to be to know what the turpin kids went through and still abuse them sexually, emotionally and physically while fostering them. there's a special place in hell for those foster parents as much as the biological ones!
Even worst is knowing that the social workers did nothing to help and ignored all of it. Shows how goddamn terrible the foster care system is, since the foster family had abuse allegations against them prior to this.

She's very well-spoken for someone who never got a formal education or spoken to someone outside her house. She was very brave, and I hope all is going well for her today.
Children can learn very fast if they really want to. I started reading when I was 2 years old because I wanted to understand comic books, turned out it was in a completely different language than what I spoke but I learned it all the same. I understood 4 languages before even going to school and am up to 7 languages now. There are also an additional 4-5 languages that i understand well enough that I could probably get by with using them if I really had to. Formal education unfortunately often kills the joy of learning unless you're extremely motivated.
The way she spoke reminded me of how children in preschool or allaround the age of 3-6 tell stories. Often jumping between different "plots" revisiting them seemingly at random when they remember/invent a new detail. Thats normal for a child that age but not an 17 year old
What a nightmare. She has an extremely limited education and almost no understanding of the world, but she was smart enough to know that the kind of place she was living was not good and even knew to dial 911. She's legitimately a hero
you said pretty much what i was thinking... what a friggin mess.... sigh... religion has a lot to answer for sadly..... to allow this to happen is more proof there is no god... as any loving god woudl not have allowed this... what a friggin mess... and the long term for the children is not great... not good at all....
When she was trying to describe cuts, bruising and welts on their wrists she said ''That made in there''.I was astonished. She had so much courage to do this and get her younger sisters out of those chains.
I'm a foster parent and I take really good care of my children so hopefully they get a good foster parent although I will acknowledge that there are some bad ones out there too. If States invested more in the foster care system more parents would feel like there was support enough to enter foster care and that's how you entice great parents. Trust me when I tell you it will always be a financial net loss but having the support of being able to offer up all the resources needed to help kids that are this traumatized is so important and without it parents are scared to open their homes.
Jordan is the definition of BRAVE!!!! I can't even imagine where all these kids would be or how much longer if at all they would be rescued. It's frightening to think of other children that may be in the same situation. 😢
The fact that 20/20 had to investigate just to get the kids their money, and that the others were placed in unsuitable homes, shows just how unsafe and cruel this whole world is.
Exactly! You'd think someone with a heart would make sure all the children, the adults and the younger ones got the care and education they needed. I can't believe someone had the audacity to try steal from them, considering all hey went through.
The officer is asking 'why don't you know much' AFTER hearing EVERYTHING she just said - what the hell! It seems like such a lack of concern and nonchalantness😦
I felt the same way with a few of these questions but they are for their eventual treatment/support and for safety. For example he asks repeatedly why they “didn’t just leave” but it’s a way to make sure the doors aren’t trapped, nothing in the yard, guard dogs, etc.
It seems like an obvious question, but I think he was just trying to get more information about the situation. He probably was figuring out himself "why she didn't know much," but any more information she can provide him with will be valuable in a court case. You know?
Nope. It was clearly an investigative question, it's just that you didn't get that ;-) Cops handled this exceptionally well, helped the victims, made sure they were safe, deescalated the situation as much as possible but stepped into action as soon as they had enough legally to be decisive. Made sure there were no guns involved, didn't take the mofo's word for it and searched him and how they handled the parents psychologically was great. Their task is not to condemn or be aggressive or emotional, it's to investigate and act decisively without endangering anyone. If we had more cops like these, a whole lot of suffering could be prevented

I was disgusted to find out last year that some of the kids were in awful foster homes. After all they've been through, you'd think the system would find foster parents who didn't do that.
Most of the foster parents and group homes staff are in it for the money and will definitely treat the children like shit to blow off steam or just for the hell of it. Then the kids labeled as bad because they will act out with no real support system or anything and then they are discredited due to their behavior so nobody would hear them if they were abused. I’ve witnessed it first hand
As a, what I would consider "caring" foster parent, it's horrible to see the abuse of children at both the hands of the government and bad foster parents. Just this year, a foster child was forcibly removed from our home for attacking one of our children, and since nobody wanted her, she was put into the psych ward of the hospital for a month. The psych ward was just a monitored hospital room, with a hospital bed. During that time, she didn't see daylight, nor leave her room. She just got to sit there, and watch TV and eat. School was put on hold. The system didn't care about her, and didn't visit, just a box checked in their mind. My wife and I at least visited her once a day and keep her spirits high.
Huge respect to the officers for staying calm and not escalating a conflict. They're friendly, they act as if they might get the wrong house or a false call, they act like professionals. Attempts of domination often lead to gunfire and unnecessary victims.
What most people dont realize is there are times you cant de escalate a situation. When they are a dedicated threat nothing you can say or do will stop them usually the cops get blamed for that like de escalating is giaranteed to work.
Well I would be interested to hear the details. What did they want to use the money for? I think the money should have been used, but for good purposes. To simply split the money up and hand it out would not have made any sense. But not using the funds for necessary things like education and housing and therapy wouldn't either. It should have been made to last as long as possible, but not at the expense of the children's needs altogether.
There's the whole story about this case, the after being rescued first to the Foster carers which were prosecuted to... Truly shows the checks on Foster carers don't have a high bar at all...ITS VERY sad...

