That was a good tip about being able to adjust the orientation of the latch. Nice job Handyman.
I dig that you're doing more basic instruction and simpler projects lately.
Didn’t know you could flip the latch, can’t believe I didn’t know that! Will be doing that to my gate now! Thanks handyman!
I received the new hardware for our gate from Amazon and it didn’t come with instructions!!! Dude, I’m glad to have found your video!!! It has made it all so simple to do!! Thanks!!!!
Hey Handy man I have installed all the types of gate latches and you are right this is the best and the easiest and last long time as long as it is done right. I live in florida and many of the diy guys do them wrong and don't last long. After storms or hurricanes I do many of these. Good video very simple but goes a long way for the diy guy and handy man for sure. Thanks and till the next one !
Those socket adapters are the best thing ever. I've got a few of em around.
I literally just installed one of these on a new gate for a customer. These are the best by far.
I've been a sub for a while now. I was just finishing up a new fence/gate project. I ran into this exact latch problem. Thanks for the solution, dude you're the best!!!
Very Helpful Video! I bought an Everbilt Thumb Latch, but will return it and buy the one in your video. Looks much easier to install. Thanks!
Quick and informative as always!! 👍👍👍
Nice video… And yes those are great gate latches! Personally, I like to keep them upside down to help support the weight of the gate while it’s closed. I think it takes some of the work off of the hinges and helps to keep the gate from sagging. Nice job
Have this set up on my fence when I moved in. So nice and convient
Nice and quick! I imagine if the screws on the latch (on the gate) are stripped and you don't want to drill new, you could just drill straight through and use carriage bolts.
I’m tired of you making so much money on these simple fixes. 😂 Keep it up Handyman. Love your videos
I've watched 75% of all your videos and I really like how you gave "do it yourself" type of advice in this video. Some of your more complicated projects would of been nice to have that dummy proof kind of answer. Keep up the good work Handyman, hopefully Handy Andy didn't electrocute himself!
Just got one and thanks to your video and some nice tools with an impact gun and a few drills it took 5 minutes and works awesome! I used your link so you can get a cut, learning a lot as a home diy, self described hack.
Another solid video from the Handyman!
Wow, I really needed your video and you were spot on for my needs. An ENORMOUS thank you and well done…
Potting soil bags make good impact gun setter downers.
Dude, your videos are one of thee best. Your camera views cover every important angle pertaining to the job, your narration is clear and concise and overall you look like a good dude willing to help and share your knowledge.
May i suggest something? Use impact rated sockets when using sockets with an impact drive, the black ones. The regular chrome sockets are not rated for impact driver use and can shatter into flying tiny pieces if they give way. Sounds far fetched but I actually had one shatter while using it, I was grateful that the tiny pieces hit my chest and I was wearing a carhardt hoodie and a couple of the pieces grazed my head, had they hit my eye it probably would of done something pretty bad..
Anyhow, you have a new subscriber in me. Looking forward to learning from your videos!
Have gone to these a few years ago. Now with 100s installed, I buy them by the box. Some like to leave upside down to help if gate sags. It rides up into latch.
I love the return system at Home Depot!!! Just has a situation for a client ware he provided 3 closet hanger rods. Got two short, and 1 long, needed 1 short 2 long.
If my memory serves me correctly my old Dewalt Cordless Drill Driver set from some 15-20 years ago came with the socket wrench adapter.I am sure that I had an additional one that i used with my corded drill driver set. My dad was a shadetree mechanic and did all grade of repairs at our house so my intro to tools was at an early age.
Love the socket attachments have the short ones and the 6in ones from husky nice video
Nice flip flops Handyman!
You make it look so easy! Question - how can I make a simple lock for the inside of this exact gate and latch, to keep people from walking in thru my gate uninvited? Thank you!
Thank you for this!!! Much appreciation!!!
Love this video. You make things look so simple! What lock would you recommend?
Thank you for sharing very helpful
Ty for mentioning the thing about the pliers
Awesome! Thank you so much!!
Great job
Tysm for this valuable information! But , I have wire fence gate . Can I put this latch closer in my this gate ? And can be this locked? Thanks
Thanks for the info!
Nice video. Straight forward. Question: what latch works on a t post?
Good video, I installed two on my gate, one higher one lower, what can I use to connect them so only pulling once
I appreciate the smaller vids I know your busy on other things but I am beginning to miss Polly..
Thank you for sharing the video
thanks for the video. i just realized we just installed the latch upside down, although it works haha
He actually installed it upside down lol there's a hole supposed to be at the bottom for a lock not the top. And it's a no sag latch when installed the right way
Nice job I like it
Good job!
Thank you!
Thanks needed to know how to flip it around
Amen brother, I had to replace a latch with this one.
Very Nice video. I'm building my own fence with a 4' wide gate. But I wanted my gate to open INWARD, to the yard, since clearance is limited outside the opening. I bought this same gate latch, but I'm confused how to install it when the gate opens IN. Is it always common to have the gate open OUT, as in your video? I've never built a fence before, and I'm rather confused about the gate swing and how to install the latch and hinges.
I like to add some blocking for the gate to rest against so the bolt striker thing doesn’t have to absorb all of the impact of the gate closing.
Question. Why use manufactured deckboards when the substructure is still treated. Will it last longer with all the joints.
We have the same latch on our fence. Can you recommend a lock for this configuration? Its a pain to get a regular lock to fit.
