Not sure how politics factors into anything, but if you want to bring it up... I was in a discord for 2016's election, all of us were Trump supporters. People need to chill and let police officers do their work. As much as the father would love to see him get arrested on the spot, the police officers need to conduct an investigation before that could happen.
In cases like these, investigation is extremely important in order to uncover the whole perspective of the crime.

How you think the officers felt who also have kids trying to keep their shit together to conduct this investigation while also trying to keep the parents calm. All while operating in on the confines of the law to keep things admissable in court later so he doesn't walk. If those parents assault him he becomes a victim and they will lose the golden opportunity to interrogate him which would likely mean he'd have gotten over. Massive kudos to those officers doing that and keeping their own anger in check cuz it's not easy. Even more so after the guy attempted to assault him it is really hard to not want to do more than just place them on the ground. Because if they did and let their anger out on him they would end up in handcuffs later on and potentially lose your job amongst civil rights lawsuits from people who don't understand what's going on. If it's not illegal to misrepresent yourself as a child's guardian, it absolutely should be.
Edit: Because people keep mentioning it. Yes, attempted kidnapping is a crime. However, you have to prove that they were attempting to remove the child from the location. Currently, it would seem that lying about being the child's parent/guardian is not considered enough proof of intent. It's this that I feel needs to change. Either it should be considered evidence of attempted kidnapping, or it should just be straight-up illegal. I understand that in most cases, lies of identity are protected under free speech. However, I think there is good cause to argue that certain, very specific lies are not allowed. For example, you can't lie to a police officer about your identity when they tell you to identify yourself during an investigation. Perhaps we could at least make it illegal to lie to a school/daycare/hospital worker, etc. about your guardianship of a child under their care. They are required to surrender a child to their guardian, so lying about this to one of these specific people should be considered an attempt to gain control of the minor.

Experienced something similar. In 5th grade me, my classmates and two teachers were on our way back to the school building (we walked to the nearby town to visit a library and eat ice cream). We were in some sort of forest section and then a weird older man walked next to us and seemingly hard a weird look on his face and wouldn't leave. We don't know what his intentions were since our teacher stopped him and asked him what he wants, telling him that his behavior is inappropriate and creepy. Don't know how the conversation went on since she told us to follow behind her colleague and that she will catch up to us. She did afterwards but the atmosphere remained significantly uncomfortable. I’m a criminal defense attorney: the reason the cops don’t want to put him in the car is that then his attorney can easily argue that it’s a custodial arrest. They’d have to mirandize him and potentially would stop getting incriminating admissions from him. While he’s sitting out in the open, not handcuffed, that’s less likely.

This is speculative nonsense - cops handcuff people and put them in the back of cars ALL THE TIME when they have multiple people to deal with. This is a handwave at best. And MOST arrests are "custodial arrests" - it literally means FOR THE PURPOSE OF TRANSPORTING THEM TO A DETENTION FACILITY. Also - why didn't they just move him somewhere less visible? The other side of the parking lot and let him sit in the back of the car with the door open and uncuffed. There were plenty of options, these cops were just ignorant, lazy, or both.

He was NEVER leaving that parking lot even if he was a hamless insane guy who actually wanted attention from parents and "families" and the 1 in a millionn chance he was a crazy lonely guy who wanted to see what its like to be a father, the police were just digging to see how far the rabbit hole went before arresting him. At the time the parents almost sabotaged the investigation 999 out of 1000 would have never admitted their intent or crimes. This guy was absolutely somthing else never seen anything like it before. Him admitting freely his intent like that is extremely peculiar. Tying into that, there was also an alt-right hoax about 5-6 years ago where they tried to make 'clovergender' (identifying as a younger age) a thing, as a way to attack the LGBTQ+ community, notably non-binary people.
As a member of the LGBTQ+ community, it's unfortunately a way for pedophiles to piggyback off of hateful propaganda where heterosexual people use the slippery slope argument "oh but if we let gay people get married then we'll end up legalizing marriage to kids and animals"... and then pedophiles will say "hey, we're hated for our sexuality, count us as part of this marginalized group and give us rights".
