that bucket reach is an interesting compromise... it definitely steals from the lift capacity, but for some applications, it's much more important to get the bucket further over the target without running into the truck/trailer side or into ditches/mud.
One more thing to think about when considering how you plan to use your compact tractor if you're looking to buy one!

The Other Tim With Tractors
Another great video. Overall you can't really go wrong with either model. I am a strong orange fan at the moment. But I'll throw out this piece of advice as it is relevant to my purchase. Aside from the machines another key factor is the dealer. Prior to buying my BX23s I had a Deere lawn tractor. Due to a (in my opinion) really bad experience I vowed never to give the JD dealer another dime of my money(I'd elaborate if anyone was interested). Unfortunately in my area they are a very large dealer with locations all around me, so I would have had to travel quite a bit to find the next closest JD dealer. At the same time, the second closest Kubota dealer to me is Messicks. And honestly I learned so much from all of their videos they earned my business.
Since you will have one of these machines for generally a very long time, having a dealer you trust is important, regardless of the color machine you buy.
Good update Tim, When I bought my new 855 back in 1992 I checked out the thickness of the steel companies used to build their tractors and decided the JD was the most strongly built between them all... a few inches benifit here and there doesn't really concern me, lifting capability, plowing through snow, tires, and the weight of the tractor does, the heavier the tractor the better traction, that's why I like Massey Ferguson, they build heavy tractors. I use a 6' grooming mower and a 5 ' bush hog for mowing, so middle deck mounting system are not a concern for me.
After all these years my 855 is still running like a new one with no oil leaks and no calls or trips to the dealership, and I've only had to replace two ignition switches, one electric PTO switch, a tachometer cable and one hydraulic line which was my fault for it breaking because I stack large branches on top and behind the bucket going to the trash fire.
The 855 is always hosed off after being used, it's lubed regularly, gets oil changes at the end of each mowing season, and every 300 hrs I change the hydraulic oil and filter... it's brake pedal and forward and reverse pedal return springs, seat adjustment springs are given a coat of CorrosionX before and after each mowing season also.
I've put an oil additive called MotorKote in it for over 10 years? it's in all my property maintenance engines, mower gearboxes an in my vehicles crankcases an air compressor. I think it's doing what it's advertised to do, my zero turn 1993 Snapper's 20 HP Kolher engine is still going strong and sounds like a turbine with Motorkoke in it.
I won't knock another product, but I'm John Deere green all the way to my grave.

I purchased my new (in 2017) BX23S in 2017, I purchased this machine because the parts are all Kubota, engine, transmission, PTO, everything. The warranty is good, and if you have the dollars to put a down (large) payment lessens the pain of financing for 0% then I think it's a good deal. I have used my machine around our acreage and am very happy with the unit, so far. I do have some "don't like issues" but they are not a break deal kind of thing. All really comes down to checking your machine, cleaning after a day of work, and inspections. I did my research on others, Mahindra, John Deere, but I decided not to go that route due to the fact that they implement other manufacturers powertrain/ engine components. I want to call a Kubota dealer in 10 years time and be able to get parts, as the last thing I want to be told when looking for parts is they are no longer in business. Having said that I do plan on having my machine for many many years, like my 1962 B-275 diesel.
Try calling Deere and asking for an engine part for the Yanmar engines from 15-20 yrs ago. I think you will be surprised.

@@TractorTimewithTim parts are purely a numbers game. Any company with large machine population has good parts support. Where things get weird is the low volume stuff or supplier sourced items. we gets lots of phone calls on the Deere Equipment that was built by oxbo or Krone because they stop supporting it when the parts are unlikely to sell through. I should do a video on the economics of parts.

Both machines have there good and bad quirks, depends what you like or dislike about them. Having a close dealer is worth the money, which ever way you go, I think. I have A BX25D, and the dealer is only 5mile/8km down the road, the JD Dealer is 45mile/70km down the road. Thanks Tim

Just a suggestion on taking your measurements... Use the level to establish a plumb line as you are at the mast, but try hanging a plumb bob (actual or improvised) off the loader pivot pins or bucket edge to establish that second plumb position in space relative to the loader mast. Not a big deal at all, but it'd make taking the measurements easier and more precise.

