About Wazheng (挖筝): Wa Zheng means, the paulownia wood of the Guzheng is dug out instead of shaped, the process is tedious yet rewarding, it is an old traditional method of making Guzhengs. Dug out from a single piece of log for the top sound board and also the frame, this is known as the Zheng Wa Zheng (整挖筝) whereas, another type of Wazheng is called Ban Wa Zheng (半挖筝) which only features the top sound board being a single dug out piece of wood. The Zhuque brand only features the Zheng Wa Zheng, which typically costs 3 times more than Ban Wa Zheng to make.
About Kaoban Zheng (烤板筝): Kaoban means the sound board of the Guzheng is heat treated into the curved shape from a plank of paulownia wood. This method of making Guzheng is popular in from the late 20th century to current modern day due to the penetrative sound, clear highs and clean tones that the Guzhengs tend to sound. It excels in bringing out the emotions in music pieces and is also very good at showcasing the technical abilities of the player, which is why majority of competition competitors chooses to play the Dunhuang Kaoban Guzheng in large scale competitions.

Love you guys great work! As a zheng artist, I have a huge collection of zithers mainly custom made.
As for brands, for beginners it matters as long as the brand is reputable and the seller is honest.
Brands and price, materials, and decorations, I found are not as relevant. If everyone had the opportunity to sit with any instrument for any length of time to test out before purchasing, is a huge luxury. It's very risky to order an instrument without having a first hand trial before buying.
When you get to have that opportunity to play with it and hear it, feel it, experience the sound in a real space. Then you really know it's quality. But knowing how it was made initially makes a huge difference too in quality.
I've had bad experiences with very, very high quality brands and very high price tags. The sound quality wasn't exactly my taste. The base sound board cracked ! Even though I have all my instruments cared for immaculately in controlled storage environments.
Brands matter if Hoi have a huge budget and money is nothing to you. If you're starting off and have a lot of financial support, great. But if you're more interested on how a zheng can improve your life or if you're a serious musician, wanting to become a professional full time artist. Then you have to be there in person. It's an investment of time and money.
    Thank you ❤

We curate our brands carefully based on the sound and material.
Reputable doesn't necessarily means it will be good, however, many small Guzheng brands do not manufacture their own Guzheng (outsourced hence zero quality control), some to tend misprice their products, and some would skip essential steps of instrument making to cut costs, hence having reliability and tonal issues.

Do you have any recommendations for entry level guzheng? I’m trying to learn but I’m not sure what to buy. I don’t want something too expensive because I’m afraid I might lose interest but I also don’t want my instrument to shatter the moment I touch it

I've seen some guzheng called "Tang style Guzheng" and they have three frets at the head of the guzheng where the string are attached to instead of the distinct S-shape or the travel-size straight line shape. Does the Tang style set affect the sound in a good way? Is this style advisable for beginners?
