    • @mysticmusical
      @mysticmusical Před 2 lety +13

      @@tiihtu2507 I'd say learning from scratch and learning another instrument are difficult in different ways. Trying to relearn and overwrite your habits and muscle memory is harder imo. Knew a guy that switched to cello and it took him a couple of years to stop using his violin techniques completely. I also tried playing a bit for fun and it just felt so strange and foreign. It's hard to ignore how wrong it felt to me. When you first start learning, it feels awkward and clumsy but that goes away with practice. With trying another instrument, your body can (not everyone ofc) physically reject the playing style and methods, especially on a similar instrument. If I had to say, it's like trying to play with your less dominant hand. It's difficult.

    I thought those were kotos at first! Kotos are Japanese, but they are nearly identical. Apparently the only major difference is the string material, with the Guzheng using metal strings while the koto uses silk, or a certain kind of plastic strings. Almost everything else, from the string length to the tuning method is the same, and the playing method seem to be the same as well, to the point where a Koto player could easily play a Guzheng and vice versa. The information I did find on the koto did say that it originated in China, so it seems to me like the Koto was a decendent of the Guzheng.

      My understanding is that the guzheng was originally Chinese and the Vietnamese (dan tranh), Japanese (koto) and Korean (kayageum) ones are descendants of it.
      The tunings/scales are a bit different, and playing techniques are also different because of the different types of finger picks.
      As for tuning method, I've been told that you need trained masters to tune a koto because it's apparently complicated. Whereas with the guzheng and dan tranh you can do it yourself.

      The kanji (chinese character) of koto is literally 箏, which is pronounced "zheng" in mandarin chinese. "Gu" means ancient/old. So yeah, koto is a decendent of the Guzheng.

      Im a Guzheng player and no, koto is very different. While yes they are both zithers, koto has a completely different playing style, number of strings, and even the shape of the instrument is different. The most major thing is the Chinese music scale vs the Japanese music scale, which contain completely different notes. While yes, i would be able to pluck strings properly, even the finger picks are different in shape and i would still need a long time to learn, as it is intrinsically a different instrument altogether

    Even if they play this badly or wrong, it's nearly impossible for this instrument to sound bad. I'd also love to see you try to play the tin whistle or flute so you could practice breath control

      It is a stunning beautiful instrument, I have one and the sound is just fantastic (especially the reverb and resonance of it in real life which is hard to capture on video), but it probably helps it’s a pentatonic instrument so you can play basically any strings in any order and it’ll sound good.

    i've been playing guzheng for 7 years and it feels wonderful to have my instrument be recognised on this channel. and also recognise the music being played, finally.