Great vid and point about loader detachment. II saw another vid about leaving tractor in neutral while parking loader. It works great for me, tractor just rolls back a few inches,but it may be different w/different tractors..., I have a 2305
One thing not mentioned is the bucket attaching systems. The Kubota quicktach is optional and compatible with all skid steer attachments. But that system adds weight and detracts from the lift capacity over the standard kubota FEL. Not sure if you have a choice on the JD.

My BX23S is about 3 months old now and I bought it new. I have the optional bucket level indicator on my tractor.
I bought the bucket level indicator kit from Messicks and put it on my BX2360. The kit was around $68.00 with tax. I had to do some minor mods to make it fit but it wasn't a big deal to install. I like it a lot, it makes things much easier.
@@hermzinn8740 not bad price for the kit thats the same price cost here too and deeres here in pei wanted $140.00 plus tax wich overpricey for indicator kits wich i could get 2 kits for that at my kubota dealer
@@hermzinn8740 When I was pricing out my tractor I ask my sales rep about that kit and he told me it was around $60.00. When we negotiated the final price I was then able to get him to throw in that kit, installed, along with a couple other things to seal the deal.
Ken needs to look into a quick connect for the 1 series like the BX has for the loader too.

I can see the extra reach helping when loading over a the fender/wheels of a dump box or really any trailer.

Absolutely loving this series... especially since I was 110% betwixt and between with which to purchase of these two ... Just to me the Deere is way ahead (for my applications) ... but hey that's me ... especially when I'll be using a flail mower and not a rotary ...
I have loaded a few dump trailers full of dirt with my bx with the heaviest load around 6T. All from a single side. Level the load once the bucket edge is over the side, curl down/ push in simultaneously to make a little pocket in the material and just keep pushing it to the other side of the trailer. A little practice and the wheels almost never come to a stop. Although bigger would be better, these baby tractors keep surprising me.
A pickup bed is a common thing to dump over. I would add a fence to that. My most common bulk material moving task until very recently when I finally redid the fenceline to include a gate was dumping manure over the fence out of the dry pen.
I don't know how much that would apply to anyone else, but that was my experience with wishing I had more reach.
More height too for dumping over a pickup.

While Kubota shows and lists the loader level indicator for the quicktach FEL, in literature and pictures, good luck finding one. My dealer said they could not order one nor had ever seen one.
Sounds a little shotty... my dealer installs them when they assemble the tractor and the customer must request to remove it if it's an option they don't want.

Front axle to bucket tip would be nice to see how much more leverage weight in the bucket has so you dont bring up the back tires and dump your load into your box faster then you want
I have a home made dolly for the bucket and a smaller also home made dolly for the parking stand and together they both work great. You just have to watch the size of the dolly wheels are not to big or the ones under the parking stand will push it up to high and get caught under the tractor.
You're absolutely correct about the flimsy Kubota stands. Been there and bent one by not curling the bucket enough. Even though the stands won't bend if you do it right I completely agree that they should be much beefier. Welding an iron rod to the back of each stand should help it (unless you do it right every single time :) ). Keep up the good videos and thanks for sharing.

I made darn sure that when i purchased my LA344 loader for my BX2370 that i got the optional bucket level indicator.. When company's put a sticker on the top of the bucket its almost laughable. To be honest my dealer was great.. i asked them that because i was purchasing the loader new would you be able to throw in the bucket level indicator for free and they did! They also installed it for me so it was ready to work when i picked it up. They also installed my block heater for free but i paid for that, and lastly i did the bx2380 floor mat upgrade the same day.
Is this floor mat upgrade a Kubota option? Or is this a 3rd party accessory?

Referring back a bit to the turning radius difference between the two tractors, what is the difference between the two front axles? You can see from the overhead view, the JD wheels are at a much greater angle from the frame.
Are the front axles totally different from each other?
The steering mechanism is totally different. Harder to say about the front axles. Really need someone with more expertise than me to evaluate this. I can’t quite understand why the Deere wheels rotate so much further.

Once you use a loader enough you know where the bucket is at without an indicator on my john deere loader I always end up bending the indicator and removing it after

Just kinda noticed, the JD does not look like its bucket has a replaceable cutting edge on it. The kubota looks like it has the holes in the bucket for it, just not attached currently. Is it an option for JD? Also this will add about 1.5" to 2" in length to the bucket.
Further lift but lot less lift on the orange so .you. need . That yes orange owner and still going 👍
To me the Kubota loader arms are more arched the whole way where as the deere the loader arms are slightly arched along the hood and then squared off and straight. Usually an arch is the strongest form of shape maybe that's why they can get away with thinner steel on the arms. I'm sure part of it is for looks too. My l-series loader is more shaped like the Deere, but it's also a 2011. I have a Kubota my father has a 1023e so means no difference to me they both make great machines.

