Channel Tunnel

  • The Channel Tunnel opened in May 1994 after six years of construction and is the longest undersea tunnel in the world. It actually consists of three tunnels running parallel to each other; the two outer tunnels are used for trains and the smaller central service tunnel is used for ventilation and access.
    The two larger tunnels are 7.6m wide and are high enough to take a double-decker bus. They curve gently up and down or left and right so that they can run through the chalk strata. On average, the tunnels are 45m below the sea bed.
    The Channel Tunnel has cut travel times between the UK and mainland Europe dramatically. Before the tunnel, it took around 6-7 hours by rail and ferry from London to Paris. Trains can now do the same journey in 2.5 hours.

    Building a railroad/railway tunnel for high-speed train should not be made along a marathon runner (10-60 km), it must be at least minimum of 65 km and a maximum of 6,500 km according to the type and criteria of trains passing in the tunnel. And also the construction of a railroad/railway tunnel project must be within a minimum of 10 - 100 meters from underground, an underwater rail tunnel 10 - 200 meters below the deepest sea level (ocean) and the seabed 10 m - 500 m on the seabed, based on international railway project development regulations in 2010

    • @holger_p
      @holger_p Před 2 lety +1

      Why should a tunnel have a minimum length ? If you need a 100 Meter tunnel you build a 100 Meter tunnel. And tunnels are built in a concrete tube in open water today, it does not need to be below see ground. Just the ships above should not collide with the tunnel.

    • @madenaraputra6887
      @madenaraputra6887 Před 2 lety +1

      @@holger_p If on the land, building an underground tunnel is better because it is not in the sea, If at sea it must be built from the seabed, not from undersea water

    I can't find any information about the 200 meter curve drop between the tunnel ends, due to the earths curvature. How did they dial in the drilling machines to stay in line with the curve? If they did a level tunnel it would end up going towards the surface!

      They followed the root of the chalk, as she said, so it actually goes up and down, left and right, for the entire length. They followed the chalk line because it was easier to tunnel through.

      Respectfully, civil engineering isn't for everyone. Nor indeed is the path of design and creativity.
      Fortunately, we do have choices, even if we may struggle to respect those who help to make those possible.
