I got a job at a bike shop and have been building e-bikes for the past 2 weeks. My biggest advice is always double check. Always stop for a moment after identifying any issues. And do one thing at a time to narrow down the cause and appropriate fix. Going and changing a bunch of things at once makes it very difficult to find the root cause and the proper action, which will make your understanding better and ease of adjustment in the future.
It is applicable not only to bikes - it is a rule for any trouble shooting, for example in IT ))
Only 3 donuts were harmed in the making of this video.
Brilliant. Park Tool's benevolent cycle is the best kind of double entendre.
Happy Birthday 🎉. I never tire of watching you pair! Thank you for all the effort posting so many great videos!
Ok, so it's not visualising, but it is helpful for shifting. Detach the cable from the pinch bolt at the back, hold the cable, and feel how it's pulling your hand and releasing back when you actuate the shifter. Nice, smooth and strong? Then your cable housings are in good order and it should work with a good derailleur OK. It's just a useful way to reassure yourself that the shifting is working effectively.
Awesome Visualization. Top notch Calvin. Greetings from the birthplace of the Krispy Kreme!
Cream/pudding filled, blueberry cake, apple fritter
Thanks now I want a doughnut!
Glazed Old Fashioned, Blueberry, Apple Fritter (1 per year at most to avoid health complications!) in that order.
A straight chain (cassette to guide pulleys) is a happy chain.
Calvin, in reference specifically to the Shimano RD8000 derailleur, in your experience, when the derailleur cage pivot pin interface starts wobbling, is the wear happening on the cage pin itself, or the derailleur body tube, where the pin fits into?
Hello Bonjour Calvin , Très instructif , Merci ~ (cela fait plus de 10 ans que je ne mange pas de donuts 🍩) 😅
i am severely disappointed in this years lack of april fools content from Park Tool!!! The SA-K9 Professional Shop Dog Apron was a masterpiece!!!
Sorry to disappoint! We try not to force it - we only make a video if inspiration strikes.
711 fritter is the top option I can grab while on a test ride.
That reminds me that I should buy more of those. They need to be replaced when you change cables. I've gotten used to the ting, ting, ting, when going over rough roads.
Use cable sleeve instead, with enough inner exposed to work lube into the outer.
This channel is delicious!
As an IPMBA member... I approve of this message.....
Old fashioned for me!
Sound, sights, vibration, texture, measurement and sometimes color too are my tangible tell tale sign posts
What about taste?
fortunately bike n me don’t share the kitchen 😊 (foods too greasy)
Crullers…😂
hey , how to fix oil leaking from the piston a brake ? 🙀🙀
My favorite donuts are donuts I pickup by bicycle 🚲
Manage to _pull a Homer_ * with Doooonuuuuts !
* To succeed despite idiocy.
The Simpsons
Mmm 🍩
Fully sealed kit installed. I don't like sweets, or doughnuts.
mmmm ... donut
Before I watched it, I thought this must be an April fools video.
Nothing is helping me. In fact, I've been fighting with my shifting for a while now. Unfortunately, there isn't any bike repair shops near me. 🤨
Might be a bent derailleur hanger or even the rear mech itself.
Useful for visualising cable movement, but useless (after a few weeks) for their intended purpose i.e. stopping cable rub & rattle.
Dunkin’ Donuts top 3
- chocolate frosted raised
- vanilla cream filled (chocolate too)
- chocolate glazed cake
Most important benefit of bicycling, working off the weight, eating more donuts causes!
Good day.
I don't know how to contact you, that's why I'm writing here.
I'm from Ukraine.
I was looking for an answer to this question:
"Tell me about the Shimano "shifters".
I can't find what their "function" (technology) is called - when the left shifter (2; 3 speeds) has a "semi-reset" (from the large sprocket of the connecting rod system). That is, the front derailleur slightly shifts its foot (bracket) in the left direction, and does NOT switch!
This, as it were, was done so that in the case of "undesired" misalignment of the chain (a large sprocket of the cassette and, accordingly, a large one on the connecting rod system) there is no "slipping" of the chain on the derailleur bracket.
And for full switching, you need to press the lever twice (or twice or again).
Please tell me, I can't find any way to describe this characteristic for model search.
They say that it is only in the "group" of drivers, etc. but I came across a description of this function in the manual of the Shimano Deore XTR SL-M980 shifters, like MTB, and now I can't remember and even find what it's called, which "index" in the name of the models to search..."
And they helped me.
Shimano calls this "trimming" (trim function).
But I never found if there are versions of the XTR SL M-980 shifters with this function!
After all, I don't have it in the existing ones, and it is described in the manual for them.
I don't know what index is in the name.
Instructions - at home.
I myself serve in the war.
P.S. I apologize for Google Translate.
It sounds like you are describing a front derailleur that uses index shifting and a "trigger shift" selector on the handlebars.
"Indexed" refers to the fact that there are specific positions you click between when shifting (as opposed to when you just manually adjust the shifting until it stops grinding). To adjust, you have to set the high and low limits and then you adjust the "indexing" using the barrel to adjust cable position.
The "trigger shift" is when you go from indexed position to the next by pushing a lever that triggers a shift (I have these on my mountain bike).

I meant:
Can you tell me which shifters (for MTB bikes) have the "trimming" function?
And is this feature available in certain versions of "Shimano Deore XTR "SL-M980"?