Jordan is a person basically without any formal education, and without any normal socialization, closed in a small prison and raised by monstrous parents, yet she is deeply intelligent person with a great heart. This is genuinely powerful counterargument against cynical, pessimist view of the human nature, the assumptions that without formal schooling and good upbringing people are 'naturally' stupid and evil.
I don’t know a single person who would assume something like that but okay lmao. Formal schooling is still important. May not be necessary for everyone and every situation, but the reason why these kids didn’t have one is pretty horrible
@@bolson42 I have known people who claim both ways regarding school and social education: some who claim that cruelty, selfishness, and agression are inherent to the human nature, and are only repressed through social education (i.e. selflessness and gentleness are acquired rather than inherent traits), and others who clain the opposite, that humans are naturally "good", and learn to be cruel and selfish through observation of similar traits amongst their peers who are already socialized.
At the end of the day, we're all still animals with instincts. Dire situations give way to ingenuity and sheer will to ensure survival. Sure, knowing things can help your odds some, but not totally necessary. Very cool example of the human spirit
She is so intelligent given the fact how neglected she was. She kept calm and tried to explain everything the best she could and immediately asked when she has not understood everything. Honestly a ton of people could learn a little form her.
There are adults who couldn't handle half of what these poor children went through. Despite the neglect, isolation and abuse, she's very astute. I wish all of these children the best in life. They absolutely deserve it.
I was thinking the same thing. For someone who has had almost literally no social interaction her ability to express herself is impressive. I am much more sad about her constant apologizing, as it's likely a trauma response learned over many years of abuse and something she needed to learn to remain "safe" as one could be there...
@@sfurules I noticed the over apologizing as well. It’s heartbreaking the cruelty this incredibly brave young lady endured. The entire time I heard her talk I just wanted to hug her. So utterly sad. I am so glad she’s doing well now. She deserves all the happiness in the world.