I bought an adjust fence and it comes with a smaller gate latch I was thinking to get a larger one like your video
Funny how areas differ. I almost never see that type of fence around here (Philadelphia). When you do see them they are referred to as 'Stockade Fence'. Great vid, as always. What's the charge?
Trigger happy with that impact gun...
Thank you very showing me how you do that. You can open the gate on both sides. That was what I wanted. What was the name of that latch and was it at Lowe’s or Home Depot?
Does the latch go on the inside or outside?
I just lost the bolt that make the latch move up and down . May I just buy that specific bolt in any where?
Is there a handle you can put in the hole to make is easier to open ? I installed one on our condo's garbage dumpster and some of the people say when they open it it hurts their fingers ?
I just put on a new gate latch. I was looking for this kind of latch but couldn't find it
we get really strong winds will this latch keep the gate close
Is there any shield that can be put over the latch that’s on the door? Anyone with a socket wrench can just remove it to get inside
Thanks 😊
We have one of these. The most problematic part is the spring. It came loose a few times and needed to be rehooked. This last time, it "sprung" some direction, never to be found again. The latch still works (manually). I'm not in the position of trying to find an exact replacement spring . . .
Those are the ones I install too. The thing about these latches is that the gate has very little sag room over time. I always add a (gate) turnbuckle cable and teach the homeowner how to adjust it if the latch suddenly stops lining up. ( I hate "be backs" ) - Thanks for the video Handyman!
I’ve used the same ones, twice already
Hi I need this latch can you tell me what brand that was please and thank you
Sorry about the missing lag bolts.. I needed them for another project.
I know you just replace your old gate latch and used the existing holes on the post. Is there a rule of thumb on the maximum gate latch should be installed for a new install?
What can I find or use to lock it? We had some one to fix the fence and make us a new gate but u can’t lock it.
A wire and a round piece came with mine is that to lock it and how do you use it?
2:57 - Yup, need at least three arms and hands. I have that problem on just about every project that I attempt! I'd have been teased mercilessly in school if I had a spare arm, or two, but it sure would have paid off as a "handy" adult!
Handyman thanks for all video you do i been watching all of your videos and learn a lot thanks
I have question about tile backsplash
I know i can tile over drywall you said that on one of your videos but can you please tell me what materials i can use to tile backsplash and the drywall is painted already do i need to scrub the paint if i need so what i need to use to scrub the paint thanks😊
Just go right over the paint with your mastic or thinset.
@@TheHandyman1 thank you for replying you are the best 👌😊
Hello, whats the name of this latch? I'm from the UK and cant seem to find it here....
Can it be locked from the inside? And how? Thank you.
I prefer the latch upside down because it will help prevent sagging within time.. additionally I prefer Home Depot latch versus Lowes latch. The latch on your video is from Lowes.. however great video.
what about wooden gate that is on a cement block fense?
Holy crap! I did not know you could flip the latch! I installed my gate latch upside down. (Sigh)
Lol! Don't feel bad. Dumb me would have switched the hinges so the gate opens on the other side, thus doubling the work effort! 😂 (And it would probably still be wrong.)
Do you know how to repair a electric craftsman air blower bag it has a tear in the bag
What do you do when the lag bolt holes are loose/sloppy? Reposition the latch to another location?
Yes
So how much did you charge?
My dogs would push on the bottom where there is "give" and escape. How do you make a more secure closure that a dog could not squeeze out the bottom?
How do you lock from inside?
How much did you charge for this job?
You saved me! Just ordered one! Can you put a padlock on the inside of the gate latch?
The better brands will have holes for a padlock on both sides.
What you charge for this?
How to attach the wooden beam attached to the house to put the latch too
Does anyone know what that screw is called? I have the same exact type of latch on my gate, but the screw fell out and I can’t seem to find it anywhere.
Lag
Why u dont also install a spring for the gate?
What about the latch? Brand?
Something I have started doing is putting a dab of silicone on the end of the machine screw that holds both pieces together. Over time that little screw can back out and fall to the ground and it can't always be found. 😆
quick 150.00 or more handyman whats the charge
How much was that?
Where did you find that latch? I could find it anymore
Link is in the description.
Wassup!
Harbor Freight socket attachements
Every time the wind blows this same latch on my neighbor's fence gate swings open. I've seen it happen a few times & told them. But they insist it's prowlers opening the gate & sneaking around their yard; peeking through their windows. Thanks for this video, maybe I'll attempt to fix it for them. Their imagined tales of terror & refusal to believe me is just too weird to hear anymore.
Because it’s a privacy fence wouldn’t you want to have it where you can put a pad lock on the inside?
When you put the latch on in the first part of the video, you didn’t bother to hang the two tabs over the edge of the post and simply drove the tabs into the post then when you were replacing the room the door, the latch piece had been repositioned to the right place. Might want to do a little editing.
what's the reasoning behind putting the padlock side of the hasp on the outside?
You can put padlock both sides if the wood is not in the way or you cut out room for the lock. i like to give the client options. But this was a quick fix i guess.
One problem with changing to a pull down action, it that the dog will need only a few seconds to figuring out how to open the gate.
Are those holes for a padlock?
yes on the inside of the fence
“These are the tools I will use.” I didn’t see any pliers.🤓
Why have the latch that way? Wouldn't you want the lock hole on the inside?? Was hoping you would explain the proper way to install it and thought you were on the right track when you said you can flip the latch. Just don't understand why you would want the lock part on the other side of the fence. Especially with a privacy fence I'd understand with a 4 foot fence and it would not matter which way but how can one reach over a 5' or 6' fence to unlock the lock?
