X was so dramatically better, yes better, than so many of their colleagues. With John and Billy slightly older and more accomplished, they had a degree of polish and musicality that kept it tighter. John has said that Billy would not let them indulge in too much of that "art house shit," and that sensibility served them well.

This is the single best American rock band of the past 40+ years. Great musicians, terrific songwriters, and even with the "punk" tag, and all that it implies (dark, angsty, angry, etc), they still maintained a sense of humor ("your phone's off the hook, but you're not"...sweet!). I've seen them many times over the years, all iterations (and the Knitters too, with guitarist Dave Alvin of the Blasters). They're getting old, and Zoom survived a bout of bladder cancer a few years back, so if you have a chance to see them live anytime soon, do yourself a favor and go. They can still rock the house!

She gave them their punk cred at the start. Without her, they were just another Ramones wanna-be boy band. With her, they got lyrics with a bite, and stage presence that worked for that crowd.

@@yournamehere6719Agree. Back in the day people used to claim that X would be really great if they just got rid of Exene; comparisons to Yoko Ono were common. But without Exene they would have been just another rockabilly band. Exene’s unique stage persona, voice, and brilliant lyrics raised them to another level. Saw them live at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo in 1984, I think it was…the “More Fun in the New World” tour. Still one of the best rock concerts of my life.