The state of California has failed these children horrifically. After their "rescue" all of the minor children were placed in a horrifically abusive foster home where they were beaten and molested. The adult children were denied the money from their Gofundme by the state courts, and now several of them are homeless. It's disgusting. I encourage people to look into the ongoing lawsuit the children have filed against the state of California's social services and to show support where possible. Every single Turpin child was failed in every way possible.
It wasnt the state courts that denied them the money, it was their caseworker. Strangely enough though she got a nee range rover and quit her job to start a real estate business. Fucked up all around
As someone who lives in California,it’s true I have not experienced homelessness but taxes are very VERY high, and I’ve seen poor homeless people, and dogs I just feel bad but the problem is you don’t know which one is a druggie or which one is actually trying to get money so they can live in a house and stop being homeless,in my neighborhood there are yearly shootings,I know that’s not that bad but I’m scared of dying, and if your house is in an alley you hear shootings every night and dogs barking, and there’s people on the road that I’m surprised even have a driver’s license,I’m saying there’s people that suck at driving and you should watch out for those people,I feel so bad for those children,I wish they had better parents..
This girl is so clever considering the fact that she did not get to see the outside world for 95% of her life. The way she kept her calm, and provided info though she was scared out of her mind and couldn't form her sentences properly is amazing. She is extremely brave, intelligent, and composed. She's remarkable.
I was wondering what they do in meantime, if they dont go to school. Like what was their parents plan to rise their children to become as adults and dont everybody have reason for the way they raise their children, so why cant they explain, when I bet that its not gods plan to raise up children like that. God never said to you to malnutirate your children like that. It looked the parents wanted to tease their children with buying toys they cant use or food they cant eat, while the parents eat it themselves. Whats the point to even buy toys you dont let your kids not use, because toys are not really that special. I wonder what would happen, if one kid picks up knife, because you tease him by not letting him eat any food at all. The letter in the end where she said she loves her children sounds so fake, if your 29 year old daughter weights in 82 pounds.
I can't believe I decides to watch the whole thing before going to bed. This is sick and all my thoughts are for these poor kids and I hope with every fiber of my being that they'll find peace and wealth soon.
If that’s all they know, it becomes normal to them but they know deep down something is really wrong. I’m sure that one kid was in denial thinking the parents intentions were good. What happened to them was a long nightmare, and the brave girl became a hero and rescued her siblings. I hope they are all doing a lot better. It’s sad that they really struggled in foster homes too…
It's a testament to how smart human beings are. Despite of being deprived of all the outside world they still manage to figure some incredible things out.
This wasn’t just them being mean, this was cruel and sadistic behavior. leaving food out to torment them with, clean new clothes and toys, just sick. They obviously enjoyed being cruel.
Combined with their pseudo Christian religion... demonic. I mean... you know you don't treat any children like this, even moreso your own children. This was not simply error; not "oh, we didn't know that using food and toys as a way to torment our children was wrong... and not teaching them hygiene and having them take baths."
Thats what I was thinking. The psychological torment they went through. They had everything there that they needed and everything they could want. Nice furniture buried under filth. New clothes with tags still on them. Toys still in boxes. They chained them and teased them with what they needed. This has to be 1 of the worst cases I've ever heard of. My heart breaks for those babies.
Definitely. My Grandson 8yrs had everyone of his toys thrown away and sobbed all night. Now he's thrown them away as I rescued him and he's now a few miles away from me in an amazing loving home with pets🙂
The parents pretending to be remorseful in the aftermath is so infuriating, "we never meant to harm you, we were only doing what we thought was right, that's why we hid you from everyone whenever possible and told you to give cover stories when we couldn't." Those bastards are only sorry that they got caught.
I'm wondering if the mother had been genuinely brainwashed by her husband that treating the children like that was okay. She seemed very confused and was more than willing to answer questions and stuff while her husband stood blocking the doorways to things and was rather quiet the whole time. After all, she was only 16 when she married him, and he was 23.... Of course, she could just be equally guilty and put on a great act. But one of the children had mentioned that "dad changed her."
@@kyuuchat Judging by the fact that the daughter never brought up the father once when describing what their parents do to them I'm hesitant to give her a pass.
I thought it was interesting that in her statement to the court Mrs. Turpin said, to her children "Don't worry, Mom and Dad are going to be OK." Making it all about her. Narcissism maybe?
I'm deeply saddened to learn that the county and foster system failed these 13 children after the buzz surrounding the parents' trial and sentencing ended. It took a more recent "20/20" investigation for people to start acting right. What is WRONG with people? These kids escaped monsters only to be treated like shịt, yet again. 🤦🏻♀️
Oh yeah. Twice I had social services let my 8yr old grandson down. The first left him to be neglected at 5 months old the second time was in May of this year when he was with me and escaped abuse only for SS to come to my house to take him back but I'd told him to lock himself in the bathroom. They went back without him. He's now in a loving foster care family a few miles from me and is loved every day. The foster care worker went back to social services to deal with the woman who tried to trick him to going back. Hopefully she lost her job. Wales Britain
The majority of American foster institutions are religious run as well. There are many who believe that sparing the rod spoils the child. The whole thing is disgusting. These organizations funnel children into religious homes to keep their numbers propped up.

She's incredibly eloquent and has far better manners than most people do. I hope those kids will be taken care of.
Well....they were separated and incorporated into the foster system. So we won't really know unfortunately.
@Andrew3455 they didnt get good ones, at all

The system is rifled with opportunistic ppl like that. Lots pf scummy ppl only doing fostering for the money and treating the children horribly.
The system doesn’t care about kids
Yep. That disgusting Hispanic man sexually assaulted some of the underage girls.
In this instance it's better that they don't mind being there

Well I would be interested to hear the details. What did they want to use the money for? I think the money should have been used, but for good purposes. To simply split the money up and hand it out would not have made any sense. But not using the funds for necessary things like education and housing and therapy wouldn't either. It should have been made to last as long as possible, but not at the expense of the children's needs altogether.

It’s called an outlier. Some people can think outside of the box. Most can’t. This one case doesn’t prove that upbringing doesn’t effect anything.
@@VGDomination Yeah, she was the first one to escape. But still it doesn't mean formal education would necessarily change that.

The state of California has failed these children horrifically. After their "rescue" all of the minor children were placed in a horrifically abusive foster home where they were beaten and molested.