You know it is not safe to stand under the loader even though there is no weight on it. It could still fall and potentially kill you. I knew someone that, that happened to.
Saw a skid steer bucket fall on a coworker. Luckily it grazed the back of his head and landed flat on the back of his legs with him pinned against the from of the skid steer. Talk about an adrenaline rush running over and lifting the bucket off him . He had a knot on his head and a sore ankle for a few days.
109jacosta I knew someone that was using a hydraulic jack to lift his mower up and it fell on him. He died under a mower you could see where he has struggled all night long. His head was getting crushed from the weight.

One thing I look at is the ability to get under the hood to do maintenance on my tractors and the John Deere 3032E tractor I have is more difficult to get under due to the bucket being in the way. The 790 tractor is better to work on, but it don't have a bucket on it to get in the way and everything is better to get to on that tractor.

Hi Tim! In an earlier episode of this comparison series you mentioned (while tilling) that that if you had to lower the tiller after bumps while tilling with bx. Did I misunderstand what you were saying or does bx's 3-point hitch lack float function?
Well, the 3 point on any tractor is complicated, as there is no downforce.
This one drops while you hold the lever down...there is no position control.
At first while tilling, I would hold the lever down until the tiller was in working position.
Then I realized that I had to hold it down LONGER to allow the tiller to go lower yet when the tiller encountered a dip.
So, hold it down extra long time to allow it to float more.
This is poor explanation. Maybe I can visualize sometime.
@@TractorTimewithTim Thank you for your answer. From experience I must nit pick that there are a few tractors with downforce. Often not needed but helps with few tasks.
I think I worded my question poorly. When I said "float function" I meant "float position". Like for example Fordson Major* (or E1A) has no position or draft control. Instead, it's 3-pth has 4 postions: lift, neutral, down (no force) and float. The difference between down and float positions being that float doesn't return to neutral by itself and I understand that in bx it always returns to neutral.
I wonder if it's a feature of bx model(s) or if there's something missing with your unit.
*I know super major (I believe it's Ford 5000 on the other side of the pond) has draft and/or position control.
There is no float position on the 3 pt. Up, down, and neutral.

Tim, any videos on overall drivetrain layout or specific benefits to having one way over another? Example, forward cooling on the BX vs the JD’s system which blows hot engine air onto the operator.
Haven’t discussed the drive train yet. Not sure about the pros / cons of the forward cooling. Not enough experience.
One of your videos showed you rotary cutting a field with extensive over growth. It caused you to consistently get off the tractor to clean the front grill and radiator screen. The suction created from the radiator fan caused the build up and showered you with hot engine air during that episode. I remember you asking Christy for a cab tractor shortly after, lol.
Yes. I mentioned the forward cooling design in that episode I think.
Several BX owners have commented that it is not as favorable as I thought it might be.
So, I’m not really sure what to say about it other than to point it out.

I agree completely that a parking stand should be strong enough that using the lift instead of the curl doesn't bend it. I have never had an issue with mine (other than the previously mentioned unlevel ground issue) and I use curl and lift both to get it off of there...basically which ever one does it...that's what I use.
I am curious what the justification for only using curl is. I was never told this and have never heard it mentioned.

I’m not sure I want thin steel hood. I’ve dropped loader material on the hood multiple times....no evidence. I’m surprised that folks make decisions on such irrelevant topics.
Yeah for sure , the plastic on the JD is really great, doesn't fade and logs bounce off it. I would have dents , rust and fading if it was metal...

Yep, ever notice how many JD’s you see with the hood off! Guess that’s for extra cooling or quick access when the Yanmar dies. I was wondering why about all rental companies use small Kubota’s in their fleet?
All this measuring. They seem so close. And the pressures on the pumps where also close. I wonder if the large difference in lift is something like a lower high pressure relief in the controls. I have seen this in log splitters. Seem to stall for no reason when all else is similar. Just a thought.
The extra 6" 'forward' is likely the biggest reason for the decreased lift capacity.
Why not spray silicone (Whatever) on the buckets so it would empty completely ?????
Totally agree. It makes a HUGE difference. I use my tractor mostly for winter snow plowing. I'm plowing cold, wet, icy, STICKY snow for up to 7-8 hours per snow storm. I started spraying the bucket at the start of each storm a couple winters ago and its made a huge difference. Last year I tried something else as well and it works even better. I put a coat of silicone on it and then a coat of WD-40 on top of that. I'm able to complete the entire 7+ hours with just the one application at the start. Even at the end, nothing is sticking inside the bucket. I go with the WD-40 on top of the silicon because its more oily. the silicone layer underneath tends to last longer than if I did it vice versa. Great tip that more should know about and try.

Do you compare the bucket "float" function on the Kubota vs the Deere? Does the Deere have the "float" function on the 1 series tractor? I know they do on the larger ones and their backhoes. Also do you have any opinion on the Kubota being able to use any standard Bobcat/skid steer attachment vs Deere having to use their proprietary attachements?

@@TractorTimewithTim That's my question. I know the Kubota has float function on the bucket but I'm not sure if the Johnny does. I know they do on backhoes and 3 series on up, (my brother has as 3 series) and it's pretty important to me so I can plow our long gravel driveway without digging in the plow too much. I still can't decide which one! If the Deere has the float function I think that's the way I'd go. Thanks Tim!

Hey there would the Kubota B2601 not be a better comparison to the 1025R in actual body size, weight, lifting power and over all functionality? I just think that would be a more fair apples to apples comparison
Well, the B2601 is much larger, and more expensive. It would win the capabilities comparison if that is the goal....but it is at least $3000 more than the Deere.
Okay I don’t own either machine but have been researching the pros and cons of each machine as I intend to buy one here shortly and am unsure witch one I’m going to get at this time. So what you are saying is that the 1025R is between the Kubota BX and B models

So the Kubota reaches 6in. further than the Deere but lifts 500 lbs. less
As a bx owner I think kubota needs to redo their loader more like the 1025r it is superior because it can also fit on a 2000 series where the bx cannot fit on a b series hats off to jd on a superior loader. Still like orange but jd makes a really good unit also.
Would not want that. The loader ends up not being optimum on the larger tractor.

i looked at both these tractors. then i tried the yanmar sa324 (same price) why would you go with green or orange when the yanmar is twice the tractor for same price or less? the yanmar would drag both them toys down the road at the same time? am i missing something? thanks for the great videos tim
The sa324 looks more like a comparison to the Deere 2025r as it’s a bit larger than the 1025&bx
@@wickedcoyote271 Exactly this. It's the next size class up. The Yanmar is cheaper than the 2025 and B2650, same size, but also has less capacity. Couple that within 50 miles of where I live, there's 14 Deere dealers, 6 Kubota dealers, and 0 Yanmar dealers, and the choice is easier.

That is also what made me go with the 1025r over the BX23S. Kubota nickel and dime you to death. The bucket level was extra, toolbox was extra, bucket cutting edge was extra and on and on and on. I kept seeing the Kubota was less money in forums and in my case the JD was less by about 1k if I remember correctly. If paying cash then I think Kubota was slightly cheaper, but who can pay cash for these things?! Everyone has a favorite and will defend JD or Kubota. I wanted the most for my money and I thought JD offered that even though I seen more issues with the JD in forums. They both seem to have their own issues, but I have always seen a little more on the JD side. Not sure if that is because JD owners are more likely to be on forums or there are more 1025r's out there or they simply do have more issues. Not sure. I was going to comment in the last video about using your feet but didn't......lol. I forgot about the neutral, I think I always help and go in reverse to help it or just let it slide forward. I'll have to try and remember to try neutral!
the yanmar sa324 is a little over 20k with backhoe. maybe you can enlighten me? its way bigger for less money. also didnt yanmar make deere and or the motors for many years?what am i missing? the sa324 will drag greene and orange down the road for way less frog skins. i looked at greene and orange but got a 2017 yanmar sa324 with backhoe for 10k. its still on tractorhouse.com for 12k they took 10k the only orange in my shop is KTM and STIHL . greene is for people w more cash than brains. a good number 2 choice is the kiote IMO PLEASE ENLIGHTEN ME TIM thanks for the great vid
